In high school a few years ago I was walking in the courtyard, a small but sever storm had just gone over us. Suddenly I felt a bunch of static electricity, all the hairs on my arms just stood up. I had heard many stories of people almost being struck by lightning so I knew instinctively to GET LOW. Just then lightning struck 10 feet away from me. It was the loudest, brightest, scariest thing I have ever experienced.
Last line is what near lighting escapers like me will tell Loudest, brightest ,scariest rod of electricity. I too missed a lighting bolt by 10 feet . Still have PTSD from it. I never ever go outside as soon as it is about to rain.

So take everything here with a grain of salt I welcome being proven wrong, and having my education updated. For those who don't know, there are two kinds of lightning. Negative lightning Positive lightning. In general, 90% of lightning is negative. 10% tends to be positive. Negative lightning is a quick flash, followed by a brief clap or bit of thunder. Startling if it's close, but not terribly loud. Positive lightning is a much nastier beast. It sparks MUCH hotter, which means it's much brighter. So the air expands that much faster. Which makes positive lightning *much* louder. And the worst bit, (and this is how you can easily recgonize positive lightning) is that positive lightning _lingers._ As i said, negative lightning is naught but a flash or few flashes. Positive lightning is one or two incredibly bright, prolonged plasmid cataracts of light that cut through the sky. Which fade out quickly, but noticeably, like a shut-off fluorescent bulb. And because it lingers, as well as a positive bolt usually being rather long compared to negative bolts, the thunder is not only much louder, but it carries on for a fair bit longer. That long, cascading roll of thunder you sometimes hear in movies or cartoons? Yeah. That's positive lightning. It can and does happen that way. And it can be tinnitus-inducingly loud if it strikes within half a mile. I suspect it's extra brightness is due to the nature of it's power. And physicists here correct me if im wrong. Negative lightning channels/transmits electrons. Which are the smallest and lowest mass of the 3 particle types in a standard atom. Whereas positive lightning transmits/channels Protons. Which are larger and more massive. Thus more energy is involved. And it lingers because the air is hot enough to be a plasma momentarily. If you see an abnormally, or incredibly bright bolt of lightning that lingers solid (not strobing) for more than a flash's worth, or even a full second, prepare your ear drums. I bit wrong I assume when you said that instead of electrons it transfers protons. Read up a little on positive lighting (first time hearing its existence) but can’t see why it would be protons transferred. It’s just a positive charge, not protons. But I may be wrong, let me go find out.

But i do love meteorology and physics.
So take everything here with a grain of salt
I welcome being proven wrong, and having my education updated.
For those who don't know, there are two kinds of lightning.
Negative lightning
Positive lightning.
In general,
90% of lightning is negative.
10% tends to be positive.
Negative lightning is a quick flash, followed by a brief clap or bit of thunder. Startling if it's close, but not terribly loud.
Positive lightning is a much nastier beast. It sparks MUCH hotter, which means it's much brighter. So the air expands that much faster. Which makes positive lightning *much* louder.
And the worst bit, (and this is how you can easily recgonize positive lightning) is that positive lightning _lingers._
As i said, negative lightning is naught but a flash or few flashes.
Positive lightning is one or two incredibly bright, prolonged plasmid cataracts of light that cut through the sky. Which fade out quickly, but noticeably, like a shut-off fluorescent bulb.
And because it lingers, as well as a positive bolt usually being rather long compared to negative bolts, the thunder is not only much louder, but it carries on for a fair bit longer.
That long, cascading roll of thunder you sometimes hear in movies or cartoons?
Yeah. That's positive lightning. It can and does happen that way. And it can be tinnitus-inducingly loud if it strikes within half a mile.
I suspect it's extra brightness is due to the nature of it's power. And physicists here correct me if im wrong.
Negative lightning channels/transmits electrons. Which are the smallest and lowest mass of the 3 particle types in a standard atom. Whereas positive lightning transmits/channels Protons. Which are larger and more massive. Thus more energy is involved. And it lingers because the air is hot enough to be a plasma momentarily.
If you see an abnormally, or incredibly bright bolt of lightning that lingers solid (not strobing) for more than a flash's worth, or even a full second, prepare your ear drums. Cause they're about to get a pounding.
Oh, so that's what blinded and made me deaf for a couple of seconds at the restaurant, that's nice info!

I bit wrong I assume when you said that instead of electrons it transfers protons. Read up a little on positive lighting (first time hearing its existence) but can’t see why it would be protons transferred. It’s just a positive charge, not protons. But I may be wrong, let me go find out.

It’s probably because it feels like the air is vibrating when lightning strikes that close to you.
プレ イズ ガMilkNCoffee you do feel it though it feels like a very loud base of coming from a speaker at least that’s how it felt when one struck near my job while I was outside. I felt it in my chest that’s how strong and loud the impact is it’s quite nerve racking.

I saw a lightening strike hit a silo about 100 yards from me once. It was friggin amazing and awe inspiring to see.
This is a good reminder of how weak we humans really are against nature

Y'know I'm honestly really surprised that house only sustained minimal damage.
This happened to me once, it wasn’t as close as some of these, but it was close enough to feel something. It was absolutely terrifying so I feel bad for all these people
