Arrrgh! What an ordeal! My proctectomy did not go well either - my large abdominal incision wound opened up, I had problems with the wound VAC I was on, my anal wound opened up after it had seemingly healed. But it does eventually get better!
    Hang in there!

I'm hoping so!! How long did your wound take to heal properly? Xx

+kateellenberry After two years, I still don't consider it fully healed and I still get bleeding sometimes... I had a lot of complications because of the (defective) wound VAC I was using... :(

      +Vegan Ostomy what is VAC?

+kateellenberry Literally a vacuum that's supposed to heal wounds! I wrote about it here: www.veganostomy.ca/2014/04/perianal-disease-a-timeline-part-2.html and in part 4, you can see my healing timeline (very graphic BTW).

+Vegan Ostomy wow I'd never heard of the VAC before! Just read your post - very informative, thank you! Hoping my wound heals quickly :( not been brave enough to have a look since they drained it.. Xx

Blimey! Glad you're finally on the mend now though! Yay! :) Gas and air definitely took me by surprise on Tuesday, that light-headed distant feeling is so weird - thankfully it worked for me (I went through an entire canister!) Tramadol on the other hand made me sick! Blegh! Can't wait to hear how you are in a few weeks x

I get on well with oral tramadol but the IV tramadol makes me feel horrible too. A nurse I spoke to said it often has that affect! I think I probably just had way too much gas & air all at once.. Hope you feel better soon xx

Glad to hear your operation went well, apart from the complication. I think I am going to have the same operation by the end of the year. However I think I will have an abdominal wound also, so two wounds to heal! From what I have read the majority of people are very happy with the outcome afterwards. Hope your recovery is swift and look forward to your next update! j

Thanks James. My surgeon wasn't sure whether he'd be able to do it 'keyhole' or whether he'd need to open my tummy up too, so I didn't know until I woke up whether I'd have the big tummy scar too! Good luck on your surgery if you have it xxx

+kateellenberry Yeah, that will be the case for me also. Will only find out once I have woken up! I keep telling myself that may be I could still keep it longer term and get it treated and it will clear up. But it is badly inflamed so very unlikely I would think. Have u ever had to go on oral steroids for the treatment of the stump? I've just used suppositories for it. I took oral steroids once for an auto immune condition I had and the side effects were horrendous x

+James W no I didn't take any oral steroids for the stump because of the side effects! I took them a lot for my UC before the sub total colectomy.. I did have steroid suppositories and steroid enemas to try to treat it topically but they didn't help much and actually inserting the enema caused bleeding so I stopped using them.. That's why it meant either starting a long term aggressive medication (such as infliximab) or have the proctectomy.. I'm glad I've had the surgery as I know once I'm recovered I'll be UC free! It is a bigger procedure than I expected though >_

+kateellenberry Thanks. Yeah that makes me realise that I should get it done most probably, otherwise I will just spend years fiddling around with treatments that either aren't working or aggravating it further. In fact the suppositories do seem to aggravate it and I end up losing blood so seems counter productive. Think its just the kind of surgery it is which is hard to get head around. But probably best to just get it over and done with then move forward again! Such a shame no treatments seem to work for the stump! x

Hey. Thanks for posting this video, I’ve found it very useful as am now 2 weeks post-op and again haven’t been able to find much info about recovery, especially for younger people.
In regards to your infection I don’t know if I am experiencing something similar as I am in a little bit of pain during the night once my tramadol has worn off and am also finding a bit of discharge from the wound which is white and a little smelly. I have a follow up appointment with the surgeon next Wednesday so am going to get it checked over but just wondered through your experience whether this was similar to your experience?
Thanks again for the video - very useful :)

Mark Felgate sorry I haven't responded sooner- TH-cam doesn't seem to be sending me notifications!! I hope your recovery is going well :) sounds like you could have had an infection, so I hope your surgeon spotted it before it got worse! Xx
