Fantastic images bringing back some great memories, especially at 5:12 'John Robertson' Fishing Tackle. I remember every Saturday morning a 50 yard line of men waiting for the shop to open so they could buy their fishing bait for the weekend. Also had the privilege to work there for a short time before I started my engineering apprenticeship. Thanks for the memories.

Aye , I vaguely " must've been two or three,ish " remember me mam taking down town to the handy arcacde and it being closed with those steel shutter gates , must of been early closing Wednesday . But the towns lost a lot of its character , but that's progress for you .
Spent Every Saturday in The Handyside from about 1970 until it closed. Brilliant times hanging out in The Card Bar, Fynd, Ultima Thule and all the other Hippy shops. Lots of happy memories with no punch ups or bother, so glad I was around then.
wow, so many good memories from the 80s... us rockers used to hang out in the Handiside Arcade and when we were old enough visit the Farmers Rest. Happy days.
It’s so sad. There must be no other city in England which has had ‘town planners’ destroy its very heritage as much as Newcastle since the 1960’s. And the people of Newcastle love their city so much. It’s a travesty.
What I remember most about Percy Street were the good pubs - The Haymarket Tavern, Hotspur Hotel, Percy Arms and the Farmer's. Used to tank up there on the way to The Mayfair. Was there not a ginger beer brewery attached to and/or behind the Farmer's or am I imagining that? Most of it had already been destroyed by the bus station/Eldon Square by the time I was there, sadly. Oh, and the Handyside Arcade which, when I was there, only had a poster shop in it and a couple of desultory clothes shops. Demolishing that place was an act of pure vandalism.
The ginger brewery was attached to the side of the Farmer’s Mr Wibble, the street had character back then, sadly today it’s only a route to somewhere else.
Before they pulled it down there was a pork butcher on percy st that sold plate ham and egg pies which were just bloody lovely had one for my dinner every day I was at college in bath lane
Handyside arcade conveniently caught fire. Retro shops before they were retro shops. Three Bulls Head had a really uneven floor and served drain cleaner Bass. The Haymarket was and still is my favourite pub of all time.
It all looks pretty run down, not sure we should grieve for too many of these buildings to be honest. A few of the best ones have been saved, inclduing most of those at the Haymarket end. Nice that The Crow's Nest pub lives on today!

Truly fantastic images, so many changes over the years, not quite the same ambience as before with all the changes going on, I miss the old Newcastle

Believe me Newcastle looks like Florence compared to what they did to Birmingham. I think Newcastle centre is very beautiful.

Kevin Jones your so right, now it’s just a street to somewhere else.
I was once chased down that street, not for far by harry enfields playboys, ahh great days.platform shoes were not designed for pursuit.
