    Oh wow! I knew about the evisceration part (I volunteered at an Aquarium for a year in High School), but I had no idea that they could de-differentiate cells as their means of regrowing organs! That is absolutely fascinating. I also didn't know that some species will push the organs out the front end.
    Yay learning! :D I will definitely have some good fun facts to share with my extended family over mealtimes this weekend ;)

      Well, one way an animal and a human can drop its organs, (pelvic prolapse) is a result of birth. The amount of pressure on the organs can force your pelvic organs out of certain 'areas'. It is a very interesting subject. I love biology and botanology, I love to study weird things like this. 😛

      Not normal, but rectal prolapse can also happen to humans, for example as a result of heavy parasite infestation, such as Trichuris trichuria. Don't Google it for photos, they are horrible (you've been warned)

    Dedifferentiated? So, turning them into stem cells?
    They managed to do that with mouse skin cells, to make mouse egg cells, fertilise them, and therefore, little mouse babies. So taking a human stem cell - or making one - and growing a leg out of it isn't impossible.

    I saw this happen in an Ecology class and it was the coolest thing. We thought one was dead (the muscles usually contract when you touch the cucumber, this one didn't so we assumed it was dead) and decided to dissect it. while my teacher was holding it it spewed it's guts and we realized it was alive and well (and returned it to the ocean). Needless to say it was a pretty awesome thing to experience.

    I was under the impression that evisceration in sea cucumbers was a last ditch effort and since it took so much energy to regenerate they often died from the process, do they actually survive most of the time? (I only took one class on this in college, nowhere near an expert)

    • @grossscienceshow
      @grossscienceshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rachel Dutch Hey Rachel, I asked an expert, José E Garcia Arrarás, about this. Here's what he said: "I would say, that she is right that evisceration would be the last thing a sea cucumber would do, since it is certainly a huge need of resources to regenerate the tissues. That is why usually species that have cuverian tubules would release those first. However, animals do survive evisceration and regenerate if provided the appropriate environment. In our years of study, most animals will regenerate without problem following evisceration."
