My biggest issue with these influencers was that they were acting like they were "journalists" or something by asking questions but none of them pointed out that this was the 'innovation factory' and that not all the factories actually look like this. They literally tried to lead us to believe this is how the entirety of Shein operates when this is literally the Shein press tour factory

pretty sure she was also exposed for being fake in a article because she wasn't really asking the good questions and as well was easily lead into believing that shien was doing everything right and that americans were just talking for no reason even tho ofc it wasn't the actual factory uk

Ok so if you boycott Shein then all the children that were being paid 3c per clothing item won't be paid anything and will die of starvation. The only reason people buy from Shein is because it's way cheaper, so if they put up the price, people will just buy from regular shops.

Don't forget that 99% of all fabrics jade from Bamboo are actually also just polyester... Just derived from a different source material.
And really, the process and methods of making polyester from bamboo is actually worse than just making it from oil etc.
Note, there are Some fabrics made from bamboo that hasn't been turned to polyester but, it's a much much harder process and much more expensive.

I worked a factory job once. Temp agency for low income people. We were in a hot warehouse with an assembly line, packed side by side putting Budweiser bottles full of cobwebs from one out of date box into a new box (they were empty base bottles and would be boiled before product went into them) but it was constant. And full time. We got one lunch break.

If it’s so easy, why aren’t people getting those jobs as first jobs? Why are the only people going to these temp agencies happen to be single mothers or poverty line? Because if you’ve got it good, you have better options. No one would work them if they could work something better.

The other reasons people get them is pay. Some companies pay nicely, but most don't. If you ever need to work like that again, pick an electronics manufacturer that does in-house testing. Since the electronics have to be tested in air conditioning, you'll be air conditioned too. Usually pays better than a basic goods warehouse as well. Depending on the company, the benefits are nice, too

Do robots have enough precision to operate, sew and piece together every single unique piece of said fabric patterns? Cutting pieces of fabric over and over again is repetitive and simple, so machines can replicate it, but to piece together, measure the seams and sew takes much more precision with your hand. Best thing you can do is buy from independent sellers (not as costly as one may think / look for the 'non-flashy' ones).
I am not + sized but going to local markets you'll find beautiful, BEAUTIFUL hand-made clothes (and you can tell they're hand made by the pride the sellers have in their craft/little stories that come with them) that are sold for reasonable amounts (+ last a hell of a lot longer).
Go back to what clothing used to be (an art form). Hell you could even commission your own beautiful clothing.

I decided that be the last I ever buy from shein. I just don't trust where they get their fabrics. I never brought from Shein before, and this was the only time because I was curious what their clothes were like.
if that influencer said that they use recycled materials, then why did my sweaters feel like they were made from toilet paper or something?
no girl, they paid you to make the company look good. so of course they are going to say what you want to hear. that is how companies run . so don't fake that apology that you weren't aware of their working conditions and labor laws. you did it because people caught on to you being a puppet for shein.
you didn't bother to do research because it was more important to get paid and show the glamours side of fashion. when in reality fashion comes at a price.

what confuses me is how everyone seems to assume all the clothes they buy at Walmart, Target, Kmart etc, are all sewn by happy Americans being paid a good wage, They're all made in the same freaking place, in the same freaking conditions, but there's a huge mark-up put on the clothes in US, Canada, UK, Aus etc. That's why we pay so much more for the same stuff in our own countries. Shein is cutting out the middle-man so poor folks have access to affordable clothes that actually look nice. if you go to Target or Walmart instead, you're paying more for clothes that come from the same darned place. (and no, thrift storing isn't possible for many people these days - it's often still very expensive, or anything that's nice is already bought by wealthier people who do it because it's ''cool'' to thrift).

Actually, there is a difference buying directly from Sheen (or Temu or whoever) and from a retail outlet in the UK or USA or Australia outsourcing from China
. What is manufactured for the West has to abide by certain laws, and health & safety. There are grading levels. You can do this research on Google. But if you buy directly online from Shein, they have their own manufacturers and they don’t have to answer to corporations in the west.

It's all the same garbage and it's all tainted with the blood and sweat of poor people and kids. We shouldn't be looking for "something that looks nice" but rather something that's going to last a very long time. Also, if it's cheap, you won't feel bad to chuck it out after a week if it's "not in fashion" anymore or if it's coming apart at the seams. It is unfortunately a very deep seated problem with our self image and self worth that these companies exploit because we want to make ourselves look like we're not poor and can afford finer fashion. Every time you buy a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes you have to remind yourself that someone somewhere suffered to produce that item. Respect it, try to mend it where possible and remember you don't need new clothes all the time to be a valuable person.

@@spongerobert I just saw your comment. Things that will last (ie well made) fall into the same category because they’re bought up by people who thrift shop for fun so they can show their “thrift haul” on TikTok. Where I live anyway, you get dirty stained clothes for a pretty penny. I spent $10 on a pair of pants from a dump shop the other day as my daughter urgently needed new pants and that’s the cheapest we could get at such short notice 😱
It just annoys me that people come down so hard on Shein when almost all the clothes people access these days are made in those same conditions. Yet my kids and I, having very little money, have bought some lovely stuff on Shein that we will wear until it falls apart (so far nothing has fallen apart!). The rest of our clothes usually come from “sharing shelves” which is where people dump their old clothes for the poor in the community. Almost everything we own has come from the sharing shelves over the years, aside from a trip to the dump shop in emergencies, plus old family stuff that’s been handed down for decades now. And our special stuff we bought off Shein.
Edit to clarify: we are more extreme than most when it comes to wearing things and mending them until they’re literal shreds. I’m 35 and am still wearing bras from my teens, as well as some of my grandmas old bras, and wearing clothes my mum bought second hand back in the 80s when she was young that have been re-mended all these decades. This is poverty in NZ. Meh.

I bought a Coach wallet for Srd 100, which equals to $3 based on our currency 😂. Here in Suriname 🇸🇷, it’s multi cultural and most clothing stores are owned by Chinese. It’s affordable and sad at the same time since most of the population here can’t afford “normal “ (brand) clothes 😞. So we just go with the flow since we have no knowledge how the clothes were made. The stores are always busy because that’s what 80% of the population can really afford to spend on their children and themselves 😒 what a dilemma.

I was taken by surprise when I stared getting Shein at the top of my search results any time I started looking for any specific clothing item. It must have been around a year or so ago, and they often were the only place I could find selling a specific thIng in my size. They *always* had what I wanted, and it was all *so* cheap. I never bought anything, because it was very clearly dodgy, the epitome of “if it looks too good to be true…..”
Now I’ve stared noting a similar thing with Temu, but not for clothing, for other stuff. And again, they always seem to have what I’m looking for, and they’re always right at the top of the Google search results. It’s very specific stuff too, like entomology equiptment, things you just wouldn’t expect to find on a website like that, and which usually there are just a few places online selling.
They’ve definitely got their search engine optimisation down 🤨 I think Google has some responsibility here too, because I can easily see why websites like these have become so popular since they’re the first shops that seem to appear when you search for so much stuff.

Shein also need to better their environment and rights for the employees, like having actual decent working time, having a good pay for the job and letting them actually rest

Well, according to the communist party of China, poverty in China has been eridicated 🎉 just in time for their 100th anniversary too. They also just passed a law saying you can't record or talk about poverty. You're a poor person and you did the best you could with what you had and recorded the wedding? Arrested🎉 yes, that actually happened. you can't show people are poor in China (even though 65% of them fall into the poverty category).

I spat my drink when they said that theyre pleasantly surprised to hear a lot of the stuff is automatic. For context, I sew and embroider stuff, and do a side business for plush toys. The pattern cutting/lasering fabric part like they showed on video is the START of the clothes production. Its already clear that they've completely cut off the major parts of putting the pieces together.
Lasering pieces of the fabric is, well yeah definitely machine operated. Cutting pieces of fabric over and over again is repetitive and simple, so machines can replicate it just fine with minimal effort. Even embroidery is machine sewn for sure, I use digital embroidery machines for my works and they are fully automatic, they do all the work for you.
However... They did cut out the most important step. Do robots have enough precision and sleight of hand to operate, sew and piece together every single unique piece of said fabric patterns? to piece together, measure the seams and sew takes much more precision with your hand. Sewing machines, unlike embroidery machines, are not fully automatic and require someone to press the pedal and constant monitoring with both your eyes and hands to keep going. These shein shills have never been sewing in their lives...

There are machines that can automate like sewing a shirt together but they're super expensive and I doubt shein is using them since it's something you'd show off to the camera.

Not many people know how a garment industry works. 2:32 This looks like a sample making lines to me, and not the real mass production floor. This well-aircond'ed office looks where the merchandiser staff, designers, patterner staff work lol

    Reminds me of that meme:
    - Hello, police! There's an intruder in my house who wants to kill me!
    - Actually, sir, it's illegal.
    - What??
    - Killing is illegal, sir. He can't kill you, that's officially the law.
    - But, but he's standing there with a gun, and he's...
    - Sir, I repeat, killing is illegal, he can't kill you. Stop wasting our time, please. Have a nice day, sir.
    *sounds of murder*

They literally start out by saying the place was so massive with over 85 acres of buiding facilities, but then go on to show 2 or 3 rooms in the corporate innovation & shipping facility. How is that investigative journalism? Why didn't any of them ask to see the beginning stages of the manufacturing?

Well I can believe the 10-15 minute commute. The majority of Chinese factory workers are migrant workers, meaning workers usually from poor rural areas that travel and live in a a city to work and send money home, only traveling back once or twice a year. In the meantime they live in crowded dorms or some other form of barely livable housing. Their children are cared for usually by grandparents, only seeing their parents, again, once or twice a year. Due to china's hukou system, rampant income inequality, and the rural urban economic divide, this is the only way to survive. And thus they get exploited by these companies.

I dont have a supply chain degree, but even I know these companies use contractors and sub-contractors who dont follow basic human rights. Shein can basically say that it's not techincally their company that's in violation, even though Shein should be fully responsible for the choices they make across the supply chain.
