I've actually legitimately been told to leave businesses, pools etc. Sometimes by employees, other times by fellow humans just enjoying their day like I was trying to do. We still are treated as if we're something disgusting and unsightly. Just the other day I had a kid get out of an elevator, see my deformity and loudly exclaim "what the heck is that thing momma?" And instead of scolding and or using the opportunity to teach her child about differences or even getting her to apologize the woman just look at me and said something like "i dunno baby, but lets not stay and find out." It sucks to exist sometimes as someone different than societal norms. It truly does.
The way some of them looked at it was like this, people were going to gawk at them and stare at them no matter what, so at the very least, they wanted to control who could gawk at them, and when, and for how much $ for most of them it would be the only way they could make a decent living.
Daisy and Violet struggled later in life. Having no education, they blew through their money and performed at drive-ins, often arguing with each other. Eventually, they had to get jobs at a grocery store, barely making ends meet.
So back then,if you were disabled All the job options you could have was only humiliating yourself That is extremely disturbing, I'm glad these freak shows are mostly gone now,and hopefully never returned

I think the human zoo’s were worse in their exploitation but that’s not to take away from how bad the freak shows were. These people were treated horribly, but many of the human zoo people were forced to live in enclosures with the wild animals from their homeland. People today are no different tho. We still exploit others for entertainment. If human rights laws didn’t prevent it, these freak shows would still exist today, in all their glory.

If you ever plan on doing part 2 of this freakshow video I highly recommend the story of Sarah Baartman. She was an indigenous Khoi woman from South Africa whose body was exploited in these freakshows. Just to summarize her story, she was taken from her homeland in South Africa, where the British found interest in her bodily features, they saw it as "exotic" and unordinary. Her body would be oversexualized by the public at these freakshows, and sadly she experienced extreme exploitation because of her body, which ultimately resulted in her passing. Her remains were then used for the sake of science/research and displayed in French museums. It was only years later that her remains were returned to her homeland in South Africa. Just a really sad story and really proves how inhumane these freakshows were.

I have been pressured to leave pools by other people because they "didn't want to catch polio" and countless other ignorant comments. I have to continously deal with people asking questions constantly, etc. I don't mind the questions too much, because how else will they learn? But it does get very exhausting teaching little kids about disabilities for the 50th time while just trying to get food at the store. We have made huge strides, but until people are taught differences exist and happen and to just let people live and leave them alone, we have a long, LONG way to go.
These shows were a mix of racism and mockery on disabled people. That's horrible inhumane and very sad. People nowadays -include myself- will never know/understand how much discriminations these poor people went through, I mean disability or being black/arabian.... is way more accepted today than it were during the 19th century. These people only had place in freaks shows and couldn't access other jobs. I'm disabled and black myself and with no doubt I had so much chances than these people at the time: education, medical caring.....
