    My Greek teacher made me listen to it in the first year, to introduce Greek. I'm now in the second year and we need to learn and repeat the alphabet. Of course I use this song!

    Very good. I am trying to teach my 2y old son the Greek alphabet ( as he already knows the English one ) and as a Greek myself, i can say that it is the best song found and the closest you can get to the accurate pronunciation!

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  11 ปีที่แล้ว +57

    You are correct Rolando - I mention "Erasmian" in the description.
    I added the "koine" to the title because I was getting so many negative comments from native Greek speakers, so I just wanted to clarify in the title that I wasn't doing the modern Greek alphabet

    Thank you so much for this! I'm learning koine Greek, and this has been a huge help. I'm impressed with your patience with the posters who don't take the time to read comments or the description before posting.

    First, I'm a Harry Potter lover too! I'm not an archaeologist, but I am a Biblical scholar and teach Biblical Greek. My pronunciation is correct for Koine Greek. But Greek changed over time and modern Greek is different today.
    Saying "eye" for pie, phi is an anglicization/americanization of the pronunciation. Hope this helps!

    For the nay-sayers, Berkley also has a site for the sounds of attic Greek. This is pretty much the Erasmian method. Search for "berkley attic greek pronunciation"

    @SchnauzerGR you studied ancient greek in school in Greece and you did it using MODERN pronunciation. On the other hand worldwide generally ancient Greek is studied with the Erasmian pronunciation, that is different from modern pronunciation. Neither modern nor erasmian pronunciation are the way Greek was spoken back 2000 or 2500 years ago. The same occurs with modern and classic latin pronunciation

  • @DannyZacharias

    It is the ancient names of the letters yes. The names and sounds have changed in modern Greek

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Rania. I did try to provide some justification within the description. I have toyed with the idea of creating another version using the "restored koine" pronunciation, but it is also not quite modern Greek.

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @silenteyesspy Thanks for your kind (and slightly racist) words. If you would take a minute to read both the description and the comments, you would see that this is part of a package for teaching koine Greek, in order to read the New Testament. There are numerous theories and modern reconstructions for how Greek at the turn of the era may have been pronounced. The most popular method used for Koine Greek is called "The Erasmian Method" of pronunciation. That is what is used here.

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks :-) Check out the rest of the collection too !

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheMineManiac Thanks for the info. It isn't quite clear from the title or description, but this is part of a package for teaching koine Greek, specifically for those wanting to read the New Testament. We don't really know how they spoke dead languages. Most koine Greek teachers follow Erasmian pronunciation, others follow modern Greek. All that to say, it wasn't meant for learning modern Greek :-) I make no claim to knowing modern Greek - I wish they were identical though !

  • @raniakounadi9585
    @raniakounadi9585 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear Danny,
    This is not a comment I just wanted to reply on your reply (whithout having the intention to keep doing that and waste your time :) )
    I am aware of the Erasmian Pronunciation. However, in Greek schools we never learn about it and we pronounce the ancient texts with the modern pronunciation. I beleive that there must be some scientific or at least sensible reasons behind that.

  • @Boelesap

    To conclude, as regards with Sciences in general and in particular with Social Sciences (like linguistics, phonology etc) there is a degree of acceptance and/or a possibility of the findings being true.These should always be presented first to avoid confusions!

    great this song

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    @SchnauzerGR Please read all of my previous comments. Let me reiterate - I KNOW THIS ISN'T MODERN PRONUNCIATION. It is based on the Erasmian method of pronunciation, used primarily for those who are learning in order to read NT Greek, not speak it. For the record, I am not a native speaker of koine Greek. Neither is anyone else who has criticized- it was 2,000 years ago :-)
    I've tried to make this clear in the name of the song, in the description, and comments. Sorry for misleading anyone.

  • @DannyZacharias
    @DannyZacharias  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @christy14141 Thanks for your kind words, I'm the idiot that sang this !! But you may want to ask what idiot taught you :-) I'm utilizing Erasmian pronunciation, used by the majority of Koine Greek scholars. I don't blame your misunderstanding, I actually learned it the way you are describing too, but that is an anglicization of the pronunciation. If you read the comments you'll see that some think we're both wrong !! do you also say ksee for ξ? And eye-oat-a for ι ?

    ok to be clear to everyone, use your heads.
    IF you have to compare the ancient Greek accent with English accent and the modern Greek accent, which one would you prefer? ACCENT always varies from place to place where they all speak the same language, why this would be different 2000 years ago?? It would be even more intense.
    Modern Greek accent is the closest we have to ancient Greek pronunciation, period

    how could you possibly know how greek was pronounced 2000 years ago? the only thing we know for certain is what we assume from writing mistakes such as assimilation of ei, oi or eta with the sound of iota. Also greek transcriptions of latin names and vice versa is of some help but not really reliable since we do not know either how latin was spoken back 2000 years ago. don't presume to know how greek was spoken because you are greek (don't get me wrong, I am greek too)
