Growing food with zero heating in Massachusetts' winter

  • Jonathan Bates is better known for the food forest him and his colleague Eric Toensmeier planted on their 1/10th of an acre urban lot in Holyoke, Massachusetts. When I visited him in February, most of the lot and its 200 plant species were still covered with snow, but Jonathan showed me around their eco-shelter. Thanks to good insulation and thermal mass, the passive greenhouse maintains above freezing temperatures all winter, and allows them to grow food throughout the year.

    Expecting to grow an avocado tree outside in Massachusetts due to global warming isn't likely. As one who studies climate change issues I expect that what we will see is the temperature/moisture fluctuations that we are presently observing will become more pronounced. This will stress all plants and in time most, if not all, food production will move indoors. Being able to maintain plant growth conditions will require heating and cooling capacities in greenhouses and other indoor growing spaces.
    Great video showing how individual's or small groups/families can feed themselves as the climate situation worsens. Hopefully many will follow your lead...

      OK, you are technically correct, as a sheet of plastic can be, lets say, R-0.15 But that R value can be so low you might as well consider it zero. For example, a pine plank has an R value of approximately 1 per inch of thickness. Our log cabin has walls that measure only R-7.

    My little garden is on a slight hill so my (outdoor) worm bin is in a large garbage can with screen on top. The bottom of the can is propped up a bit with rocks. The sides of the can are drilled and the tea that is created migrates down the slope and feeds all my garden. I am very happy to see more passive solar and geothermal greenhouses popping up behind houses as we all prepare for what may be severe climate changes.

I had one in the yard (NY) and it grew fine for two years until the year without snow and the ground froze and that was it. I saw a fig tree in NJ that was over 15 ft tall.

    What type of fish are you raising that can handle 29F air temp , at what summer air temp and what is the water temp at both seasons?

    • @kwodell8694
      @kwodell8694 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the air temp is of no importance to fish as long as the water doesn't freeze. water acts as a heat sink and it would take days of 29F to cool the water enough to hurt the fish.

    • @YouKnowItMang
      @YouKnowItMang 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly, fish live in water and don't breathe air. :)

    • @YouKnowItMang
      @YouKnowItMang 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Secondly, 29F air temp does not necessarily equal 29F water temp. Since there is a 30 degree differential (as stated) then the water could be between 29F and the max day time temp and probably more than 30 degrees in difference if the 29F was the seasonal low, this means the water could be consistently around 40-50F in the winter.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dig 8' deep trenches outside & bury as much 3" black plastic tubing in it as possible, then duct the relatively warm air (40-50F) into your greenhouse with a fan system.

    So I think I saw that you are using pine needles to keep the weeds down and possibly as eventual compost? Is that right? I’m thinking of doing the same. Just starting a raised bed garden inside my high tunnel greenhouse in North East Wyoming. I was going to grind them up in a mulcher, but I heard that they have properties that inhibit seed growth. However, I think that would be quite good for keeping weeds down after the plants have come up. I was just wondering about your thoughts on this? Do they help keep the soil warmer? I am also considering year round gardening. Thanks for your video!

      No. Figs are not citrus and he knows that. You misunderstood what he was saying. Chicago Hardy figs are called that because they are so hardy they can be grown in Chicago. I have one in my house here in East TN and it gave me figs last year. I bring it inside because of all the terrible winds we get where I am that would trash the tree. (E.g., last year we had just terrible straight-line winds that it snapped a 15-year-old red oak tree that was 18 feet high from the roots like you break a carrot.)
      I know of neighbors who have Chicago Hardy figs in their yards (they also have ornamental banana trees) and get figs from the fig tree.;

      That is the rental unit below a landlord's apartment, by taking out the insulation the renters crank up the heat which lowers the bills of the unit above. As a carpenter I have repaired plenty of 150 year old houses where the stud bays were filled with bricks. It is generally accepted (by builders)that it was much warmer in Vermont in the 1760 to 1860 time frame and the bricks cooled and dehumidifier while keeping stray bullets out.

Also in addition to the passive heating of the water tanks additional solar exposure heat could be transfered into the tanks with a water to water heat tranfer setup. Sort of a concentration of solar enegy.

    We've been growing avocados and citrus in greenhouses in Alaska, Canada and Northern Europe for about 40 years now. Its not because of global warming, its because of greenhouse technology, affordability and acceptability. Not to mention hybridization of many fruits/ trees has led to cold hardy varieties. Don't make broad, far reaching climate declarations if you're not willing to discuss all the millions of variables.

    I don't think there is much (intelligent) debate that global warming is happening. The only real question is to what extent man is contributing, and to what extent it is a natural cycle.

      ... some are "food grade", meaning they've been used to transport syrups or other edible liquids, but some are "agricultural grade", meaning they've held chemicals, sometimes pesticides or herbicides. Unless you're going to use them only for heat storage by painting them black to absorb sun energy, be careful about using the water for fish or in garden beds.

    The winter after you open this bio shelter up that avocado tree is toast, global warming or not.

    I give you credit for building the structure and incorporating Aquaponics. I think you mis-spoke when you said global warming… I think you meant to say Geo engineering...Opening the bio shelter to the chemical fall out from climate engineering i.e. aluminum barium and strontium, is definitely a bad idea

    The aimals and brids should be inside the greenhouse so that their body heat and wastes can be used as direct sources of heat and fertilizer and produce carbon dioxide for the plants to breath in and exhale oxygen for the animals and birds.

    How much does it cost to feed the fish? Is that part of your calculations on how much it costs to use that method over growing in soil? Are you eating the fish? Talapia or bluegills?

    • @happybuddyperson
      @happybuddyperson 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      some fish will eat algae which is free, some will eat the mosquitos or other larvae in the water, you can set it up so that the fish food is free, and the fish waste feeds the plants.

    • @RWilliKiwi

      Tilapia are one of the most efficient converters of food to body weight and the food can be grain or vegetable matter unlike farmed salmon or other farmed fish that require ground fish meal.

      ***** There is an article (I think from an old "Organic Gardening" magazine) that's been posted online about a guy who raises worms not only for composting, but to feed his catfish. I've never seen an update to see if it's fully sustainable or if it's worked out in the long run, but it's an interesting idea. Fish waste feeding the garden, veggie scraps feeding worms, worms feeding the fish.

    Adapting SOUTHERN grow zone plants isn't that hard to accomplish. It does take several generations of careful adaptation. We grow Georgia Vidalia Onions here in Lubec, Maine Bigger than their best crop in Georgia which is zone 9A. We are 4.
