How time passes! I first saw this film in 1970 on July 4th when it played at a neighborhood theatre. About two years later it appeared on TV, CBS late night movie in early 1972, heavily censored. The fundamentalists of the day had a hissy-fit, or so I'd heard. Decades later, I bought the DVD. This had always been one of my film favorites. Sad to think that of the principals in this movie, only four are still alive: Helmut Berger (Martin von Essenbeck), Renaud Verley (Gunther von Essenbeck), Charlotte Rampling (Elisabeth Thalmann), and Umberto Orsino (Herbert Thalmann). All the others (Rest in Peace) are gone: Dirk Bogarde (Friedrich Brückmann), Helmut Griem (Wolfe Aschenbach), Rene Koldehoff (Konstantin von Essenbeck), Ingrid Thulin (Sophie von Essenbeck), Albrecht Schönhals (Baron Joachim von Essenbeck), and Nora Ricci (Governess).
I am delighted to have discovered this gem of a movie. Thanks to TH-cam. I was three years old in 1969 and this movie was not shown in my country at the time nor anywhere else I lived.
Berger was fearless and that's what made this performance so stunning
the character of Martin, Helmut Berger, is one of the most twisted, amoral personalities ever portrayed on film.Berger is perfect.
Agree…
Algemeine SS member Berger.
RIP dear Helmut(18.05.23)
Apprently Marlene Dietrich sent to Helmut a note while he was in NY on a photo of her as the Blue Angel saying " well, who did it better?"
actually, she wrote "who's prettier?"
He was the SS officer in this flick. He played it also in "Salon kitty" and Codename Emrald.
Für mich die beste Szene im Film, hab einfach einen Ohrwurm davon.
He's completely crazy! I love him!
RIP Helmut Berger.
