    I was a big fan of the Riesling-heavy JS Top 100 list. Other viewers loved it too (Riesling selection) when I went over the list.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there were certainly many of them that I enjoy as well (and had one on my 6 best buys). Riesling is a substantial percentage of my collection, but probably closer to 7-8% than 17%. I'm a big fan of Gruner from Wachau too, so I would have liked to see some of that.

    I think mr. JS caught the trend of the Riesling wagon this year, which in my opinion is a good thing : white wines are underrated and more people should appreciate them ! Cheers !

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, so many underrated white wines! Gruner veltliner and Condrieu are tremendous too. Lots of compelling Riesling values. Just hoping prices stay reasonable on the Riesling. Cheers!

      I wish they were not on the list they are basically the only fine wine value in the old world… be a shame for prices to go up

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielplainview4778 Agreed. If this keeps up, more consumers may start trying them and demand could increase.

    John, thank you so much for your takeaways from the JS’s list. I enjoy watching your videos because I learn so much from them. I like the way you pronounce “Spätlese”, and I am glad to hear that it pairs well with spicy or Asian food. I definitely need to track down the Purple Angel. I know your time is valuable, and I appreciate your wealth of wine knowledge. Stay tuned for my Top 2022 Food & Wine Instagram Influencers List of 2022. 😊

      Thank you, Gina, for the support and kind words! I've definitely been working on my pronunciations. Purple Angel is always an excellent choice! Looking forward to your list! Hope you enjoy your weekend.

    Thanks for the review. We had the opportunity to learn about Riesling and Weissburgunder last summer on a river cruise in that area. Found a nice Riesling at Weingut Stadt Krems. I’m going to see if I can find some of the Rieslings on this list.

    Mr Estager had a local tasting here and one of the things he said was that the 2022 harvest yielded half the juice you would normal expect.
    If we don't see a bumper crop in 2023, bordeaux is going to double in price next year once supply runs out early in the year.
    Even your normally budget bottles from 2016, 2018, and 2019 are going to shoot up once it's realized that the wine from lesser Chateau in 2016 are going to be better than the top showings from 2021...

    Some nice Rieslings “to live for”…😂. 19 was a high scoring year in many regions and by critics. One of the things I enjoy about wine, vintage variation.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for weighing in! Very true. 19 was an excellent vintage for sure. Vintage variation certainly adds some interest to wine. If things were too predictable it would get a little dull!

    I am disappointed that JS only featured 11 Italian wines on his list. I need to stock up on the 2016 Brunello’s! Thank you John for putting this detailed list together. I find it useful, and I appreciate your expertise. I will be checking in with you as I am in the process of purchasing a wine cooler. Have a wonderful weekend, John! Happy holidays!

      Thanks very much, Gina. Appreciate your feedback. Definitely a smaller representation for Italy on this list in 2022. The 2016s are tremendous so hopefully you can still track some down! Cheers!

    Interesting that JS awarded so many USA wines. I know there are many good wines there but after having spent a few months there this year, I observed that the $20-40 range is very disappointing. Maybe I missed out on a few gems? Maybe you could do a video on this? Any fool can spend $100 and get good wine.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Richard. Lots of the US wines JS had on his list were very pricey Napa wines. The K Vintners Walla Walla wine was $50. I’ll give it some thought. Usually include at least 1-2 USA wines in my videos at various price points. I’ll definitely give it some thought though. Oregon is probably the best bet in that range.

    There is no way to please everyone, and James Suckling for me is one of my least favourite reviewers not only because of he likes to give very high scores to almost all wines, but also because he likes a lot white wine and I personally dislike them so much that in my cellar there is not even a single bottle either of white wine and champagne ( yes, very weird I know). I agree with your approach towards substracting 5 pts from JS scores, for me it has always been between 3-5 points less. Thanks as always John.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing your approach! I have definitely found that the best way to use critics effectively is to find one whose palate most closely matches your own and then rely primarily on that person. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

    • @jimdandy6452
      @jimdandy6452 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not so weird that you have no white wines in your collection my friend! I don't either and haven't for YEARS! when I have company over I will purchase a white or two just in case someone can't drink red.

  • @ansonseow
    @ansonseow ปีที่แล้ว +1

    wonder why they would call it top / best wines of the year if there are going to be exclusions based on price? might as well make best of various range of prices. mmm

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fair point. There are definitely judgments made to try to include diversity and at least something that will appeal to everyone. My personal list will not have that exclusion. 👍🍷

  • @gentlemanjim480

    Suckling’s ratings are often ludicrously inflated and very many people in the wine industry consider him highly corrupt. Not a great critic to follow. Try Jancis Robinson instead.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t really follow him. And I explain that I deduct 5 points from most of his scores to the extent I consider his ratings. In this video, I just analyzing his top 100 for big-picture takeaways and discuss 6 wines I personally like on the list.
