Kia Pegas 1.4EX Test Review

  • Kia SA recently launched the Pegas on the market as a contender in the small, affordable sedan segment. Interestingly, many believe that this is a shrinking or dying segment yet the few remaining contenders all seem to achieve respectable sales every month.
The Pegas seems quite similar in many ways to the discontinued Rio sedan and Kia surprised me with the very aggressive pricing of this model. Uber drivers among others need to take note of this new model.
The Pegas is powered by a 1.4L 4 cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels through a 5 speed manual transmission. A 4 speed automatic option is also available. Figures of 69kW and 132Nm are respectable and the car is quite zippy on the road. Overtaking may require a downshift but it's no hardship.
Fuel economy will always be a major factor in this market segment and our overall figure of 5.8L/100km for mixed driving rates as excellent.
The Pegas offers excellent space both front and rear and adds a massive boot to the recipe. The upper spec EX model offers artificial leather upholstery, drivers armrest and alloy wheels to the base LX model that already offers infotainment touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, air-conditioning and 2 airbags.
The test car featured a speed limit warning that was a source of annoyance to me, chiming as the speed reached 120kph on the freeway. Hopefully this can be muted or disconnected in some way.
The overall driving experience is simple, easy and light but maybe a little sterile for an enthusiastic driver. Most buyers in this category would not be looking for any more.
The biggest plus of the Pegas is the exceptionally low selling price considering the size and features offered. The LX model is currently priced at R225 995 with the EX as tested at R236 995. This even includes a 4 year/ 60 000km service plan.

Looks very simple and that will set it out from it's rivals... Keen Uber applicant this one, but also a good family car too.
