    So here's my perspective as a person who started off only watching Xrd Rev 2 and then finally getting into the series with Strive because I was too much of a bitch baby to learn all of the intricacies;
    Strive was my first GG game, and I had a good time with it. I had watched a lot of Xrd because of my sister showing me the game, but it felt a little too overwhelming for a new player who was like.. new to GG but not new to fighting games. So I had this air of... "I want to hit the baseline level I consider to be decent" but that level was sooooooo high for what you actually needed to learn in Xrd.
    Played Strive a ton when it came out. Got to celestial floor for a few months in a row right after release, and then I started getting bored. I dunno like Celestial floor play was cool, but it felt like the matches were too... samey to me?
    I also wasn't a huge fan of the extremely toned down combos. I loved to watch anime fighters because of how ridiculous the combos looked. That was really my only complaint with Strive since I was completely new to the series. I had no perspective other than as a spectator on whether or not the wall mechanic was good or bad, the gatling changes were good or bad, etc.
    After I started getting bored with Strive, I went back to Xrd as I now had the super basics of the game due to having played Strive. I had a lot of fun. I started off just doing combo trials, but that was also mainly because I was trying to learn gatlings and also I swapped from pad to Hitbox right around that time for hand pain. Then I played some matches with some friends locally, but nothing too crazy.
    I realize that there is a lot of bullshit jank that was removed from Xrd going into Strive, and I'm completely thankful for that. Obviously there's stuff you talk about from Xrd -Sign- specifically, but even stuff that's still in Rev like YRC slow down from full screen on a projectile attack or how throws are just the HS button so the strength of a character's throw game is also tied to how good their HS buttons are. Like missing an air throw with Raven isn't a big deal because the "oops, I was out of range for the throw" move you get instead is actually godlike.
    I personally don't dislike the wall mechanics in Strive either.
    What I DID realize, however, was just the complete gutting of character diversity and options from Xrd to Strive. I think that's why a lot of my Celestial matches felt very same-y. There's less options and opportunities to play some of the characters in unique ways while also still being "good" options. I know they've nerfed Sol's F.S now, but basically the second I saw a Sol player matched with me, I knew I was going to be blocking F.S into F.S into F.S into possibly a frame trap maybe? but also could just be another F.S.
    And like... there wasn't a whole lot of reason to do anything else anyway. You're cranking up the risc gauge like mad if they just sit there, and getting hit by a frame trap H.S or something is a death sentence. But I felt like a lot of characters had that feel to them in Strive where everything kinda comes back to one main scenario you encounter in your matchups. That's not to say you can't change things up, but like... Ram versus Chipp is very different than Ram vs Ky but most if not all Ram vs Ky were the same as every other Ram vs Ky. At least that's the way it felt to me.
    And I think that's the main reason why people say Xrd is the god game.
    There's a lot of BS that was adjusted from Xrd to make Strive what it is, but I think they toned down the strength of the characters too much. They removed air teching which is good. They made throws their own dedicated thing which I think is good. The moves seem to have more hit stop (freeze frames when landing an attack on opponent) so you have a little bit more time to think about your next move instead of having to memorize and/or react to the situation extremely quickly like you do in Xrd. You have even more time when you land a big ass counter hit which I also think is pretty cool. I just miss being able to DO things.

      This is why I think strive can be the best gg. If it is just a bit more crazy and each character gets to really shine in their roles like before, it could be (subjectively) the best gg game.

      There's a mod I haven't actually played called Strive Plus which *looks* sick, and it's one of the reasons why I keep saying that Strive can be Strive but also be more like a Guilty Gear game at the same time.
      From what I've seen, it feels a lot more like Xrd in terms of freedom of options, but they've kept the key stuff like wall break in the game which is awesome. I think anybody who just straight up thinks they should make Strive an Xrd clone is waaay too biased, but I think there's a mixture of the two which would satisfy basically everybody.

  • @deddrz2549
    @deddrz2549 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Xrd was much more broken as a game, but as a base engine it still had a lot of options. Strive was much more stable on release but it's system isn't a base for a game that can get vastly better as time goes on like Xrd did I think. I'd like to be surprised, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are done giving options and universal mechanics to existing characters entirely, and the only thing in strive's future is new characters and stages.

    • @maxrusty3596
      @maxrusty3596 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a good point. Strive is still so much more limited and focused on universal mechanics and no matter what changes unless they change those things, the game will not get much better. The character are so bare bones.

    So even some of Guilty Gear's players are guilty of the same attitude towards newer games in the same way some MK and SF players are.
    MK9 to MKX: X sucks, 9 was better -> MKX to MK11: Some of the same people who didn't like X now praise it so much.
    SF2 to SF3: 3 sucks, 2 was better -> 3rd Strike to SF4: 4 sucks, 3 was amazing -> SF4 to SF5: 5 sucks, 4 was amazing.
    Some eople need to complain about something, right? It seems like most of the fun with some people is just talking smack on the newer games until the next one comes out so they can pretend they were cool cause they were around with the older games.
    In the end, i want to stress that I used SOME often cause obviously there are people who either prefer the newer titles or even if they prefer the older ones, there were legitimate reasons as to why other than nostalgia bias/misremembering things.
    Anyways, I'm not much into GG but nice analysis of these games. If anything this makes we want to get into them now lol

    I disagree in saying they are "Woke" for simplifying Strive. I think it's dumb to a degree.
    Like it's just in terms of overall balance which was extremely bad in GG sign.
    Strive was gonna be released way earlier if it was not for the pandemic and fans complaining on how bad the local test were.
    That game had infinites out the ass and so on. I don't think it would be as bad...as rev 2 but it was BAD.
    I'm glad strive is much better on release then what I'm seeing in Sign. I feel like if they had more stuff that people liked in Rev 2 the game would be much better and still be solid like Strive.
    But that's my opinion btw I'm not asking for a rev 3 but a happy middle with strive and Revs kit.

  • @commanderboo8879
    @commanderboo8879 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it might just be different people liking different things. It's not that deep, I don't think the same people that were dunking on Xrd Rev 2 are the same people who now say it was the good ol' days and now dunk on Strive. I think those people just stuck with whatever version they like best or just stopped playing GG. We're talking about people who have different takes on which game is best like they are a fucking hivemind and I think that's really fuckin weird. I remember the Halo community also has the concept called "the Halo cycle" which basically doesn't actually exist, but it's the idea that people will hype up the previous entry in the series while endlessly dunking on the latest one, but it's really just people liking different games. People said the same thing to me when I thought Halo Reach was trash, and now I'm one of the people defending Halo Infinite, and now there are people who love Reach and hate Infinite, I also think 3 is overrated. It's almost like people just have varied and wide opinions about different games and there isn't some cycle going on here. People just love the game that actually draw them to into the series and if the newer game doesn't have the same stuff that drew them into the series, they won't like it. It's not some hivemind kneejerk reaction it's just people having different tastes. I will say there is merit to people not realizing and forgetting that games like GG Xrd Rev 2, BBCF, or Ultra SF 4 are actually building off years and years of development and the reason the games might at times feel more robust is because that's what years and years of development time will do for them, but I find this "cycle" crap comes across more as people trying to validate their own taste in the game as if they have to rationalize why they like the newer game over the older one by painting all the people that don't like it as kneejerk reactionaries instead of just enjoying or not enjoying whatever it is they like. When a new iteration of a game comes out there are is going to be a vocal group of the fanbase that isn't going to like whatever changes no matter what, and that's ok and fine, we only act like this is so weird now because people's opinions get heard more on the internet when people have had disparate tastes on different parts of a franchise for ages.

      Thats basically how most fighting games seem to work though, the first version is kinda unbalanced and jank but it gets refined through further updates. Systems get added and refined with time and eventually you get an Xrd or an SFIV.
      Also a lot of the "issues" people have with the core gameplay (at least from what I 've seen) tends to boil down to "I liked Xrd better, why can't it be that".
