I'm 82 and grew up in Innisfail. The Boulders was our favorite swimming hole and Etty Bay our favourite beach. Thank you for this memory. I must go back. My Dad painted half those buildings you have shown and made his money from mildew. They were all painted cream then and should be again.
@21EDO same here... great ol swimming hole along with a few others ...ettybay is our 10 day get away for the last 15yrs. Absolute shame the new owners can't get there shit together...fair dinkum useless
That was a really interesting video thank you. I know I’m highly un Ikely to get to Australia, so it’s great to be able to experience it through your eyes.
Nice video without any body trying to sell me s-t, at Paronella Park there is a water turbine used to power the park, after the big flood it fell into disuse, it has been resurrected and again producing power agane, imagine in the 1920 having power from water. It’s worth a visit the whole area is so interesting.
Great video, I enjoyed watching, thank you. I’m Australian, and I didn’t even know this place existed! Now I’m going to have to put it on my list of places to visit in my own country….one day.
Hi! I live south of it and was up in the area and also did Paronella Park. An Aboriginal lady there told me she lived around there as a kid and swam in the water all the time and now no way she ever would get in. Lots of crocs now.
FINALLY!) so awesome to have someone showcase the beauty of the INNISFAIL REGION. The township of Innisfail is a hidden gem. Lovely people and the amazing Art Deco buildings ( council needs to offer some sort of funding to shop owners to maintain the upkeep the painting and mould removal of these awesome buildings ). We bought a property in the STUNNING JUBILEE HEIGHTS RAINFOREST RANGES 10 mins outside innisfail. Amazing place to live and so close to everything you need! Love the comments of everyone who has watched this clip. GO INNISFAIL!!! A hidden GEM of coastal beauty and rainforest.
.Hello, Beautiful areas, You tell wonderful and interesting stories about these places. I lived in Perth, Melbourne, and recently in Brisbane. she nearly got me, i slipped on the rocks don't know how, my legs just got pulled from under me, pulled me down to the edge of a huge rock,i used my whole body to stop me going over the side, i was shaking like a leaf getting out of there.. i was a young man of 21 at the time. (True story )
Babinda is my mum's home town. Was nice and quiet back in the day with little infrastructure rough dirt tracks and few people about. Playboy even did an article on the Boulders and the story in the 1980's.
This is a massive beat up. You can safely slide down the rocks and hundreds of people swim there. It’s pretty obvious where it’s dangerous. Crock of horse 🐴 💩
The Innisfail area is well worth a visit, outside of Cairns to the south. Cairns is the tourist destination but further south is Townsville, it use to be referred to the working man's town. Townsville has a larger population to Cairns and doesn't get the same tourist destination promotion as Cairns does. Having lived in Townsville now for 18 years to date, the entire area from Cairns south includes Ayr, Bowen, Airlie Beach and MacKay. There is no better place to live if your can't tolerate col, wet, southern winters.
Thank you for sharing your video. A recent class mentioned some hazards of low-head dams. The sign at 3:09 shows drowning machines I had no idea could exist. I learned from your video that seismic activity and wooded terrains can create efficient drowning machines in surface or underground watercourse areas, perhaps in weeks rather than centuries. Thank you again. Safe travels and Happy Returns!
I lived for a short time in Innisfail and visited the boulders 46 years ago. Feels weird saying 46 years ago!! There were no fences at the boulders then. We just walked down onto the rocks but didn't dare go in.
Terry ld like to say how much l am enjoying your unique way of showcasing our beautiful Far North Queensland. You do a wonderful job of it. Thank you ❤
I am so glad I stumbled across this video. Everything is just lovely. I'm an American living on the Oregon coast. So, I knew not a thing about this area. I appreciated you giving all that history. The castle is beautiful, and I like thinking about what it was there back the 30's. This has been a much needed escape from real world. Thank you.

Firstly so sorry for your loss. That’s awesome that you’ve been inspired to travel. There are so many beautiful and interesting places in Australia. Enjoy 😀
Certainly a beautiful part of the world. I live just 10 minutes north of Cairns and have visited these areas. I was lucky with Cassowary sightings, there was one in someone’s front yard along Bruce Highway, just before the Etty turnoff. We saw a mum and baby in the bush at the bend before entering the caravan park/shop area. People leave out large buckets of water for the Cassowaries outside their cabins and you can often see them drinking there. And lastly, a young man had brought his grandmother for lunch at the cafe on the balcony part, he had brought out her meal and gone back inside to get his. A Cassowary got up on the balcony and started helping itself to her meal. Chaos ensued and the Cassowary was chased from the balcony. Everyone had a great laugh and it was a cool experience. Thank you for your travelogue, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Happy travels. 🥰
Great Video TERRY. really interested in where you source your music. Especially at 11.45 mark. What is the name of that piece? Thanks and keep posting vids like this. Thanks. Loved every bit of it......
Some didn’t aim to go swimming, they walked on the rocks which can be extremely slippery, fell into the water, slipped under and drowned. It is lovely to visit but stay on the right side of the fence.
Hello there - interesting video. Thank you for sharing it. We were trying to find that song at the 11:43 mark. Tried the link you included but couldn't find it. Do you recall the name of the group, by chance? Thanks for any help you can provide.

There's also the Nerada Tea Plantation, the best tea I've ever tasted. After being introduced to Nerada tea I have never drank any other tea. They were organic before it was even a thing.
Crazy thing is I didn't know about that story. I was filming frogs at the time and the frog species I been looking for months was calling on the edge of the rapids late at night. It was a very eerie feeling like it was tempting me to go to the slippery edge. I didn't. Something felt off. Perhaps it was her spirit luring me?
My friend Jay died at Paronella Park, it was the wet season and was flooding, 4am...our last jump off the bridge and Jay never resurfaced, they found him swallowed by the sand from the waist to his head, just his legs were sticking out, a freak occurence they said. Gosh I haven't thought about these memories for so long. Otherwise Paronella Park is a beautiful place.
Great video. Babinda boulders is one of my favourite places on earth. It’s true, the underwater rock formations are dangerous. There are siphons between big boulders underwater that can suck you through and people can get stuck. I went there when I was 17, on that rare day there was literally no flow. We didn’t know about the dangers then. We swam upstream through a siphon and saw a log across the channel. Could definitely imagine the dangers of being sucked through that channel in the other direction and if the log was there it, the current would trap you against it
New nightmare unlocked! Those boulder pools, what a horrifying way to die. Mainly 19, 21yos i noticed... full of bravado and looking to have intense experiences. We think we are invincible at that age, and not all of us make it. RIP the boulder rockpools people
10:07 You may mention it, but just in case you don't, Paronella had his own hydro power station, and the fountains in the scene at about 10 minutes were all gravity powered as well. I'm not sure if they still are, though.
There is a section of water like this in the UK called "The Strid", the thing with the Strid is it really doesn't look inviting to swim in. The rocks are sharp, rough and slippy, the forest away from the river bed are the dark and creepy kind and the water is so dark brown from running down from the moors its almost black. The problem is its narrow enough to tempt people into trying to jump across it and failure could mean death, this looks really inviting, the green water, rocks a nice place to relax in the sun and the forest seems more full of life than creepy so I can see why people keep drowning there.
That is a beautiful video-country-side & coast are just fabulous. Have had 3 holidays up that way-2 in Noosa & 1 in Port Douglas. We did an all-day trip through the Daintree & back via Raimbow Beach. We started out in a 4WD then a boat up the river. Saw a beautiful green snake in the trees & lots of baby crocs sunning themselves on the rocks They looked very cute. We had a fabulous driver/ tour guide. There must have been about 6 of us & we all got on really well. Rainbow Beach was amazing. Towards the end of the day, we stopped for an ice-cream & saw a Cassowary strolling around. Talk about the icing on the cake! It was one of those perfect days which don't come along too often. Our guide was such a lovely man-he really made it for us. We had paid in advance but we gave him a good tip because he'd been so outstanding. From NZ.
Really good video. Quite professional. Crocs are really only in the tropical parts of Queensland. Never really had to keep my eyes peeled on the Goldie. 😁😁 Had some pretty good weed back in Joe's time. lol He did a good job considering the logistics. Even after all this time the concrete doesn't seem to have too much spalling.

Innisfail is famous for one other reason, it has the highest rainfall of any town in Australia. Best to go there during the dry season, not in January.
I witnessed the drowning here in 2004. A 32yo Adelaide man. I was sitting on the rock down near the last rapids and heard a group coming down the rapids from Devils pools. 3 men and 1 woman. As they got closer 3 of them got out except the Adelaide man. I saw him continue to swim. I approached the others asking what he was doing. They said he was going to continue swimming down the 'chute'. I urged them to convince him to get out as people get trapped and drown.....they went and spoke to him. The last I saw was him laughing at them and continuing to swim towards the chute. His girlfriend was at the bottom of the chute with her camera waiting to get a shot of him. Soon after I realised he was not coming out.....the group started panicking and one of his mates was preparing to jump in to save him but he was not visible. I ran over and grabbed the guy just before he jumped in and said he was going to get stuck in the watwr aswell and drown.....it was one of the most shocking things I had ever witnessed. I went back to carpark and called 000 as there was no reception at the pools.
I visited Babinda years ago and as we were driving down the road, a black cloud appeared and it started to rain. Further down the road, it was dry. So the cloud just rained on us 🥴
@@gail2500 When I was about 15 and riding a motorcycle in Innisfail before I should have been, the rain was just as you described. Time to turn around and ride the other way!
@LetsGo012 it's the best part of it especially when your on the second to last step and look down thinking bloody hell how bad it must've been. You could have left out the tunnel of stink and showed the steps as they are far more interesting. No offence intended just my personal opinion
My Dad sent tme there 1942. He served the US Army Signal Corps, 565th Signal Air Warnng. He mentoned renting a horse at a local livery stsble an riding out to the Boulders. He survived OK(good swimmer)He befriended a lcal businessman who was from Canada, but who hd once lived in Texas, name of "Tex" Turnley.he also mentined hiking up Mount Bartle Frere to see a crashed B-25 of the 3rd bomb group. Apprently it had struck the mountain in bad weather returning from a mission.thanksvery much fo the reat video. Dad spent quite some time in Australia and spoke of it often.
Really enjoyed this. Have wanted to visit this area, and Townville, for quite some time. Have already been to Cairns a couple of times and loved every bit of it (except the humidity!). Still a bit scared of Nth QLD- too many crocs in the rivers; and stingers at the beach; and killer plants! But I love how it looks. Will def look through the rest of your vids. This is the best way to armchair travel for someone who can no longer get out there for myself. Cheers!
Looks like the Strid in Yorkshire UK, the most dangerous waterway in the world? It has the same overhanging rock and deadly currents that will suck you under.

Brilliantly documented, stunning scenery and excellent choice of music! ❤
@@simonspall91 Polly Creek. Haven't heard of that one.

Is there really Croc's. Do they have warning signs

Yes there are warning signs
I’m no expert but my understanding is the croc population is increasing. The young males need to move further up river to establish their territory.

What a terrible tragedy to witness. Sending hugs
It is so sad that people ignore the warning signs .
Maybe they are locals and know what the risks are and what they are doing :)
Always like your videos very professional but you're always very humble and friendly good work
I visited Babinda years ago and as we were driving down the road, a black cloud appeared and it started to rain. Further down the road, it was dry. So the cloud just rained on us 🥴
@@gail2500 When I was about 15 and riding a motorcycle in Innisfail before I should have been, the rain was just as you described. Time to turn around and ride the other way!
@21ED0 I think that there was also lightning in the cloud, but it was a long time ago. 😊
😅 I know what you mean!!
Excellent video mate.
What kind of work did you leave for this amazing lifestyle?
Not a high paying one that’s for sure. Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and do what makes you happy.
@@LetsGo012Thank goodness you did! Absolutely amazing!! 😊
You didnt show the steps that show the different levels of floods throughout the years at paranella
It didn’t make the cut. Time constraints
@LetsGo012 it's the best part of it especially when your on the second to last step and look down thinking bloody hell how bad it must've been. You could have left out the tunnel of stink and showed the steps as they are far more interesting. No offence intended just my personal opinion
@@LetsGo012what constraints the time of the video?

You are one lucky guy, thanks so much I loved every minute you produced, really well presented plus gorgeous music. 😎🇦🇺✅
Thanks so much.
There is so much history you have left out of the Paranella Park story. Thats a bit sad to me. But thankyou for showcasing it anyway.
Thank you so much for the video. very informative, god knows how many lives you have saved by posting this video. god bless.
Cheers!
Cool video mate. Interesting places you went to! Andre
Beautiful, I was overcome when I went there, truly a gem !
Me and the kids went swimming there last week. Beautiful.
Great video mate. Wondering about the swimming at Etty Bay, aren't their crocodiles there or is it considered safe to swim there?
There are nets & lifeguards at Etty Bay so it seemed pretty safe to swim. Check when you’re there
Lovely video.
Awesome vid thanks for sharing
Thanks & you’re welcome 😀
Are there crocs at paranella?
There was a sign advising against swimming because of possible crocs.
Looks like the Strid in Yorkshire UK, the most dangerous waterway in the world? It has the same overhanging rock and deadly currents that will suck you under.
A great clip - thanks. Have to say, though, added to these dangerous currents, Noahs and crocs, I'm not sure I need to bring my togs.
I always wondered where to get my spiritual homewares in Babinda!
I’m glad someone gets my jokes 😂
