If you want to organize your threads a little better, here's what I do: I take scrap squares of cardboard or heavy weight paperboard, cut two slits on opposite sides of the square, tuck one end into a slit, wrap the thread around it (around the not-cut sides) until it's all wound up, and then tuck the other end into the opposite slit. This keeps the thread from getting tangled up, and it's super easy to stack them and arrange them by color in a container. I have a little three-drawer holder for all my sewing stuff, and they sit upright so I can easily find whatever color I need, and I can arrange them by color in a pleasing little rainbow.
The only downside is it can cause slight kinks in your thread, but if you stretch them out and relax them a little before use and don't wind them super tight, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
And thank you for the paper and binding recommendation! I love them both!

you can buy pre-made cards like this in the cross stitch section (at least in Australia). www.spotlightstores.com/sewing-fabrics/haberdashery/needles/birch-50-piece-plastic-floss-bobbins/BP80126693
      same idea but less DIY!

I am also a bookmaker and I love this technique which is new to me. Thank you very much for this extremely well done instruction. I just finished making 7 books made in the shape of a paper doll, and completed with stamping (hand carved stamps), gelli printing, drawing, writing, and collage using hand made paper and more gelli prints, etc. for an upcoming juried show here. As soon as I recover I am planning to make this book. It is lovely.

A beautiful idea!!! I will also say here that I did your scallop shell water color book and gave it to a friend. It was great fun. I have five more I want to make. Thank you for the book binding ideas!!! I enjoy watching your videos and tutorials. I appreciate you and your art.

Thank you so much! I have learned so much watching your tutorials. I'm putting to use what I'm learning.
I've made 2 books from this one video.
I'm getting old and it's nice to see I can still learn something new and can make it actually turn out ok.
I watch a lot of videos and am always wanting to learn new things.
    You make it very understandable.
    Thanks again.

really into the chain stitch, and i think you chose beautiful papers and patterns that compliment one another so it's not too busy/ the journal is truly one of a kind. great job !

  • @RachelStormborn
    @RachelStormborn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

I've done this using multiple stacks of signatures and lines of chain-stitching within a single cover making a fairly thick book that way. It looks nice when using a different color paper and matching thread per signature to make a rainbow effect.
I was just thinking about you and your dad last night then saw this video listed today. I hope all is well.

So I didn't have any book repair tape, but I tried an alternative and it seems to be working! Use heat n bond ultra hold, like you're making book cloth, but don't iron paper onto the back side. Iron it directly onto the front and back, and wrap around and iron it onto itself like the tape sticks to itself. It takes being careful and some creative iron usage to get it to look nice, but it seems to work for me so far!

This bookbinding method looks like it would also work to create hardcovers for paperback books that need some reviving. Just glue the old cover to the inside of the new cover. Thanks for all your videos, because of them I was able to create custom notebooks and sketchbooks for my friends and myself. I will have to try this technique in the near future.

    Hey Sea Lemon!
I've recently gotten into bookbinding and your videos and I'm absolutely loving them. I was just wondering if it would be possible if you could do a video with European sized papers, or add in alternative sizes like using a4 paper? It's super hard for me to calculate my own sizes, but it's really difficult to get letter sized paper over here and importing from the US is getting quite expensive just for a hobby haha. Thank you so much for your videos!
