CONION C126-F Ghettoblaster Bluetooth Mod

  • This is an old school boombox CONION C-126F from 80's. It has 2 cassette decks and FM/AM radio. The upper cassette deck (deck B) is like a car cassette player set in the center of the box. The 4 way speakers are not separated from the main console that makes this a one-box gigantic ghetto-blaster.
The radio worked fine, and both cassette played well. However, the sound of the cassette especially lower one (deck A) wasn't good. Also the LED tape run indicators did not work at all.
Here is what I did for tuning-up this boombox.
    1) Took it apart and clean all parts
    2) Treated all controllers with contact cleaner
    3) Cleaned and de-magnetized play + record head of the both cassette decks.
    4) Replaced all drive belts on the deck B, that include tape counter and tape run indicator LEDs.
    5) Adjust the tape speed of the deck B.
    6) Add Bluetooth receiver along with groundloop noise eliminator.
    7) Add rainbow color LEDs.
About the deck B, the drive belt was still OK, and playing speed was a little bit faster than it's supposed to be. However, there was no speed adjustment screw on the back side of the motor, so I left as it was. With this age and condition, a little faster speed is not a problem than slower speed, that's what I thought.
The Bluetooth signal was accessed to the deck B signal input. The power for the Bluetooth and LED was also taken from Deck B.
After closing the back case, I found another problem during the testing, so I reopen the body and removed particular parts for readjustment again and again. Finally, it became perfect working condition.
By the way, this boombox has an alarm system. It was funny the alarm went off and my dog Lucky reacted it from upstairs far away. Indeed the alarm was lauded enough protecting itself.
    Enjoy!!
    ---------------------
Special thanks to the Boombox Collector Pedro.
This boombox was presented to Pedro from his wife as a gift. Wow!

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I really hope in my Aiwa 990 the problem is only about belts, and, for me , this would be a great work to do. To understand where the belts turn, what is their path through the mechanism... You are increasing in me the will of opening my tpr and look inside...
And to see what I find there. Thank you again. You’re very strong man. Ciao Teddy.

Replacing the drive belt and cleanup inside will be solve the cassette deck problem. The sound problem, you want to clean the controller with contact cleaner. Most of the "no sound" problem will be gone.

Hi Teddy, amazing work, looks like brand new. One thing I don't understand is using the tape input to add the bluetooth, pretty noisy channel (and biased?), why not hack the tuner input instead (or when there is an aux input use this instead)? You also using a ground loop isolator (coils) that reduces the quality of the signal, why not using a bluetooth cassette (very cheap to make yourself) with almost same result. You can add powerlines to the top of the cassette (no batteries required) to get the old scool feeling of pressing "play". A blue cassette with extra features ;-)
Another better approach is to use an isolated DC/DC converter (to avoid a ground-loop) for the bluetooth module so you don't have to (again) downgrade quality by using a coil isolation solution. Can remember I notice this before at some other videos. Used this at few projects and it is awesome, no noise at all. I use a few caps at the output, 470uf, 0.22uf and 0,01uf.
    Happy customizing!

If you do not remove the ground loop problem, then you will have a noise whenever you play the Bluetooth. There are two way to remove the ground loop problem. Ground loop eliminator or DC isolator. Check my most recent videos, I do not use ground loop isolator any more but using DC isolator.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Fransico. Conion is from ONKYO as you said.
"Conion, also known as Coney Onkyo, was a boombox manufacturer during the 1980's. They operated in Kobe, Japan. Although they didn't make very many models, some of them rank among the largest and most popular boomboxes ever built. It's hard to ignore the imposing size, flashy looks and massive sound produced by their very popular C-100."
The Sanyo was sold right away, and I will sell more boomboxes so sometimes check my ebay listing! Thanks for the comment.

I have been doing restoration on the old school boomboxes, and other vintage items. I only work with the "Radio working condition " boomboxes. If it has no power, nor no radio is working at all, I do not take it for my work. If you need more detail, contact me at teddy.hashee@gmail.com for detail. Thank you for the comment.

Hi Teddy, please...very please..🙏 can you explain me, exatly how to install bluetooth receiver system and Led? please I need to do this too. You're always the best and I thank you very much

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Adding Bluetooth in the boombox, you need to think about 3 things.
      1) Where you want to put Bluetooth signal into the system.
      2) Where do you want to bring the power to the Bluetooth module.
      3) And finally, how do you eliminate the ground loop noise.
If you cover these 3 things, your DIY project will go well.
If your model does have a AUX or LINE IN, you can put BT signal from there.
If your model does not have a AUX or LINE IN, you need to find out where you want to inject Bluetooth music signal in.
I use radio signal input, volume potentiometer, etc.., but you can find another place.
If you use volume controller, when you play the bluetooth, the meter will not work.
So if you want meter to work with music, you need to find the input place before the volume controller.
Probably selection switch that will set the radio for FM, AM, SW1 and SW2, you can check this place for the possibility of the input.
Or before that selection switch, etc..
The power, you can bring from the poser sauce.
Or other place such as Power for the radio, power for the cassette deck, etc..
Most of the power of the large boombox is more than 12V, so
I used car usb charger(12V to 24V) with USB, Just connect power to them then they will reduce the voltage to 5V.
So I can use usb type bluetooth module.
you can also use stepdown module to reduce the power to 5v.
And eliminate the groundloop noise, you have 2 option.
Use the DC-DC isolation module, or groundloop noise elimination module such as MPOW.
Here is a parts list for you.
Bluetooth 2.0 to 4.0 which ever you want to use.
      I like this one.
      amzn.to/2QNAkq9
If you use over 4.0 to the small boombox, you need to add resistor between BT signal (L and R) and input point.
50K will work for the small boombox, from my experience.
      USB car charger
      amzn.to/2Nx9Qv0
This one handle from 12V to 24V and reduce it to 5V
      or use stepdown module
      Back converter stepdown module
      amzn.to/2xvTuIP
or this one is linear type
      amzn.to/2NASy08
google by yourself what is the difference between both above stepdown module
      Toggle switch 6 pins
      amzn.to/2OHl1O4
If you want to add LEDs along with Bluetooth, buy some LEDs and resistor and use usb cable to connect it to the car charger.
When you turn on the power, both bluetooth and leds will be on.
Probably when you read my email, still you need to research more information by yourself.
But it will be a fun for you to figure out what to do in order to make your mod success.
I was asked many viewer how to install bluetooth and led to the boombox.
I may make some video for that.
      Teddy

Good morning Teddy, once more I need your help, if you agree.... what liquid, cream, oil, you use to clean, oil, the mechanism from dust, rust, dirtying in a radio like mine stopped from many years? I’m not so sure I will find good plastic, hardened by the years, and so on... But as you said before, I have to go into it and see what I can work with.... Have a nice day. Regards. Piero

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

On the outer casing body or plastic, wash them with water and mild detergent. Then use plastic cleaner, goo-gone, and other type of mild cleaner on its face.
I use plastic cleaner from Japan.
      www.soft99.co.jp/english/products/carcare/body_cleaner/plastic_cleaner.html?pid=09066
Also you can use car wax to clean and polish the body.
For the clean plastic such as lens for the radio dial, if the deep scratches there, you want to check my videos how I removed them by water sanding, and polish with plastic cleaner. Any type of the combination work is needed in order to make it clear like a new.
For the mechanism, vacuum dust first, then clean detail with over 70% rubbing alcohol, if the grease is really hard to remove, then liquid wrench is good choice. But for the cassette deck, probably you can clean with only rubbing alcohol.
      Oil and lubrication,
      100% synthetic oil
      amzn.to/2M7pyaz
and any type of lithium grease
      amzn.to/2oL03CK
      for the chrome
      www.soft99.co.jp/english/products/carcare/body_cleaner/chrome_cleaner.html?pid=09033
      ----------------------
Now you may not find same products over there, but it is not a problem.
Any type of the cleaner can do the same job.
When you start working the restoration, you will encounter the many problems and it will discourage you. Then take a time, leave from boombox for a while, search online, google many things and think about the solution. ONLY YOU can find the solution but not others.

@@teddyhashee Interesting, I bought one off EBay, then bought another as spares, once I have finished swapping bits, (If successful) the left over parts will be:
      Good pair of speakers,
radio/amp section that lights up, appears to tune but there is no sound output,
Cassette section has fully functioning auto-reverse deck, sounds great, as often happens with these, the LCD has failed, my other deck has a good display, works perfectly as well, but will not record, I think I am going to swap LCDs to give me a fully functional deck with the other one as a playback only deck.
Should I keep the spare parts? or do you think you could bring them back to life? I don't think there are any major faults, no burning, no exploded electrolytics that I can see, probably a stuck switch on the record circuit and something dead in the power amp. The worst bit is the LCD failure, which is cosmetic until someone wants to record. Oh, and there is no handle for it (The carrying handle that clips to the top.
