I had just watched it only focusing on the story. Not just how innovative it is or anything like that. Be aware the film is better appreciated knowing little about it. What I found is a captivating film of a man with a childhood where he was never given the love he needed or how to give it back (at least very heavily implied), becoming focused on trying to make himself happy and basically abandoned those around him in some way. He bought tons of statues and built a palace to make himself happy, only for it to bring him nothing of the sort. Cold, alone, and now broken. There was nothing left, but Rosebud. The one thing that maybe could bring him back to a simpler time. When it's revealed what is was. I felt it all come crashing down. So yeah, I loved it. One the most important films in cinema? Yes. Holds up extremely well? Yes. Greatest film of all time. No. That title is a curse. If one goes into the film expecting that, it will completely disappoint.
It's cinematically innovative. That's why cinema historians place it so high. But I can say, there are many films out there that have moved me much, much more.
There are two things at work here when considering the question of this movie's "greatness"; one is the art of cinematography in all its aspects, and the other is subjective appreciation, which for most of us = entertainment. I have seen _Citizen Kane_ several times and frankly have never been particularly impressed with it. For me the entire issue is one of story and the way that story is presented. Now I admit there is a story here which evokes thought and careful consideration as well as to some extent interpretation, but there are hundreds of movies which could challenge _Citizen Kane_ in this regard. Then there is the issue of cinematic innovations such as Wells' use of forced perspective, lighting and other visual acrobatics, but many other movies such as _Abyss_ have also raised the bar in this respect though this has not garnered them the title of "Greatest". SO in the end, for most of us, it all comes down to personal appreciation. For me, the greatest movie I have ever seen is the most _entertaining_ movie I have ever seen - _The Red Violin_ - though few would consider it great. [EDIT] _The Red Violin_ happens to be currently available on You Tube for free if anyone is interested in seeing it.
I admire Citizen Kane, but I'm not involved much with the character. It is the way the story is presented and cinematic innovations that make it the greatest. For those who care, the French think Charles Laughton's only directed film, The Night of the Hunter, is the 2nd greatest film in history. That one is far more emotionally involving and beautiful. I'd put it above Citizen Kane. Thanks for pointing out the Red Violin. I'll watch it.
It's greatness I believed stems on how much it set a gold standard for Hollywood films to come along with it, the foundation it laid out was now used by others to create the movies we know today.
Have you seen it? It's pretty dang great. Seriously, go check it out. Even if you disagree if it's *better* than Citizen Kane, you need to recognize that it's a newer movie benefiting from a long history of cinema techniques. Newer stuff is sometimes better just because it's benefiting from more modern technology and experience.
I think that calling a movie the greatest because it is innovative is problematic. Often the first to do something isn’t technically the best. Later movies have refined and added to those techniques,. There are later movies that in my view that use those techniques better, plus some of those movies, again in my view, have better acting, musical scores and would even suggest better scripts. However, I will watch it again soon to look for those techniques
Technology has ruined everything. Comparing a CG bear to a work such as this. I remember when Pixar made Toy Story. Fully computer generated characters, with voice actors. We need real people, interacting. Kids now days watch poison videos with catchy tunes because their parents aren't ready to be parents so they throw a phone or a tablet at them. You've got Blippi raising your kids, didn't we learn our lesson with Pee-wee Herman. The smartphone was the activating event and social media is plain evil. Though it is technically social media, I like TH-cam its different. Its great for learning just about anything. People were not meant to live online, early 2000's fbook was for high school and college kids to basically connect and or get laid. Look what it metastasized into, digital cancer. Now we have the woke mind virus, my mother read me the Paddington Bear books.. We need to get back to that. This is Screen Rant, so this is my rant now its done. Good luck out there.
Now I got it..it's considered great because It was novel and innovative at the time No one made something like that before But seriously as of today it doesn't holds up to its title.. unlike Shawshank redemption or Godfather which still are capable of holding the GOAT title
I would also agree that Citizen Kane is groundbreaking, and probably the most IMPORTANT movie of all time but certainly not the GOAT. Saying it is, is like saying the Model T ford is the greatest car of all time.
No one can define what the greatest movie of all time is because it's a matter of opinion, and always relative. Every video I find explaining why Citizen Kane is the best movie of all time just seems to keep using cinematography as the reason. I'm def not gonna say Citizen Kane is the greatest movie because it's not even relatable to most ppl. Its just about rich white men corrupt in power, we already see that everyday and are tired of it. I would say something like It's a Wonderful Life would fit that title more, but again it's all opinions. My favorite movie growing up was always Titanic! 💗
@@Tolstoy111 again, that does not define it as best movie of all time. Michael Jackson had prob the most influence on modern day music artists, I would consider him the greatest entertainer of all time. But then you'll have other ppl like the "Beehive" or "Swifties" 🙄 who would say otherwise. Citizen Kane still has not been seen by A LOT of ppl and is still very little relatable to most ppl, so a few bunch cannot define that movie as the greatest film of all time on everyone else's behalf. It's all relative to ppls opinion. Nuff said.

This movie was ground breaking in cinematics for it's time.

An idiosyncratic take if ever there was one.

How does Paddington two beat a film like this?
Lmao

Citizen Kane is Indeed the GOAT. It's just impossible to describe it's calibre to the current generation.
Some told me it's B&W and "boring" ! No gun battles etc...
@@TennesseeHomesteadUSAThey must be pretty dumb.

Look at the technical aspects -- the photography by Gregg Toland with deep focus etc.
“If Doom was the game equivalent of Micheal Jackson’s Thriller then Half Life was the game equivalent of Citizen Kane”
This quote brought me here.

Citizen Kane isn't even Welles' best. The Trial and Chimes At Midnight are 10000000x better
Spot on!
Because it probably is.
@balorama. This is so fucking wrong.
Morbius >>> citizen krap
I watched Paddington 2 out of curiosity. But come on! This is real pure populism. Cute movie, well made, positive, but come on.
Lol, ok, I'll never take Rotten Tomatoes seriously ever again
Rotten Tomatoes gave a 100 to The Woman King, its literally worthless

Paddington 2! Don't make me laugh.

It’s not just opinion. CK was a massive influence on other films. And not just the cinematography.

Paddington 2 the greatest? Not by this viewer.
