    Took apart my rat 1 today. Watched this video twice and it now it’s 10X better. Didn’t have oil on the washers. Used KPL to lube it up. Action is super slick now. Thanks Nick. Your videos are the best!

    I love how you set up your thumb nails for your videos. All reviews are of the knife open and all disassemblies are of the knife closed. It makes it easier for people in there phone (me) to know what kind of video it is without clicking on it because you can't read the whole title. It's a gem and as are you Sir Nick. Thank you and this was just the video I was watching when I noticed it. Cheers! 👍🏻

    I like my Rat1. I bought a Rat1a (assisted) but went back to my standard Rat1. The assisted opening is crap. They put a torsion spring in the pivot point. Mine was so hard to open that you had to use both hands to open it...

    Hi Nick,
    Just a small detail... Lost my old Rat 1 so I had to buy a new one.... New models DO NOT have the d shape cut out... Back spacers rotate freely now.... Just something to keep in mind...

      Re the 3 year old post about the new model rats not having D shaped spacer pins...? I bought a brand new rat 1 from a reputable dealer 2 weeks ago, and its 100% deffo got D shaped pins. So I'm thinking that the one with round pins is most likely a chinese copy of the original RAT ...🤷‍♂️??

  • @rickoshay545
    @rickoshay545 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I installed a .020" thick bronze washer on the left (non locking liner) side. I lapped the washer in a figure of 8 motion until the blade offered the right resistance. It is a touch stiff but will wear in. In effect, due to the shoulder on the pivot, I effectively "Sebenza'd" the Rat. It was solid before but I am here to tell you that it is MUCH more solid feeling now.
    Source for the bronze washer, 1 penny sanded/ground to .020" then lapped to tune (check the year to see which ones are actually copper/ tin/ zinc). Pivot hole dia. .242"

    I wish I came here first because with my sleep-deprived self I decided to try and maintain it but 3 hours later, two stripped screws later, a file later, and a hammer application I finally got my rat to where I wanted it and can probably never maintain it again and should just buy a new one having this one having been my guinea pig for being my first personally maintained knife

  • @s0nnyburnett

    Took me several tries to get the blade re-centered when closed, I couldn't figure out what was causing it but I kept playing with the pivot screws until I guess and checked it correct. Thought I had ruined my knife. At least mine was flawless on the inside of the liners.

    • @ethanh296
      @ethanh296 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the blade on a lot of the rats (2 and 1) is pretty off center but only when closed, because of the liner pushing on the blade when closed. Not a big deal at all mines like that as well, I took it apart, didn't feel like doing it again, plus mine came like that so i didn't care.

    Hey there, Nick. New Subscriber. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on something cheap and simple like a Svord Peasant Knife (I guess the closest thing to compare it to is an Opinel). I enjoy your Thrifty Thursday series, and have developed an appreciation for rough-around-the-edges kind of knives, since big name brand knives are so damn expensive here in South Africa (weak exchange rate, shipping, customs, and local retailers trying to make ridiculous profits. It all adds up). We regularly pay 3-4 times the US price, and it's kinda nuts to think that it's often more affordable to get a decent custom knife from a good SA knifemaker than it is to buy something like a Spyderco PM 2.
    Oh well, I've learned to find the joy in my Moraknivs and Peasant Knives.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      South African Knife prices are out of control. 3x US Prices for a Spyderco Tenacious! I've been meaning to check out the Peasant for a while, maybe I will!

      @NickShabazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then again, you guys have some stellar custom makers down there. It was a regret of my trip that I didn't have a chance to make it to visit any. Beautiful country otherwise, at least in parts!

  • @zdp-189
    @zdp-189 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My green guy used to be superb action. Lately I noticed the liner lock moved over farther, and was harder to disengage and close the knife. No biggied I figured, did full tear down and clean, and put back, and now the blade touches the right liner when closed! I kept taking apart reseating, even sweapped nylon/PB washer order...boom nothing. It seemed each time I put back together, my once perfectly centered Rat1 was now permenantely defected to one side on the liner scraping when shut. I tried everything possible, a dam shame out of the blue this started to go south. It seems odd to me the washers ID is bigger than that pivot collar too. Could it just be poor workmanship rearing its ugly head finally (Don't get me started in the Carter Prime I just had to get smooth out of box with IKBS explosions) EDIT: And yes centering those washers is key, but even so it still seems off- maybe I need to order new ones.

    Hey Nick, what program do you use to edit your vids? You might want to use a high pass filter on de audio. I can hear a low hum of I expect is the airco. It's removed easisy with a -20dB 80 Hz high pass filter. Let me know if I can help :-) Keep the vids coming :-)

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I generally shut off the air conditioner, but it was just too damned hot for this one. And I edit in Apple's Quicktime. I'm sure I could rig some sort of filter (although 80Hz with big shoulders might pinch a bit on my vocal range), good idea!

    • @PeetSneekes
      @PeetSneekes 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, I meant an digital audio-effect to filter out a certain frequency. It's part of video editors like iMovie and Final Cut X. As you use Quicktime you can't improve your video's any further as far as I know .. Switching to iMovie or an other video editor would help because it contains lot's of effects to fix small annoyances like lighting, sound, etc. Having said this, I don't mind too much, so keep going :-)

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Peet: I understood. Remember, I'm a signal processing guy for a living :)
      Quicktime is just a tradeoff to edit quickly and with minimal complexity. Time spent editing is time not spent doing the parts of this I like. Hence the low budget :D

    • @PeetSneekes
      @PeetSneekes 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doh! I totally forgot processing is your field :-) You're totally right spending time on the things you enjoy. Keep it up!

      To whom it may concern I had my answer from Ontario directely and I share with you :
      ''Because they were made with two different styled washers in the last year. One is Teflon and the other is a brass washer. We’ve had a lot of complaints about the switch so we’ve had them changed back to the other way of making them.
      We’ve had complaints about the Teflon and brass washer together. So they are in the process of being switched back to both brass washers.''
