What a showman... He makes it look effortless! Such poise. And I love this song, because of this exact scene. I wish I could find a (video) recording of the entire show (Black & Blue).
I will always feel blessed to have seen this live. It remains the only piece of theater, art or music that destroys me into tears every single time I see it or even think about it, even though it's not necessarily sad. And I can't explain it. I guess it's because Bunny Briggs was clearly possessed by Ellington's music here and it explodes into his dance. I had never seen dance like this before - where the expression comes through the pauses, and the seemingly incongruous music and dance combinations - except it's not incongruous at all. It's miraculous. Thank you for posting.
I got to see Black and Blue on Broadway, a long time ago...Bunny is one of my favorite tap dancers, inimitable. Love what you say about how he is in the music. To me he’s in a dialogue with it, very intimate. So glad to see this!
Master of this art.
