As a high school child, I was at a classmate's house who had a Loquat tree in fruit. Never tasted them before that day. We sat on the chook house roof and ate every ripe Loquat. I had a gut's ache for 2 day's and the shit's for 2 day's more. Didn't put me off the. Now I'm 68 and every time I see a tree in fruit I eat my fill. Yummmmm, Yummmmm.,
@@MN-qc1mw it may be in the wrong location i know they require space moisture and lots of sun light and need to be pollinated but it depends i know my neighbors have a loquat tree at home in a small space alongside other trees of different kinds and it doesnt fruit he's keeping it because it looks nice and is a souvenir from his deceased father, but he has a bunch on his farm, and they fruit just fine. Also, he mentioned something about how they need to be around other loquat trees so they bear fruit, but I dont know how true that is. My guess would be that it has to do something with pollination.
I agree George, they are very attractive-looking trees, worth growing just for the ornamental value. They can even grow here in the UK, I may never get fruit from it, but that doesn't bother me.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and I can hear in your comments how you respect the loquat trees! I bought some fruits from a farmer in Naples Italy and the fruit were the size of eggs. I planted a bunch of these seeds and now I have about 15 baby plants¡ 😂😅.
Correction... they don't even really require water or light. Found like 80 growing in my forgotten compost box about 2cm apart in pitch black and total dryness, about 8 inches tall, too. I live in Los Angeles, I have a buddy with one on his hilcrest and it never gets anything besides rain (not often).
Great video! My partner is Italian and got me into loquats (nespola). We have one in a pot and one in the ground and both doing really well. They are beautiful looking trees and as you said very hardy!
I had to try to plant this tree 2x, the first one died, the second one kinda of struggle a little during the summer due to the over heating in Northern California but eventually once the root systems take hold, it seem to grow fast.
Last year in Melbourne, while cleaning the backyard, saw some seeds that I don't recognise. I planted them and 2 of them grew into small plants. This year, the birds raided somebody else's loquat tree and dumped over 50 seeds. I described the seed and the plant to a friend and he told me it's a loquat tree. Now, I am trying to germinate this year's seeds and hopefully have more loquat plants of my own.
Had a beautiful tree in Inverell that fruited like crazy. They thrive in the cold. They are though, bad for fruit fly and are proscribed in some areas.
Loquats are readily available in The USA. Most people get a bunch of fruit from someone else, and get plenty of seeds. Nurseries will have potted plants available.
Some say that they are an are invasive weed, whereas I say that would be far better than all the rainforests that were cleared around the country for grazing livestock.
How long does it take to fruit in case of seedling. I have 2 of them both are 4 years old and over 10 feet great foliage but they haven’t been fruiting
Before you plant the seeds, taste the fruit first. It will give you an indication of the end product. Always ask before taking, its the right thing to do.
Nice loquats, strangely my mature tree is going downhill right now. I dunno if it’s my sticky wet clay soil or something else. I’ll have to put a volunteer aside..
I’m in coastal Denmark, my garden’s microclimate is 8b, I’ve got 2 loquats in the ground grown from seed since 2016 I don’t have fruit, I’m growing them for the looks. I reckon I possibly could get some flowers this year, the size is right. They already started growing again in March. 1 of the local nurseries started stocking plants 2 years ago. You can hardly ever buy the fruit, other than online.
They can but usually, the fruits are a bit on the sour side if the area is truly tropical (never drops below 15 C) they can survive in zone 8B (down to -9C) but can fruit properly only in Zone 9 (and above)
@@cerverg thanks. Not sure how I find out my zone. Has a distinct hot and dry season and a rain season and then a cold season. I am in Quang binh central Vietnam. 5c to 40c. Thanks for the reply
those loquats are small fruited. It would pay to get some large fruited ones, 3 times that size. Loquats are the best tree for a newly married couple to plant. The trees grow fast and are good safe trees for kids to climb, with good crops of fruit by the time kids are old enough to climb .
@@RealLifeFruitopia I have grown 50 from seed to fruiting and although there is a bit of variation in some foliage, the fruit did come true to the parent.
Interesting info and examples. Got my first fruit this yr on substantial young (4" trunk) 'Champagne' loquat, maybe I'll have invasion of new trees under it. 9a low inland N. Commifornia. Avos have far superior fruit you can nearly live on, not comparable to loquat in that respect.

Common tree in South Africa
I grow loquats in North Central Florida. I love this fruit.
When I was in my sub-tropical 8a, this was the first fruit tree I bought. Good advice👍🏼
Good stuff!

Friends from Italy have told me of the large loquats(nespole in Italian). They marvel at how small the varieties are in the US.

P.S. Love your humour 🤣 "I don't wanna be here look" classic.
Very cool!
Thanks mate!
As a martial artists, I love the loquat.
Wooden swords were made from loquat. The Muye Dobo Tongji mentioned the loquat wood as shaft for spear
Thanks. I didn't know that!

Once established, loquat is bullet proof. Keep soil moist in summer.
my cat loved this video - because I call her a baby loquat - because she looks like one!
Cute!

Good plan, they are easy to germinate and grow.

You have a very enthusiastic delivery!! Subscribed!!!!
Welcome aboard!
I can't wait to plant more of this tree in my area, because it looks like I might be the only one on my island that has a fruiting tree.
Good idea!
I’m in zone 9b Loquats look amazing year round with zero attention👍
The best!
I love gardening! I wish I could get some seed from you! Unfortunately, I'm in USA!
Loquat is easy to source. Check Lowes in spring.

They certainly thrive in your area George 👍

My seedling fruited in 3 years from seed. My grafted tree died after 2 years in ground, it flowered but didn't fruit.
Hi, can you please suggest best louquats to grow in Melbourne?
Any will do. I have 3 different varieties which are great.
Try a few handfuls of gypsum
Will loquat fruits ripen after i cut them ? The birds love to eat them but when i taste it its still sour.
You have to bag them to get maximum ripeness. Also, refrigerating them makes them super tasty.
I'm in Cape Town was scared to put mine in the ground but now I'm doing it🎉🎉
There's only 1 reason to grow any fruit tree. For the fruit.
I'm in inland North Carolina 8a U.S. and you have sold me. I'm going to try growing them.
Should do well for you.
Which variety do you suggest for Melbourne weather?? Howz enormity??
Every variety is good for Melbourne. Upto you how big and sweet you prefer them.
This is one of the videos that inspired me to grow Loquats from seed. Now I have 10 seedlings in containers.
Hopefully they bear fruits in 5 years
Well done!
The Loquat’s are an invasive weed’s in Australia they come up in our bush. You need to net the trees when fruiting.
I welcome invasive fruiting trees over the environmental disaster of grazing land having taken over lush native forests around the country!

It's really sad that you can't buy the fruit. Well done for trying to grow your own!!
Can u please tell me the month of flowering?
I think you just had a coffee before making this video.
One cup every day.
Is extreme sun rays harmful for them?
Yes, in the first year.
I grow loquats in North Carolina, they’re very productive when they fruit. Too many for one
We share with the birds 🐦 🐦⬛ 😀
Where can I get one?
Either from a street grown fruit seed or local nursery.
Only 1 reason to grow loquat. Stores don't sell it.
My loquat looks like it's about to do something
I have never seen it around where i live
Are you talking -5 Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Always in Celcius 👍
Can they do well in a hotter area? I am in a tropic/sub tropical zone. None are grown in my area, but have ordered one.

I live in Sydney which is subtropical but the fruit is sour
@@andrewbrowne4050 that's a very mild tropical Influenced subtropical area with no frost so the fruit will be sour apparently
Mine are sour if not fully ripe, wait till the skin is dark yellow. I like the taste when both sour and sweet.

In Dziri (algerian language): مشيمشة Meshimsha / M'shimsha.
In tamazight (berber): ⵝⵓⵠⵔⴻⵙⵝ Tubrest.

In Spanish: mispero
the eternal question - loquat or ice cream bean tree?
when i walk to work there is a nice old loquat tree with fruit hanging over the sidewalk - as much fruit as you can take!
Loquat
I have a lot of plant from this tree.
Doesn’t it take 8-10 years to get fruit from a tree grown from seed? I assumed its the same with Loquat.
No.
5 years

Invasive species! They will overtake a yard in no time
Maybe in the tropics, but not in my climate zone.
