- Hear about how an apprenticeship works
The Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) provides apprenticeship and supervisor qualifications for the New Zealand building and construction industry. We are appointed by the government to develop professional qualifications and set standards for the industry and are New Zealand's largest provider of building and construction trade apprenticeships. For more information visit www.bcito.org.nz.
do they still do training at places like Unitec to go with the apprenticeship ??
So, that's the whole thing? No school, no exams, no set timeframe? I'm not really getting smarter here. How is an apprenticeship structured?
Around these parts something like carpentry is 4 years of practical work with 4*10 weeks at school inbetween - followed by a test at each interval. And you have to pass the test, otherwise you're not allowed to continue. At school you learn all the theory and is then given time to go straight to the shop to test out said theory. There are pretty strict guidelines for what you're supposed to learn and grading is important.
Though you get paid
