Nice video. Honestly, most of it is already pretty obvious to me, but I'm pretty entrenched in the fandom and have spent a lot more time among LN/anime than most typical casual fans. I'd be curious what videos you have in the pipeline if you're up to sharing that. Good luck regardless though. (And to answer the question, my favorite LN adaptation is Rokka no Yuusha, which is basically fantasy among us, telling a mystery of a traitor in a group of chosen heroes. It was paced to adapt only one volume in one season, but in exchange, it didn't feel as rushed as many other works.)
@@elitealice never seen orphen but i just looked it up and its by jc staff, and honestly ngl they do have a track record sometimes of messing up Ln adaptations hard, DAL s3, shana, index whenever i see them as the studio i get nervous
One of the examples of a "maladaption" would be High School DxD. The way they handled the battle against Loki, they ruined the set-up for two thirds of the actual plot of the series, so the author of the Light Novels had to write an extra volume involving time travel of all things to fix the screw-up the animation studio accidentally caused.
"It's been a long time, Handler One" Easily one of my most favorite scenes from any anime. I can't fanboy over Eighty Six and it's writing and animation enough
I disagree about the animation, especially the combat scenes. They are technically very good, but I cannot stand the direction. You cannot tell what is going on in the fights. They almost all consist of a bunch of jump cuts between a juggernaut scuttling, a legion vehicle scuttling, a juggernaut shooting, and then something exploding.
@@thorinpalladino2826 I personally enjoyed the direction of the combat scenes, they never focused solely on one juggernaut, instead opting to show multiple angles and perspectives of the multiple pilots. I do suppose they could've had a bit more focus on individuals for their respective fights, but I didn't personally find it all that hard to keep track of. I still respect your opinion regardless, everyone has different taste after all
For me, two light novel to anime adaptions that I thought were BETTER than the source material were: Toradora and Rascal Does not Dream. Rascal Does not Dream is an interesting one in particular as the novels are within the best books I've ever read, yet the show and movies, with their cinematography, animation and soundtrack, manage to somehow be even better than the already stellar novels they're based upon, despite leaving out some parts.
@@cattymations haven’t read Aobuta, loved the anime though so I can see that. Toradora I notoriously hate as a story because of Taiga lol, but comparing scores it seems like that’s a common opinion. Interesting!

its either that, or making an adaptation is a much more risk-free production than an anime original becuase of an established audience. But all adaptations are usually one or the other. Rares cases like mushoku and studio bind could be argued that it is an actual passion project from the staff.
Obviously not if the manga is already finished, like the latest anime adaptations of Fruits Basket and Shaman King which came out years after their source material ended.

As a big 86 fan, truly happy that it got an adaptation that went above and beyond, 86 pt 1 had some of the best CGI I've ever seen in anime. Same with Violet Evergarden loved the LN and KyoAni turned it into an instant classic. I agree with a lot of the points here. I do wish some adaptations would be better even with the understanding that they are there mostly to promote the light novels. Some light novel adaptations into anime do an amazing job and go above and beyond like 86 for example.
My favorite is LN adaptation is Rascal Does not Dream series. Hopefully the university arc is a TV series. Oregairu is fun but let's just say some people in the production have more say that made it a little bit frustrating. lol

Sao i kept up with all the arcs and well Unital Ring has not been adapted yet. 26 Books finished here and 8 of Progressive too and well the Moon Cradle books got adapted by a mobile phone game with some Alicization 1st half scenes and the 2nd half of Progressive volume 1 Rondo of a fragile blade. I saw those 2 Progressive books adaptations Scherzo of deep night and Aria on a starless night they're good films but i didn't like this Mito replacing Nezha, Hafner and Okotan in the Scherzo adaptation and the change of Black Poncho man/Poh ambushing Asuna in the Scherzo film when in the book he actually ambushed Kirito on his way to buy drinks from a cafe for himself and Asuna in Aincrad down the catacombs leaving Kirito to become anxious about Asuna's safety leading to him to find Asuna completely unharmed and ignored by the Poh/Black Poncho man relieving him of his anxiety for Asuna. Season 3 Alicization adaptation ars 4 cores 2 twelves with the 1st half and 1 twelfth and 1 eleventh with the war of underworld 2nd half. Season 2 adaptations are Phantom Bullet, Mother's Rosario and Calibur and Season 1 adaptations are Aincrad and Fairy and the murder case in the area.
I actually didn't mind the addition of Mito in the Progressive films because they used her as a mentor for Asuna instead of having Asuna suddenly becoming a badass within a month despite never fought anything irl or playing a video game. I think that the PoH scene in the Scherzo movie was just there to connect that 1 scene in WoU where PoH sees Asuna & the gang in the Underworld.
I actually wish Accel World caught on more than SAO. They're written in parallel and by the same author, but there seems to be more emotional depth in the former work and it shows in the anime adaptations when comparing their first seasons.
@@elitealice In case you are curious about it, the first Accel World novel actually came out a few months before the first SAO novel. The settings are very similar, but the MC and heroine are pretty different. The MC is a short and chubby teenage boy, and his avatar in the virtual world isn't one chosen by him, but by the game system as a personification of their childhood traumas. Trauma and coping with it are major themes of the story. Whereas SAO starts with a death game and how the players cope with that situation, Accel World has lower stakes but is still pretty compelling.
"An anime should be able to stand on it's own" - 100% And the "not enough budget" excuse can honestly only fly so far when you consider that there are shows like Gintama, or most of the Gundams, who don't exactly rely on a large budget yet deliver - albeit it should be noted that it's decent enough to deliver on the mech fights, etc. But heck, Gintama can make a literal filler ep entertaining.

I hope Sword Art Online gets a full reboot light novel adaptation that’s completely faithful to novels without cut content and get a lot people to like it and think it’s good
The problem with adapting SAO, as for me, is that at some point the narrative becomes very ragged and more of separate stories. But in defense, there wasn’t much content either. The director adapted everything he could to the maximum. Another question is why it was impossible to add something on our own to improve adaptation; this is probably a question of the budget. However, I still think that the first 14 episodes of SAO season 1 came out just great in my opinion.
I would like to ask a novel. The name of this novel is Ulysses: Jeanne d'Arc and the Alchemist Knight(ユリシーズ ジャンヌ・ダルクと錬金の騎士) All six volumes of this novel are finished. I would like to ask about the ending of this novel. If anyone knows the ending of this novel, can you tell me? Is the ending a good or a bad ending? There are very cute goblins killed in front of this novel. I feel so sad to see this 😭😭😭😭😭 So I want to know if these goblins have been resurrected in the final ending? Are there any other goblins coming out? Please tell me!
the youjo senki light novel and anime are so different that i barely even recognized where the light novel was in the anime when i listened to it. there is just so much inner monologue from tanya that the anime would basically have to dedicate entire episodes of tanya just talking to her self just to be faithful to the light novel. overlord anime also skips a lot from the light novel, its a shame really, since the light novel ads a lot more detail to the world and characters than the anime do.
They also went out of order iirc like doesn’t the movie take place before the end of s2 or something to that effect. It’s been a long time since I read
@@elitealice the movie covers volume 7 or something. Literally skipped 4 or 5 volumes, it didn't make sense. I hope season 2 cover the war against the new republic or what its called (its a few years since i listened to them). That part was kind of fun.
It's actually quite ironic & sad with the adaptations that A-1 has done over the years. SAO might be their messiest one (from the pacing & how much they cut to the point where they were cutting out major scenes of Asuna & Kirisuna), but they can nail 86 & (atm) Solo Leveling nearly perfectly. In SAO's defense, A-1 adapted the best that they could when the LN was new, Progressive wasn't a thing yet, & Reki's writing wasn't at its peak yet, but I still think the Alicization anime is disrespectful. They get a director who didn't know much about SAO to do Alicization & they cut out a lot of major scenes with Asuna & Kirisuna. Season 1 was good, but Alicization was really bad considering how it was kind of taking 1 of the essences away that is part of SAO's plot.
Alicization was amazing you’re tripping. WoU was a somewhat bad adaptation, but the first half of Alicization was immaculate. That being the first 24 episodes of the arc up until the Quinella fight. Plus as the resident Asuna hater, not having those scenes didn’t impact me at all.
I agree with @Samsapopin As someone who has read the novels, Season 1 anime was better than the novels, Season 2 anime traded blows with the novels, Alicization anime was meh, War of Underworld anime was disrespectful, and Progressive anime is spin off at best. For some reasons, people behind the anime have major problems with Asuna and that goes beyond the director. Not only they cut so many of her moments in WoU, but they completely changed Asuna's backstory to make her dependent on yet another purple-haired girl. That's disgusting.
@@elitealice No. 1. The characters are not how they're portrayed in the anime: a. In Alicization beginning, Kirito was taking advantage of Eugeo, not innocently helping him like how it's portrayed in the anime. Kirito went as far as interrupting Eugeo's new calling.(P. 263 "my plan would be completely ruined") (P.264 "I began to wonder if I should rush the stage, put an arm around his shoulders, and announce that we were off to see the big city") b. Asuna doesn't worship "Kirito-kun" like in the anime. She goes as far as mocking Kirito's dual wield (P. 101) 2. The world building is so much worse in the novels. Where is the Night Sky Sword's backstory? Do you even know what the Giga Cedar was feeling? Where's the complete version of the Blue Rose Sword's backstory? Did you know the snow's tears made this sword? 3. The novels' artstyle is much better than the anime 4. There are many figurative speeches in the novels that didn't translate well to the anime. They could've done much better than what they did.
@hahr I actually prefer the addition of Mito in Progressive films than the original anime/LN. It's better to have her being a mentor to Asuna & have her being Asuna's reason of joining SAO than having Asuna going into SAO without any gaming & fighting experiences, but she somehow knew basically everything within a month. People would've called her a "Rey Skywalker" if the films showed the latter. As for the Alicization saga, 1st half bored me & then lost my respect when Eugeo & Quinella died, but I thought WoU was average despite them disregarding Asuna & Kiriasu. Tbf, all of that crap was the director's fault, not knowing much about SAO when he did Alicization. It's also 1 of the reasons why I'm excited for when the SAO audiobooks get to Vol. 16-18 next year. They're going to sound better than the anime when Bryce & Cherami narrating them.
I'd like to see "Qualia the Purple" (I've read both the light novel and the manga) and "Kieli" (I've read only the manga) receive anime adaptations. And maybe even "9S: The Security System that Seals the Savage Science Smartly by its Supreme Sagacity and Strength". (As of this comment's posting date, I'm at the tail end of volume 3 (out of 13 published volumes), so I'm still not sure about this one. However, I've found Tohru Hayama's old sci-fi series to be thrilling the more I read it, so I kind of want it to receive an anime adaptation).
@@elitealice I discovered "Qualia the Purple" while searching up stuff related to the "Jinki" series (the author of the "Jinki" series is the illustrator for "Qualia the Purple"). Meanwhile, I discovered "Kieli" and "9S" through a game that featured them (along with other Dengeki Bunko light novels). "Qualia the Purple" and "Kieli" both have official English translations. However, "9S" doesn't, and I've been reading its Chinese translation through a CTE tranlsator. It's not the best way to read it (takes a lot name-finding and a bit of skimming), but it does work. ("9S" is well-received in the East, but is virtually unheard of in the West).
Classroom of the elite really deserves a remake by a studio that cares I mean bruh look at s2 so many outsourced eps and cut content and ayanokouji inner monologue is just completely non existence they did pretty good on the ryuen vs koji fight but if only every ep was adapted like that not calling the anime bad I’m myself actullay enjoy the anime for what it offers etc. but man what this series could be the potential it has is crazy if it was adapted like 86 I mean sheesh studio lerche could make a goated anime example lookn at there other works such Assassination Classroom beatifully done
@elitealice As someone who has read the novels,Season 1 anime adaptation is better than the novels. Why? - they rearrange Aincrad to make it in chronological order - The artstyle looks better than what abec used to draw for Aincrad and Fairy Dance (abec is amazing right now. I'm talking only about the first four novels) - the anime replaced Suguha's awful monologues about how much she "loves" Kirito with Kirito's love for Asuna (e.g., when fighting the guardians in the World Tree. Kirito remembers her moments with Asuna) People tend to blame the anime for omitting the monologues. The monologues -as much as people say- don't really add up anything in the first four novels. Kirito didn't really have too much of characterization back in the first four novels. He's got much better in Alicization and Progressive The anime is 99% faithful to the novels (unlike what we see in Alicization and especially Progressive) Also, the soundtrack is amazing and most of the composed songs were actually used (unlike WoU where many of the most beautiful songs were omitted)
Saga of Tanya the Evil adaptation was lacking so much it was a bit sad to see. She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man, I don't know what they wanted to do with anime but it couldn't be further from the LN as far as the atmosphere goes. Ascendance of a Bookworm, it wasn't bad but not good either, really it was nothing fancy and not interesting, so there was nothing that attracts ppl to it like the LN. Tearmoon Empire is coming soon and from the PV it might make me cry. really, good adaptation only comes once in while and the rest is trash
Nah I gotta stop you there. Respect honzuki adaptation. It was really good. Yea they cut out some details but it’s a monologue and exposition heavy series so that’s to be expected. Seasons II and III are phenomenal and rightfully rated very highly on MAL(both over 8). Youjo senki again is another very dialogue and monologue heavy series so it’s also going to have a lot cut because it’s coming from a book to an anime form. They’re different mediums. They did adapt things out of order though so I will concede that one. Pupil I’ve never seen. Tearmoon is in my plan to read but haven’t read yet to comment. Everyone on r/lightnovels gasses it tho.
Here are my problems with Light Novel Anime adaptations: - usually it goes with 13 episodes formula for one season, - lacks continuation of the story in a form of season 2/3 - too much isekai/harem/op protagonist formula, - there are making too much Light Novel Anime adaptation. - it's hard to get orginal SourceMaterial in a form of light novel. - rushes the plot I don't dislike all of the Light Novel Anime adaptations. Some of them were pretty interesting like Re Zero, or one mecha light novel from 2006 that was able to adapt it's entire story from the source material in just 13 episodes.
I disagree with you about 86 being a good adaptation. One of the big things missing from the anime is stakes. We never get the stats of the vehicles so we never truly understand how overmatched the 86 really are. Another issue is the fights. While they are well animated there is no sense of what is going on beyond that there is a fight. The fancy maneuvering and tactics that allow the 86 to prevail over superior opponents are just lost.

I agree with @Samsapopin
As someone who has read the novels, Season 1 anime was better than the novels, Season 2 anime traded blows with the novels, Alicization anime was meh, War of Underworld anime was disrespectful, and Progressive anime is spin off at best. For some reasons, people behind the anime have major problems with Asuna and that goes beyond the director. Not only they cut so many of her moments in WoU, but they completely changed Asuna's backstory to make her dependent on yet another purple-haired girl. That's disgusting.
@@hamedshahr “Alicization was meh” LMAOOOO. It was a stellar adaptation literally 1:1 and even enhanced in the anime most of the time, but ight
@@elitealice No.
1. The characters are not how they're portrayed in the anime:
a. In Alicization beginning, Kirito was taking advantage of Eugeo, not innocently helping him like how it's portrayed in the anime. Kirito went as far as interrupting Eugeo's new calling.(P. 263 "my plan would be completely ruined") (P.264 "I began to wonder if I should rush the stage, put an arm around his shoulders, and announce that we were off to see the big city")
b. Asuna doesn't worship "Kirito-kun" like in the anime. She goes as far as mocking Kirito's dual wield (P. 101)
2. The world building is so much worse in the novels. Where is the Night Sky Sword's backstory? Do you even know what the Giga Cedar was feeling? Where's the complete version of the Blue Rose Sword's backstory? Did you know the snow's tears made this sword?
3. The novels' artstyle is much better than the anime
You just told me about some series I’ve never heard of. Those look interesting
Very good video! I agree with what you said :)
superb video
Love the LN content 👍
Classroom of the elite really deserves a remake by a studio that cares I mean bruh look at s2 so many outsourced eps and cut content and ayanokouji inner monologue is just completely non existence they did pretty good on the ryuen vs koji fight but if only every ep was adapted like that not calling the anime bad I’m myself actullay enjoy the anime for what it offers etc. but man what this series could be the potential it has is crazy if it was adapted like 86 I mean sheesh studio lerche could make a goated anime example lookn at there other works such
Assassination Classroom beatifully done
Lerche is not the one to blame for the poor adaptation.

L'erche is a good studio but kadokawa doesn't care
i would say sao is decent s1 and s2 i did not finnish s3 but i wish they stayed in sao a bit longer
S3, Alicization is literally the best arc lol and the reason for my name. S1 is an awful adaptation. S2 is weak even as a LN
@@elitealice I never read the light novels so your opinion are more valid than mine
@elitealice As someone who has read the novels,Season 1 anime adaptation is better than the novels. Why?
- they rearrange Aincrad to make it in chronological order
- The artstyle looks better than what abec used to draw for Aincrad and Fairy Dance (abec is amazing right now. I'm talking only about the first four novels)
- the anime replaced Suguha's awful monologues about how much she "loves" Kirito with Kirito's love for Asuna (e.g., when fighting the guardians in the World Tree. Kirito remembers her moments with Asuna)
People tend to blame the anime for omitting the monologues. The monologues -as much as people say- don't really add up anything in the first four novels. Kirito didn't really have too much of characterization back in the first four novels. He's got much better in Alicization and Progressive
The anime is 99% faithful to the novels (unlike what we see in Alicization and especially Progressive)
Also, the soundtrack is amazing and most of the composed songs were actually used (unlike WoU where many of the most beautiful songs were omitted)
Everyone on r/lightnovels gasses it tho.
how do you only have 954 subs?
Ngl I ask myself that a lot. Probably because I took a few months off in spring
Nice video
Here are my problems with Light Novel Anime adaptations:
- usually it goes with 13 episodes formula for one season,
- lacks continuation of the story in a form of season 2/3
- too much isekai/harem/op protagonist formula,
- there are making too much Light Novel Anime adaptation.
- it's hard to get orginal SourceMaterial in a form of light novel.
- rushes the plot
I don't dislike all of the Light Novel Anime adaptations.
86 is objectively a great adaptation. It not only accurately recreates the LN but enhances it in almost every way. One of the best of all time.
