13:40 or so. I 100% agree. I mentioned on another comment how PTA did a great job using the entire screen in gorgeous 65mm for 'The Master', 'Inherent Vice' and 'Phantom Thread.' But he went back to his 'Hard Eight' and 'Boogie Nights' aesthetic for 'LP' and it was a great choice. You could tell he wanted to play around more with the structure, while keeping in mind the films POV and it just works better in widescreen.

Glad to see Kev came around on Magnolia. It's probably one of my five favorite films of all time. The last time I watched it three years ago, I was emotionally drained when it ended. I don't cry in movies often and that movie absolutely destroys me, but in the best possible way. I know a lot of people think it's one of his lesser works and say that's its self indulgent and overlong, but I find something rewarding in every one of the character's storylines and wouldn't take out any scene. Easily my favorite PTA.

I watched it in the theatre on opening weekend (back in the day). I am not exaggerating when I say 40% of the audience walked out at the first "odd" thing (first-hand experience). I loved the movie and the people that stayed to the end actually stood around and discussed the movie in the lobby of the discount/indie theatre. Just strangers talking movies. It was fun.

@@withershin I guess it’s the small town I’m in but when a new pta movie comes out either no one goes, or there’s only a handful of people there. I went to see punch drunk love when it was out in theatres and there was literally 5 people and 2 walked out when the phone $ex scene came up.

If any directors deserve multiple viewings on their work its PTA and Kubrick. Kevin is such a genuine gentleman to talk about all that heat he got on that magnolia situation. Great analysis on the movie man! Served you once at the Friendlys in Middletown Kev, Much love!!!!

That's awesome of Kevin to come clean about this stuff, I always felt like it came from a weird place. Even PTA had a really bloated ego back in those days but it's about how you grow and become yourself that really matters. Both have grown considerably.

I rarely chime in but not only did I come up in Kevin Smith's era, but I've enjoyed being able to engage him outside of the whole movie thing. The "veil" means nothing to him when it comes to sharing some in edgewise how to actually DO this.

Oh this is really cool of you Kevin.
People tried to send me to Pratt as a kid but I didn't know what a Pratt was and found the issue batted around by adults odd. Then they said it was in NYC and I figured I'd never make it off the subway alive, so never went. As a result, I now just play with my cell phone. 😂 Going to school for Art always struck me as a soul killing scam, and I knew I'd probably get kicked out. I founded my own art group later and didn't have a 6 figure college loan on my back. 😁
This concludes the formal submission of my rationalization for a thing mildly related to the topic.

Its to the point where when you see a new PTA film, you may think you know what its gonna be about but he always surprises. Of course part of that is marketing because studios never know how to preview/promote his work but it's also a testament to his originality. Every shot is framed to perfection. I loved how he went against the grain and shot in the 1.83 Aspect Ratio with 65mm film while everyone went widescreen to the point where it became so oversaturated. But, being the genius he is, he made a great choice in reverting back to that 'Boogie Nights' widescreen aesthetic for 'LP.'

Kevin coming around to Magnolia was a great thing to witness. Kevin’s taste had changed, perhaps gotten more (I hate to say) sophisticated, but I adore Kevin - and back in the day, the jabs at Magnolia made me distrust his opinions and disconnect slightly from him as a filmmaker. If Paul had never heard about the Jab at magnolia he would have been the type of filmmaker to sweep in and protect Kevin, maybe even tidy up and influence his tastes.... the magnolia hate was real, and Kevin’s fans followed suit, which disgusted me. PTA is a genuine Auteur, and amazing talent. The Rain of Frogs segment of Magnolia was one of the more surreal, insane elements of ANY film ever made, and cemented him across not just my book, but also Hollywood. Kevin has good
Taste and is hilarious. He should devote his next seven films in an obscure, intelligent, artistic fashion, a la PTA. The results may surprise him.

Not a whole lot to know aside from the technical side of things such as lighting, editing, types of film, lenses and such. But nowadays you can literally make anything you please. The best thing to do is do what Tarantino or Anderson did: watch and absorb as many films as you can. Read books on film criticism and also read scripts and read books about technical aspects and such. In all actuality you don’t need film school. If you have an inherent talent for it hone your craft, do independent studies and experiment with a cheap camera and go from there.
