I remember the EL tracks being in place in crown point about mid 1980s i remember crossing the 93rd ave wooden bridge and having a train go by and shaking the heck out of that old bridge it was bad enough that it was a single lane but the train going under it was worse

Crazy to think that they legit MOVED that tower to right next to the E J & E caboose.

The EL was operated by the Erie Western short line from 1977 to 1979. Then in 1979 it was operated by successor Chicago & Indiana RR until December 31, 1979. I am not sure when the EL was ripped up north to State Line Jct. Do you know when the last train ran on the C&O?

@ma7799 I don't know when the C&O stopped running on their line, but the last time I remember a train being run on that track was 1981 or 1982. While I never passed over Broad Street, I always passed over the track on Hendricks or Taft Street in Merrillville on my way to school. As for Erie Western, I didn't even know they existed. I need to make a correction that Conrail didn't acquire the Erie line in 1976. Rumor has it that the rest of the old C&O will be ripped up in the near future.

Actually, the EL tracks were abandoned in 1976 after Conrail decided to acquire the line, and the tracks (at least south of Broad Street) were ripped out in 1981 past the C&O tracks. You're right that the NYC track was abandoned in 1976 (that line also wasn't acquired by Conrail) and most of it between Schererville & Lake Station ripped up in 1978. The C&O track several yards east of Arbogast Street was ripped up in 1985
