Yamaha R1 - 2001 was a good year!

  • This is the last year of the original formula. The debut was in 1998 and they stayed pretty much the same through 2001 other than paint schemes and I think the lights/nose changed a little bit in 2000. This was a fast bike! I bought it new and put about 6K miles before buying a 2003 R1 which was fuel injected. That bike was even faster and I can't imagine how fast the current bikes are. This bike did everything right but it did headshake a bit under acceleration which made me nervous. I tried a top speed run but only got to 165 before I ran out of room... that was fast enough. I ran a best of 10:49/133 at the drags ... it would wheelie for 1/8th mile before I could plant that wheel. Fun bike!

    ThatDeltaXup...carborated bike was a wheelie machine and the clutch to throttle uhhh ooo..yeaaa!!!! Last of thattype of power on leader bikes !!! Best year R1...

    Beautiful bike man!! I have the same one but mine is all gloss black with a couple touches of blue

    nice bike.. but your wrong . the transmissions are terrible in first gen r1 bikes. I had 2 and the second gear goes and it's a bitch to fix

      I heard that of high mileage 1st gen R6s but never a prob with the R1 ...in my case anyway. I had a 99 and this 01.

    Identica a qla ke ho avuto io, un ottima Moto direi, a 28000 km circa ho dovuto fare il cambio, ho rotto la 2nda marcia, x il resto mi è piaciuta moltissimo, con scarico, centralina e filtro 167cv all albero, ho avuto un incidente mortale cn qla Moto, morto 3 volte e rianimato 2 mesi e mezzo in coma, 16 costole rotte, le clavicole e un gomito, andavo forte cmq...cmq cn scarico Mivv X Cone e il resto aveva 167cv all albero, un po troppi x la Moto le era anke se era RABBIOSAMEMTE divertente, portata in pista a Monza e Misano lho sfruttata un pokino❤😊

    Esattamente cm l avevo io e cn la quale ho avuto un incidente mortale, morto 3 volte e rianimato, 2 mssi e mezzo in coma, 16 costole rotte, le clavicole e un gomito

    Vraag me af als je bij zo r1 van uit de de 2 vol gas geeft gaat die dan achterover of dat niet!! Wil zelf 600 dit is me te gek maar vroeg me het gewoon af

      I didn't catch that. I think it's 0 to 137 mph in about 10.2 seconds.... that's what the magazine editors said. I still have the original test from Cycle, Cycle World, Motorcyclist and maybe Cycle Guide ... can't remember on that one.

    You mean to say you have NOT experienced the 2nd gear 'jumping outta gear / missing shifts' issue yet like just almost everyone else has? You will !

      I don't think so because I usually don't run the crap out of it except maybe every third blue moon.

      i have a 1999 and i just start off in 2nd gear, this way i avoid the 1-2 shift so my trans is perfectly fine.. been doing it since day 1. zero issues. i was smart about it since reports were coming in about the problem.. also, if you never ran it hard from 1-2 gear it never happened to your bike in the 1st place. sucks for you!

      @Kit Vexed Actually, had to pull complete motor out, split case halves (top / bottom) and replaced whole C/S & M/S sets with 'donor's set. Also, the #2 shift fork was toast as well. Was a 'heavily used' '01 R1 with 32K+ miles. Also changed over to 525 sprockets / chain from 2014^ R1 (fits right on).

      @@trentderzerstorer1838 oh so it wasn't all your doing! I only have 6k mi on my 99 R1 and I baby my shifts bro.. I know the job to fix it and I don't plan on ever having to.
