    i think this was my favourite quest because it was so unique. most of the quests have you fighting for survival and while this quest DOES have fighting in it, most of it is a formal party. your main goal is to make sure the guests like you. it's so mysterious. instead of exploring the wilderness, you're exploring someone's castle while it's full to the brim with rich orlesians, which somehow feels even more dangerous.

    People who don't appreciate this quest have no idea how to navigate themselves among higher classes. You're an Inquisitor, about to influence nobles on the brink of civil war, _whilst_ trying to stop an assassin from plunging an empire into chaos and unrest. Preventing a future in which darkspawn roamed free and the Deep Roads were opened.
    I mean, the least you could do is play the Game and not act like a warmongering lunatic who would spread things out without a shred of evidence.

      All orlesian nobles deserve to be put to the sword, but then again, so do most of the humans of Orleais and Tevinter.
      Infact humanity deserve a culling in Dragon age, i would say that 90% of the humans of Tevinter and Orlais need to be wiped out, because Orlais and Tevinter have proved to be imperialist racist and classist shitholes with no redeeming qualities.
      Tevinter should be ceded to the Qunari, while Orlais should be split between a reborn kingdom of the Dales and Nevarra.
      Let the human be punished for their imperialism and crimes.
      The extermination of most Tevinter and Orlesian humans should a warning to the other human nation to change course and stop oppressing minorities.

    What I love about this mission is sometimes the ‘political’/‘diplomatic’ missions in games can be boring and not well done, but this is my favourite mission in Inquisition (maybe even the entire series) because it really captures the idea of “The Game” in Orlais. You do feel out of your depth, and weirdly you feel just as in danger here as when you’re out exploring and fighting demons.

    One could only imagine the atmosphere at the winter palace, the music is so very, enchanting. As if all the nobles in the palace are under a hex, just as much as they are enchanted by the lust of power the empress emits. For a nation to contain it's evil is a true mark of civilisation

    This soundtrack combined with intrigue on dance floor, court approval, secrets to discover and gather, chatting up people and inquisition teammates, sneaking to closed parts of the palace.
    It gives me feeling of "there's family gathering in the living room and you sneak to the second floor" kinda of vibe and I don't know why but I love it!

  • @pondrthis1
    @pondrthis1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +138

    People that hate the Grand Game don't understand anything about society, period. It's a far more respectable and socially responsible behavior than any other political system in fiction or reality. The Game makes Orlais a sort of mental meritocracy that costs nothing to the people of the Empire. After all, there are no political fundraisers wasting the people's money, and proper play of the Game requires at most martial deterrence: outright war is a serious faux pas that effectively admits defeat at the maneuverings of the Game.
    When someone wins at the Game, they're the most fit to lead. It shows they can win hearts and lands with words and quiet designs, rather than costly wars or one-sided treaties. People that can't see past Orlais' pettiness or apparent oligarchical nature are missing the skew the Game itself applies to the Orlesian imperial court.

    • @ludicrus32
      @ludicrus32 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +pondrthis1 Yeah, well, back in reality, do you want to see where the Grand Game leads? July 14th, 1789, the fall of the Bastille. If you're a monarchist, more power to you, a few nations make it work, like the UK, Morocco, or Saudi Arabia. But a bloated, over-funded aristocracy that does nothing but spend more and more of the state's money to fund their petty little revenge schemes and squabble over increasingly ridiculous titles in the Court while they drift further and further away from 90% of the country is not a viable political system. Further more, do you want to know what the Grand Game does in Orlais? It results in thousands of innocent elves dead, because Celene and Gaspard wanted to play the game.

    • @pondrthis1
      @pondrthis1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Monarchy and the "bloated aristocracy" of 18th c. France had a very different set of issues than Orlais. France had overseas colonies funding the aristocracy to entirely new heights and no financial sink of a foreign (or domestic) war. Furthermore, your claim that Orlais is spending state money on petty little revenge schemes is unfounded--outside of a few hired goons, we don't see the Empress, the only one with access to true state money, spending tons of money on the Game specifically. Spending private funds on revenge schemes or even war itself is actually an economic stimulus, as the common folk are the blacksmiths and ranchers and farmers that fuel the army.
      There's also the fact that French "monarchs" claimed divine right and declared their opponents heretics, effectively forcing the people to go along with the madness until they reached a boiling point. Opposition in the Grand Game is considered part of the leadership position, and is expected if not encouraged.
      If you have a problem with poorly distributed wealth, direct your complaints appropriately. I never supported unequal distribution of wealth. I supported the Game, which is patently a better pastime for the powerful than sipping tea. Teatime doesn't cull the ignorant or weak from the leadership flock.

    • @Pheonixfirestar
      @Pheonixfirestar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well then I guess Varric Cassandra Sera blackwall most of Fereldon and myself(inquisitor)don't know society very well then.....(even though we live and suffer in the hands of politics all the time and have to deal with their BS but whatever what do we every day people know?) Edit: I also forgot to mention the suffering on what the elves had gone through in Orlais because of the Grand game. Still what do we know right? *sarcasm*

    • @pondrthis1
      @pondrthis1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Phoenixfireheart Blackwall and Sera are criminals that would be punished under any political scheme. Varric isn't Orlesian and is best known for aiding and abetting a famous terrorist in the Free Marches--so not the best argument. Cassandra was a powerful Orlesian goon, so if anything, she prospered under the Orlesian system.
      As you don't live in a fictional world, I'm going to disregard your comment about yourself.
      If you took the time to read my comment, I wasn't praising the unequal distribution of wealth. I was praising the filter that bitter rivalry and an abject disregard for historical tradition put on an oligarchy. In the US, you can't negate the power of the Gates or Koch families with one debilitating scandal. In renaissance France, you couldn't take down the king with one, either--they ruled by divine right.
      In Orlais, being in power means being on the chopping block, and that's far superior to real-world systems in which power solidifies and begets more power.

    • @Pheonixfirestar
      @Pheonixfirestar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      pondrthis1 ok first off I AM the inquisitor so technically yes I am part of that world the game experience of that world, second the only reason why sera was like a criminal because of how nobles are and how society treated other people, and most nobles are basically criminals with power so no difference actually, which is why at first Blackwall didn't care who he was working for everyone was an arse so was he and in the end a family and his men including himself payed for it, after all nobody gonna question who sent him in the first place.. ruin the game you see? and finally most important Cassandra is NOBODY GOON and her life was not great and she is a example of how a noble SHOULD act. And you don't have to live in Orlais to be a part of there awful game, anyone can be the victor or the victim. Plus you said on quote ("People that hate the Grand Game don't understand anything about society, period". It's a far more respectable and socially responsible behavior than any other political system in fiction or reality.") So yeah you talking about people in general as well. And you weren't being specific on the orleasons aspect either.

      Um, she was horrible to Briala and treated her like a pet rather than a partner. Their relationship was VERY toxic. I'm not saying I have a bad opinion of her, BUT to say that she's perfect or a good person is highly debatable.

    • @SinnSly
      @SinnSly 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not saying she is perfect but Celene never treated Bria like a pet, if you actually read the book you'll see that she treats Briala with nothing but respect and love, yes she has made mistakes and fucked up along the way but Briala is her closest friend and lover, who actually was the one controlling things and influencing Celene to help the Elves more than she should of, which Celene actually acknowledges.
      Look, Celene is far from perfect but she si the best hope Orlais has to finally have peace with Fereldan and to finally prosper on anything other than war, which is was Gaspard wants, nothing but war when Orlais needs change, which Celene brings.

      ***** If by Game of Throne you mean political intrigue mixed with lots and lots of murder, then yes. Wait, what am I saying? That IS what Game of Thrones is!
      Also, while I enjoyed the quest immensely, I can see how it could be annoying to some. This quest is Orlais distilled down to its essence and topped with fancy, impractical clothing and stinky cheeses. Also, people hate timed events, and the exploration outside of the party was a bit of one. You can't really take that much time to explore when you've got a clock ticking down like that. I think it was a well done piece and the villain at the end was a very well done twist which made sense, and was very cleverly foreshadowed throughout in both dialogue, animations on the faces, and even some of the enemies.

    • @anthonymurano4775

      Okay, unless you're examining every piece of grass, there's NO WAY possible you can run so low on approval that you end up getting a game over. This quest is an absolute BITCH the first time. Then it's pretty easy.
    But I have HORRIBLE memories with this one because my game glitched and the Harlequin never appeared. I didn't know the file was glitched and I saved in an area that was too far out to go back before the timer ended. Mainly because I kept getting lost and couldn't make my way through the whole place. Endless loop of game over due to counter hitting 0. Over and over and over...
    I had to resort to a save from waaaaaaaaay back before the Templar/Mage quest. I may as well have just made a new damn file, it was that far back. I dread doing this quest for this very reason. I hold it off for as long as possible. I completed it on my other file the other day ending at level 21 because I stalled so much.
    Plus, Orlesians are nothing but snobby, rich assholes and I want to punch them all in the face. But I can't punch them in the face because of their metal masks. I'd hurt my hand. It's like _they know._

      musthaveenergy I nearly shat myself when I saw the "Court Approval"
      Like, they're gonna kick me out if they don't like me?! Excuse me, but I have a giant axe that has cleaved through 10 different dragon skulls!

      musthaveenergy And then, for whatever reason, my completely private conversation with Florianne on the dance floor drops my approval by like 40. What the hell, Orlais.

    This sounds exactly like the HALO: ODST Menu Soundtrack. The start is the exact same, and the rest is extremely similar.

    1:05 sounds really similar to the intro of Billie Eilish's No Time to Die.

    Hated the "eavesdropping" thing uggghhh. Getting to know the characters better was fun but the quest sucks.

      Lol it reminded of those stupid quests in Assassin's Creed where you have to tail a target and eavesdrop without getting noticed.
