Toyota Altezza Fan Car - Genting Hill Climb / 20 Yrs Old, but Still Strong and Fun/ YS Khong Driving

- I got this call from one of our fans, Syahmey, who asked me if I would like to drive his lovely Toyota Altezza, and I said I would love to. So that is how we ended up on our favorite mountain road a few days ago, and here is the video.
The Altezza is quite rare, but it is a great car, and also a bit under-rated - and so it is still one of the few cars you can get at relatively low prices, unlike the other popular JDMs that are sky-rocketing in price.
With a 6-speed manual (auto is also available), and a base of 200 horses, the Altezza was supposed to replace the AE86, but somehow it never quite took off - perhaps they should have continued using the name AE86, but then the engine moved to the 3S-GE, so the name plate could not be used. Perhaps they could have called it the SG86 or something like that, to continue the tradition. ABUDEN, the 86 was not so popular either, until the toufoo story, so this is all water under the bridge.

The BEAMS engine in all it's glory. I see these Altezzas all the while here, but, never get the chance to drive in one. So honestly, this is just a treat. The grunt, and YS's excellent footwork on the pedals, its just a real symphony. I am from Jamaica, but looking at the roads, I think we have such similar roads as well. Plenty of corners to contend with. Big up to this channel!!

These engines are built for the touge and also to keep running on forever. Excellent handling of the car YS, I noticed the owner of the car couldn’t hold back his wide smile because of that 😆 . Would be great to see you drive other classic jdm cars, which are still in good running condition of course 😂
Hi Jack, yes, the owner was very happy to have an idea of the potential of the car. We still had a bit in reserve, but in a couple of places we were able to unleash it. Thanks for supporting our channel.

This car are underrated legendary,3S-GTE engine Japan spec can capable output for 210PS for a 2 liter NA engine consider very powerful at that time.

My friend modded his tezza in the early 2000s. Had a bolt on turbo,, healthy 270bhp..very fun car. Dual vvti+turbo spooling sounds+external Wastegate=orgasm
Genuine question cause im buying one tommorow. If you know, was the engine itself stock? Bc i've heard it can be risky running a turbo on a high compression engine like the 3sge

Uncle what's going on with the steering at 16:58 look like u gonna almost miss catching it? was worried about the car reliability,guess syahmey not stingy on keeping the car at top condition,thanks syahmey for letting the legend having a go in it.Was laughing hard,my old waja was one of the wajalution and before that wiralution 🤣
I think there was a slight oversteer, and I caught it in time, so in the video you see the car as straight, but the tail came out a little bit. This was later on, as the tyres became a little hotter, so there was less grip at the back, and of course I was more used to the car and could start throwing it into the corner, and do a power over steer. Yes, Syahmey is a great guy who let me have full control over the car: I did leave a few hundred rpm as a safety margin.
Oversteer and uncle response is so quick. Im amazed in the car 💯

Hi, I am curious what screen you are using on the top of the center dash area?

After seeing uncle drive so many cars, somehow feel interested in Altezza. Wanted to know the maintenance cost, spare parts availability in market, petrol usage (Is Ron95 possible?) and other hidden costs beyond that before considering buying a 2nd hand Altezza!
My considerations are:
1) Petrol (Ron 95 can?) How far for full tank? How much for full tank.
2) Spare parts availability
3) Maintenance cost
4) Other hidden costs
5) Etc if u have experience any special occasions / breakdown?

We dont have any data. The stock engine can run RON95. No known problems.
I can tell you Syahmey is nervous because YS Khong is driving his Altezza.

Great run as always, I am curious about the length of the velocity stacks (trumpets). Are those 35mm IMEC trumpets? If so is the low to mid end torque still viable for low speed zones in some b-roads near batang kali?
Not too sure.
Yes 35mm IMEC trumpets. Actually i used custom intake plenum box togethet with this trumper but now plenum box was removed due to some minor fitting and adjustment
@@syahmeyramli Wow, i didn't really expect such a speedy reply from the owner himself...are there much of a difference from the low-end torque robbed without the sealed plenum on the factory cams? I reckon this short of a trumpet are usually paired with competition spec cams with high degrees. Thank you for your input btw.
@@user-fd4hf6ml5w low torqur better with plenum box. And of course need fine tuning
Space is tight with TBs, it was all packaged with the stock plenum in mind. I have got 100mm trumpets on mine but it has taken some work to get them to fit with a decent air filter

Cabin NVH is so noisy? Is it from the exhaust? Sounds like something is rattling. Suspension use poly bush is it?
This is a modified car that includes an intake and exhaust system, stiffer suspension, so what type of nvh do you expect?

I have a modified lexus is200 with a turboed 1gfe engine pushing close to 300 hp with full poly bushing, tein flex z coilovers and a catback exhaust and lower profile tyres and it sounds a lot more refined. Thats why i was wondering what’s all the clunking about.

Very short gear ratio. Seems like it is holding back the potentials of the engine/car.
Like Syahmey said, there isn't much power, so the short gears allow you to use the revs

@@YSKhongDriving partly yes.. maybe the tyres are worn out..it was little bit raining that day. its a highspeed corner , plus highway , near ipoh. hit puddle of water at corner at 80mph.. then immediately spin out of control and hit barrier left side of the road.. it was terrifying

Car not fast enough but it has it own beauty and fun. One for sure is... Body builds(internal /external) is much more solid than saga/iswara.
I bet you heard too much fudd lores from your peer group, the second traffic and other variables get in your way you can throw "fast" out of the window because it's only valid within a controlled environment.
Practicing on public road is already not desirable to be began with, even if one were forced to train this way out of financial constraints, reserving an error margin for other motorists out of mutual respect would be the bottomline, and this is why driver development and engagement matters more than one time statistics that inflate EGOs.
Leave the times for the curcuit where it matters, Big Balls wont win you any medals on the public roads, but you could certainly score yourself a Darwin Award out of overconfidence.
