  • SCOTTISH REACTION TO AMERICAN FOOTBALL 🏈
    Shaun in NYC Day 04 - So I'm in New York City. In this episode of the vlog, we go to the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to watch an NFL game between New York Giants and Detroit Lions. As Scottish person, this is a brand new experience. Football to us is something different - the ‪@NFL‬ is American Football.
    We are staying in a New York AirBnB in Brooklyn, and are looking forward to exploring the great city of New York (and of course Brooklyn) over the next couple of weeks. So excited to be in the big apple! All recommendations welcome!

    WELCOME TO SHAUNVLOG - I'm Shaun Alexander and this is my TH-cam vlog channel about my life and adventures. I'm from Edinburgh in Scotland, one of only a handful of Scottish TH-camrs / vloggers, and vlog about my daily life in Scotland and other countries I live at times, Scottish culture, life, the world, travel, culture and everything in between.
    I just love to tell stories and have been lucky enough to make this passion a job, having worked as a writer/journalist, photographer and corporate content executive during my career. We are privileged to live in an era where we can tell our stories directly to an audience using new media. Storytelling on social media is my passion and it is also my new career (I’m also an entrepreneur in the space), so put everything into providing the best content I can here on my TH-cam channel, over on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Shaun, your next football game MUST be a college game. College teams have a more intensely loyal fan base, & they're all-around more exciting. Other commentors mentioned the University of Alabama (oh yeah, baby) & Michigan. Darn good suggestions!
      As for the tailgaters, just like everybody has said so far, you'd be welcomed right in. If it's at a college game, -hahaha - I guarantee that Mom, Granny, Dad & Pops wouldnt take no for an answer. A beer would be in one hand & a fried chicken leg in the orher.

      What all of these others have said about going to tailgate parties the next time you come to the States. Lord knows if you make it to Texas will find some way to get you to a Collegiate football game where there's a good tailgate party going on even if it's going up to the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton and hanging out with my daughter and all of her in-laws. Not only do they have the game, they usually have two 10ftx10ft pop up tents with two or three television sets going to watch additional college games ,in addition to two or three BBQ Pits going with food. And that's before you get into the stadium! And if we get you here on a Friday night ,we'll take you to a Texas high school boys football game that will be just like that television show, Friday Night Lights. That's as close to reality TV as what you're going to get for Texas during the fall!

      @Marco-fi6gv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So true. If you give something a chance, you will be pleasantly surprised much of the time and at the very least you will be enlightened. Football is definitely my favorite sport, although right now college football is my absolute favorite. If you want to see some real team spirit, go to a college football game. I am still in NFL fan, but not quite as much as I used to be. If you go to a college game, every game is like a playoff atmosphere. Everyone is into the game and it's just an exciting atmosphere. NFL games, are only like that when there is a big game or a playoff situation. I know I am generalizing, but I have found that to be true pretty much wherever I go. I do like soccer as well, although I don't watch it that much. You should become a Washington Redskins fan, we will adopt you. Our boys just won the Stanley Cup in hockey too, go Caps!

    • @craigbrown1760
      @craigbrown1760 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marco, that's because in College football, the regular season is more or less a playoff since the NCAA is still resistant to the idea of an actual playoff system. What exists now is still little more than a popularity contest ending with 4 teams playing for a trophy. Every game matters.

    • @Marco-fi6gv
      @Marco-fi6gv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Craig Brown it's much more than that. Even if the game isn't that important, it's still more exciting than an NFL game. The players and the fans are actually into the game. I've been to several NFL games, at different stadiums and in general the crowds aren't into the games as much as they are in a college stadium. There are a lot of people at the NFL games that are there to justsocialize and they are barely paying attention to the game, certainly not every play. Consequently, they're not cheering a lot or as vocal when it comes to the other team. Just the opposite at most college games I've attended. The crowds are really into the game and they are vocal, for their team and against others. It's in the air and you can feel the energy in the air around you and it feeds on itself. They're not watching the game thinking , I hope they win because I want them to go to national championship, they're into it because they are fans of their team and of the game - it's as simple that. I just love the game, I could watch it on TV all day Saturday, different teams. Lots of good rivalries and overall better quality teams and competition. I'll agree that later in the season, the bowl game factor does contribute to this a great deal as well. I also agree with you about the popularity contest comment, although that is a bit oversimplified. They do need a true playoff system and if they had one it would not diminish they fan loyalty and enthusiasm one bit. As a matter of fact, it might boost it more.

      mike walter the NFL is insanely harder than college football. These are some of the most fit human beings on the planet, whose actions, reactions, and success on the field often come down to fractions of a second. Then they have to spend all their free time studying and memorizing the game, all while maintaining incredible amounts of athleticism. You cannot just rely on physical ability, like in college. If you don’t bring 110% effort to not only every game, but the week in between and the offseason, your career will end in the blink of an eye.
      To quote Ryan Riddle, who failed in the NFL: “But when training camp started and we suited up in full gear, they quite literally separated the men from the boys. The intensity and talent level of college athletes competing for a starting spot is much different from the heat you feel from those who are fighting to feed their families and prolong a career of glory, fame and wealth beyond their wildest dreams.”
      Anything but retirement.

    Glad you had fun at the football game! I used to love watching football with my dad until he died. Haven't really cared about it since then. When you know what the mission is for each different position on the field it gets more exciting. Then you can see how the strategy works and how they finesse it throughout the game. The reason it stops and starts so much is due to television - they have to run ads throughout the game so every time they stop, it's for a commercial on TV. When the teams aren't that good, it's fun just to go to the stadium and try all the different food and drink. Most stadiums have stadium building down to an art and try to make it just as interesting for the people who don't really care about the game. ;-)

There’s so much tradition and things to do all day before the game, and you get a real experience of how tailgating works. We’ll totally adopt you!

    We got the word "soccer" from the Brits. For a while, in the UK, there was something called "Association Football", which was shortened to "soccer". That's when it came over here to the US. Not long after, Britain decided to use Football as the official name for the sport. In the US, we kept calling it what we'd always called it.
    As for American Football, Scotland most certainly had it. Ever hear of the European Football League? The Scottish Claymores were a championship team. While the rules were a little different from the NFL rules, they were actually a subsidiary of the NFL.

Back in 1985, when I was in the US Navy at Alemeida NAS, I took my three duaghters to my friends, Liz and Sam's house for the Super bowl between the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots. Liz's parents were from Scotland visiting.. By half time, Sam was asleep in his recliner, Liz was making snacks in the kitchen, Liz's mom was reading stories to my daughters and Liz's two sons upstairs. That left me and Liz's dad watching the game. Her Dad looked at me at said "So, this is your exciting American football." Still makes me smile.

    I just watched this, two years late and I’m not about to read over 2k comments, but I’ve got to say, I’m not a football fan, but the greatest experience ever is going to the Big House at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor to experience Wolverine football. Especially if you get the pregame experience! This isn’t just tailgating, yes there is that, but if you can get tickets to the university pregame, you get the U of M pep band, the cheerleaders, catering, and then THE. GAME. Nothing beats a college game, sitting above the marching band! NOTHING! That’s passion.
