Oxcroft Colliery Disused Railway Walk & Explore.
This time i visit the site of the former Oxcroft Coal Disposal Point, and follow the disused railway line all the way to Seymour Junction near Stavely, in Chesterfield.
Eventually meeting up with the Seymour to Clowne & Creswell line, i follow it onwards to our destination of Seymour Junction

The concrete narrow foundation was for the tare and loaded weighbridge when a train entered the oxcroft disposal site

I used to work in the weighbridge at the disposal point in the late 80s early 90s, happy memories !
That was the weighbridge then at the start that had collapsed i guess :)

Fascinating stuff didnt realise there was so many collieries round ur neck of the woods....some great stills again including the dmu,s cant work out why they would have been there ..but great stuff Ant......Frank & Lee.....
Was here filming a video yesterday. (Seymour bit only as part of Staveley to Clowne/Creswell line). Nice to see the Oxcroft branch getting this much attention

Another gem for me as I was a regular up and down the M1 in the 80s and 90s and would often see trains on the Oxcroft branch as I passed. As with so much its sad to see it all closed. I know its not fashionable these days to say it but I really miss the industry and pits , happy days for me.
I use to take coal into the site at oxcroft from the open cast at orgreave near cat cliff and it was a very busy line in the day .the concrete pad at the end befor the m1 was a weigh bridge and cabin
I'd have loved to see the Seymour Junction area say 20 - 30 years ago it must have been a real hub of activity at times. Such ashame they didnt hold on to the route to Creswell & Chesterfield for passenger services. Thanks for watching :)

Another enjoyable video (accompanied by the recommended cup of tea). The hole in the roof of the air raid shelter is for the emergency escape hatch, another way out should the main entrance be blocked by blast rubble.
It's all very complicated but I loved every minute.
It's such a vast former network of railways over that area and still much more to do 🙂
Your walk was just a load of ballast! Good video : brings back memories of when I lived in Creswell in the 1970s and used to cycle around the area when there was much less traffic on the roads.

This was a lovely little route and an interesting part of what was once an extensive area. I've enjoyed learning about it all
I just love the solitude on that walk and the history that goes along with it, some great bridges too. That old bunker was a very decent find, plus @ 26.15 it looks like Thor might have left his hammer behind!!
Considering how short it is, the old line still had a lot to offer. Those pair of old bridge's past the M1 were lovely. I'll have a look for Thor's hammer 🤣

Good video mate, I enjoyed watching it. A line I've walked many times. Glad you went to the former coal disposal site on a day when the dirt bikes weren't there. I think the Xmas tree has been there for a few years now. I'd be gutted if it ever got taken away! And I've spent plenty of time exploring Seymour and had no idea about the shelter! Appreciated the drone footage too. The Clowne branch line greenway has been quieter since lockdown was eased.

The shelter is between where the line splits one way to Bolsover and the other way to Oxcroft junction

Just within the past few weeks (March 2021), the Oxcroft Colliery Sidings have had a lot of remedial earthwork starting, from what I can see it was where coal physically laid rather than the actual rail area. Looking at local planning documents, it’s still owned by UK Coal and is simply to put the quality of the ground right again. Fantastic footage and history as always, thank you, now going to make a small donation and suggestion 😊

Funny how the artists favour the cute bridge rather than the brutal modern M1 version. Great photos. Not so keen on the cast sleepers, wooden ones a lot better!!! Must pay more attention when dragging up the M1, so much you just don't realise is there. Thanks Ant 👍👍👍

Although the route is not cast in stone, the trackbed, I believe, is reserved from where the M1 crosses the Clowne Branch then Oxcroft Jn - Seymour Jn - Hall Lane Jn for HS2 (Staveley Maintenance Depot Branch).
I walked from Seymour Jn - Clowne and also Clowne - Cresswell in two trips a fortnight ago - Thursday and Sunday pm - and it was semi-quiet although popular with dog walkers and cyclists. You can also walk some of the LD&EC Beighton Branch between Cresswell & Clowne, although part is 'fenced off' on the Cresswell side of the former Markland Grips Viaduct so you may need to divert round - taken out of use over 50 years ago, so a trackbed and not a lot else...
Was going to also mention the former GC mainline is available to walk, on the the other side of Poolsbrook County Park in both directions (a) towards Killamarsh - but you beat me too it, and (b) as far as Arkwright. On the approach to Arkwight, you can still see earthworks and some structures associated with former Duckmanton Jns.
The direction of Arkwright is definitely of interest, would be nice to find the tunnel location, station and give the old village a mention too. I'll have to look at that bit of the Beighton, as I've already done the killamarsh to Spinkhill section 😀

Yes the air raid shelter😀 I remembered I've been onto a place that looked like a colliery had a big open area and few ruined buildings its not bolsover colite and not the other one on the way I've been there and now its gone sadly I'll have to have a look again when I find it I'll email you Ant if that's ok😀

Iam always stunned by the amount unused Land in North or Midlands left empty as UK moved from Coal and Manufactoring to a service based economy really the main dereliction down south in London is Docklands admittedly a huge area of dereliction but about 60% have redeveloped but some old docks and wharves remain derelict but a new city has arisen in Docklands.
If you are ever down in London take Docklands Light Railway and take cable car. as well of the huge internal dock railway and other lines many have been reused for DLR or Overground or Crossrail .. as empty land is few and far between in London..
When I first started watching this I thought you were also going to show us Oxcroft pit albeit where the shafts were if they could be found.
That shelter was a great find.

What an informative film. I love seeing the pictures with the Class 56’s etc and didn’t realise there used to be a line under the M1. One of the pictures shows a DMU at the colliery, was this a special excursion the photographer was on?
I think it was you know. I saw it on a couple of other images in different locations along the route. Those days must have been brilliant all these branchine railtours.

I read somewhere that DMU was bringing staff to and from the processing plant.
Somewhere new to go exploring with my boys. We walk the clown branch line a lot and I ride it down to poolsbrook right through to rother valley quite often. I grew up In Bolsover and we used to be able to crush pennies and watch the old coal trucks turning around on the line down carr vale. Have you ever visited the tunnel in the canyon at Bolsover thats at the side of the tarmac estate. We used to love playing down there and would have loved to have known where that tunnel goes to.
The tunnel goes to Scarcliffe but it's in a poor state now. Was filled in many years ago after a collapse and much subsidence caused by mining that meant the tunnel had to have ongoing repairs while open. I've seen some recent photos on Facebook of what it's like inside now, looks very dangerous and deformed.

I live about a 2 minute walk from the oxcroft colliery, they've just started to do a load of work to it, lots of earth has been moved but not sure whats going on

quite complex the Oxcroft mine, also mention of opencast at some time and then the conveyor system, i found this wiki information en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Railway_Clowne_Branch though makes a complex mining/rail/conveyor/bunker etc set up seem even more complicated, seems some of that old stretch of line is for HS2!

@@TrekkingExploration hey up, i dont know what lengths you are prepared to go to explore new places, if your prepared to go the extra mile. The scarcliffe end cutting of the bolsover tunnel is a challenge to behold, just to reach the portal which is still there has only been achived by one other pair in 2010.
@@davidedwards4707 is this inside the end that's buried, as opposed to the bricked end with the open circular section?
Went there today, Oxcroft CDP is flattened and reclamation work has started

@@TrekkingExploration apparently the whole section from Foxlow junction through Hall lane junction through Seymour junction into Oxcroft is still Mothballed as there still remains the possibility for Opencasting in the area
I remember as a child going for walks around Clowne to a place that I’m sure we called ‘the grips’ or something like that. Does this mean anything to anyone/where it is or is that just a name we used 😂

It has part of the track bed of the former Great Central Railway in it and a bridge over the track bed at one end.
