  • The town of Ramsey has a long and proud history. Parliament Street, the main retail area of the town, has seen many changes over even the past few years. This video has a few views from the late 1980's but concentr=trates on the few years leading up to 2014. This includes the dramatic regeneration scheme in the area of the Court House which led to Costa opening a coffee shop. The days of advocates and defendants appearing in court have long since ceased, so they wont be seen gathering for refreshments like they used to.

    What a sad, sad video.
I don't know if it was intended to show the decline and fall of the once beautiful jewel of the northern end of the Island, maybe it's just that "nostalgia ain't what it used to be", as they say.
My treasured recollections of the town date back to the 50's when we stayed at the Armadale on North Shore road, the currently blue building next to it was the oft frequented Lindale cafe for a warming drink on a blustery day. I recall Mooragh Park Regatta being a high point of entertainment, and in the 60's; With more money to spend, we graduated to a place on the Mooragh Prom, just round the corner "Park House" classy!
Coming of age brought new deligts, the Saddle (with that parrot!), the George in the square where Olwyn tickled the ivories, and the Mitre on Parliament Street.
Booking "Mystery Tours" with Crennels Coaches or Ramsicabs, walks to the Albert Tower, Glen Aulden, and Port-e-Vullen; the bus to Bride and the walk to the Point of Ayre, simple pleasures in an idyllic setting, gone for ever.

@@Manksview Thanks for responding, I wasn't decrying your work, far from it, I enjoyed the evocative memories, just not the inexorable march of time!
I've reached an age where the past holds much more for me than the future ever can!
I have a desire to re-visit the island again but fear it may crush the cherished memories I hold of the Ramsey I hold in my heart.
My last visit was in 1977 when I saw the remains of the beautiful Art Deco ballroom and outdoor pool which used to sit at the base of the northern stone jetty.
I learned to swim there, and always enjoyed a life saving hot coffee with my parents in the ballroom afterwards!
