There are lots of people (more than you would think) that don’t care for promotions. Climbing the corporate ladder is not a life goal for many of us. Being “stuck” at a remote job that allows me to have the freedom to live wherever I want and not having to commute to an office (to do more remote work) sounds like a deal to me.

I think that they use case here is for employees who are a decade or less away from retirement. If you already know that you’re going to be leaving the workforce in a few years, and you have no interest in continuing to grow your career, the added flexibility of fully remote work while maintaining your standard of living makes an unbelievable amount of sense.

I will take a lack of promotion in exchange for no commuting costs, no hotel costs for staying overnight, more time with my kids, more time active in my community helping my neighbors, and more time building my small business. Someday we are going to hold these CEO's responsible for being humane to their employees. Working from home etc is a privelage yes, but also being humane and not running your company like a dictator is something you do owe your employees. You owe your employees to be a humane boss and in that, you owe the employees policies that make them feel human. Which recognizes the wants and needs they have as human beings. I will be so glad when we start holding these CEO's and the government responsible for overseeing these CEO's according to this.

The fact that companies are willing to risk losing people that perform in their role on the basis of where the employees sit while they work demonstrates that they are willing to be less competitive so they can keep their old way of working.

Our meetings are still on Teams and we still ping each other instead of walking over to talk lol. It’s so stupid. Glad we have hybrid. When I have deadlines I tell them I’m WFH so I can get it done. I remember working in a office we would have a 30 minute morning meeting that always ran almost an hour, my boss was upset that people didn’t read emails he sent at 4:00 am on our way to work and as a supervisor I had to have small various meetings with different employees plus get my own work done. As a bonus sometimes there would be a wrap up meeting on the way out. I was barely getting any work done.
I suggested working from home to my boss and he hated the idea but went forward because of Sandy. Fast Forward we became hybrid. He also hated that so much he hired a productivity company all the way in Israel that told him we were producing way more from home with less errors (I think because we weren’t interrupted with nonsense every 30 minutes). With all that said he made nonsense rules like this when people worked at home, he did a Facebook rant no one wants to work, many of his good good people quit but now his whole business is remote and half of what it once was.
At this point who is really looking for the latest Dell products.

My entire team is remote workers and has been like that for years now. There are challenges for sure with managing remote workers and it takes extra effort to ensure good team performance and business culture. However, I'd argue you must do that either way to be an effective manager/business leader. Even before remote work, 60% of my work was remote via conference calls that I just took in my office on-site as with many large corporations, not everyone works in the same building or city.
If Dell leadership truly feels all employees must be on-site to be successful then say that. On the surface though, it comes across as a slimy cost-saving tactic to not have to lay people off. Interesting choice as this seems even worse for company culture vs laying off employees. Additionally, you will now continue to pay salaries to people who will be even less motivated to perform in their role, if remote only. Dell is a large company and many meetings would be digital anyway for those coming into the office (most likely why they had a hybrid approach even before Covid!). You just now will have an even worse company culture and employees who don't care at all to perform in their roles.

I was hired as and work as remote. Since every call is recorded, every email and text kept track of, plus I have to run numbers every HOUR on my productivity, every appt. held and sold tracked--there is no doubt I am working while remote. I was hired as remote--and there is no way I would move half-way across the country to live in an outrageously expensive area, put up with sub-par housing as there is no way I could afford to replace my life-style in that new location. I would expect the company to honor the expectations I was hired under. Plus, I was offered promotions several times--and I turned them down as it would involve moving.

This is because many cities will give these companies large tax incentives for hiring people within a certain distance from an office building. This is a way to gradually cull the remote head count and hire those local to the offices and then benefit from said tax incentives. Not really sure what the motivation is behind this, but here we are.

If a person is able to be effective remotely, then they deserve raises. The is a such thing as inflation. I definitely do understand middle management not being able to quantify the work or just the difficulty in quantifying the work, but instead of such a policy, then there could b practices or equations that can help quantify remote contribution. Fact of the matter is, our body keeps score of each and every social interaction and some people have lower threshold for certain activity. Is there standards? Yes. As an introvert who works " in person" it is my duty to make sure that I am healthy in all aspects to meet the requirement of my 40 hour work week. Should my 40 hours be enough to cover my needs and some of my wants? Yes. Should disabled people be able to meet their needs and wants? Yes.

Dell just screwed themselves. My company like countless others have realized that work from home is the future and will be fast to let go of workers not performing when working from home. This also gives these companies massive advantages over more of a traditional company that want people to be in the office. There more traditional companies will have Rents to pay on massive buildings and it will effect their bottom line. Also high skilled workers like myself have already told companies who try to get us to leave our work from home positions, NO we are not doing it. So these more traditional companies will continue to lose the battle for talented people because they will all be hard workers who go work for fully remote companies. This will create a massive brain drain on traditional companies because of their stupidity to keep people working in an office.
Companies can either Adapt or Die and many of these return to office companies will be replaced by remote work companies because their services will be much cheaper.

  • @DrKnowsMore

Let me explain something to you because you clearly don't get it. Dell does not give a flying fuck about promoting any of these people and they don't care if half of their employees opt for or else and they end up getting rid of them. Their goals are twofold. First, they want to make things uncomfortable for work at home employees so that they will quit and Dale doesn't have to downsize and pay severance. Second, they're testing loyalty because they're looking at another round of layoffs. Even if you think the company couldn't function but after laying off half of its employees, you have to remember that the tech sector is a wash and unemployed people right now. Dell knows this. All management has to do is go to the massive pool of people they've probably accumulated with false job advertisement designed to strictly to create an easy access, quick hire list. Don't think your outsmarting your employer, because chances are you're shooting yourself in the foot.

If you want to work the same job for 3 deacdes appreciate the fact that the pay for that position wont go up as fast as inflation. Add more value to your conpany if you want the company to add more compensation.

Though sounds strange, it’s not 100% bad nor it means no love for remote employees. Promotion requires in person collaboration to develop self and others using real human interaction instead of chat and planned virtual meetings.

stay remote. Office politics will get you promoted, or fired. If you have numbers to meet for your job, why sit in traffic and deal with the craziness? Work in bed in your pajamas... We are not on assembly lines in factories anymore. All work should be remote, unless it is manual labor

    I disagree with Ken.
I find it to be a well played balance between the companys’ preference and needs while remaining considerate of individual needs.
If folks really value remote work, they will likely be willing to compromise.
I say good job Dell finding a win/win in a world of either/or.

    • @Times397
      @Times397 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

No, it’s definitely passive. By doing this, Dell is saying you are stuck with zero growth as one of their remote workers. If they were being direct, they would say they no longer are allowing remote workers as they believe it hinders one’s growth opportunities.

I disagree with Ken on this. There are good employees that need the job, but do not have ambitions to get promoted or move to the coolest role. Think of a 50-year old accountant or procurement manager. They have the expertise and experience, but no further ambitions.
This approach from Dell ensures that the careers and lives of these people are not disrupted.
I just can’t understand what is bad or passive-aggressive here. I think this is a very inclusive and employee-friendly policy by Dell.
