Drawing a rectangle to the raw screen, without any windows, just setting pixels on the graphics driver, using windows API. We end up drawing a screen overlay crosshair.

I know this is just for fun, but it would be better to create a transparent borderless top level window instead. This will ensure your rectangle gets composited properly and doesn't flicker. Also, this will only work with other windowed applications. Games require more work if they are full screen, which I won't get into here.

yeah, that's clear (no pun intended). What makes it interesting to me is that you can break out of the windows concept and just set raw pixels

It's just WSL (Linux terminal in Windows), then I start tmux, create 3 panes, and then start vim in one of the panes!
Does that help for a start?
