BC has its best season ever but they lose to UNC in the regular season; lose to UNC in the ACC finals; and today fall to UNC in the National Championship semi-finals. That has to be a first. Doesn't seem fair. Oh well. Go Heels!

American field hockey likes to over commit on defense with random flings of the stick to reach and get flat footed and easily beat. Instead of choosing to defend against a player by forcing them in the direction you want them to go, ultimately players just lets the opponent do what they want and follow them until they can ultimately try to mess them up or steal. As a defender, I would be so angry when one of my attackers would just let the ball player do whatever. Ultimately, we are telling them where to try to keep the attacker to best position ourselves to come in and help and contain the ball to the best part of the field. By letting them go wherever they want, you now risk that this player can beat multiple players because defensively we have to recover to a different area and probably a more dangerous part of the field.
Also, back when I started learning field hockey about 18 years ago, we were taught to do our pulls at least the length of a stick to actually pull the ball to get around a player. We were taught to step and pull with the ball to get around the player and keep the ball within a reach where you still had strong control to keep possession. Now you see a bunch of these half assed touches to try to get around defenders and attackers ultimately do not easily keep possession of the ball as they try to dribble down the field. Don't get me wrong, the advent of the game speeding up tremendously with many teams playing on astroturf makes it easier to use speed to get around everyone, but ultimately, teams that know how to properly play defense will stop you every time if you are trying to use wimpy tactics to get around them. Which is why internationally, we suffer greatly. Purely relying on speed to just fling yourself with the ball around players will only get you so far.

to reiterate, definitely no hate on these players, because they are talented athletes. but i think the sport has gotten lazy in respect with respect to stick skills with turf speed doing a lot of the work for them.

i play field hockey in america. how is it different in australia? why is american field hockey an “embarrassment”? not trying to be rude or anything just genuinely curious as to how it’s different and why you say that.
