this is probably the hardest i have ever worked on a video that has my face looking towards the camera. i hope you find this genuinely helpful, and if you have any questions or find any inaccuracies please post to the comments. for some reason the thought kept slipping my mind when i was recording, but you will most likely need a Time Base Corrector if you are routing your analog signal to anything that is not a CRT TV or a VCR. Because TBCs are getting increasingly rare to find, you might be better off getting a video mixer (which more or less have TBCs built-in). Big Pauper, another prominent glitch artist that has been around in the scene for well over a decade and also modifies video circuits, has some good thoughts on which mixers have good TBC abilities: glitchart.com/glitch-art-video-production/ *** On second thought, TBCs are only really needed if you're deliberately distorting your analog video signals with circuit bent gear. You can get away without one if you're just doing regular built-in effects or feedback loops. I made a video about this exact topic here: th-cam.com/video/so7Mk16wGrA/w-d-xo.html
Dude you are super cool!!! Seem like a great person to be friends with... and the video is great and informative and inspiring. I’m getting ready to start my foray into glitch art/ doing a fever dream-esque live stream party and your videos have been super helpful
You said you use a Sony handy cam what model is it? I was looking into a Panasonic AG 450-455 but they are a bitch to find in working condition. Do you have any advice on older cams that can be used? Thankyou
Shout out all the other glitch art TH-camrs y’all are amazing but FINALLY, a video about glitch art that is actually edited and not done in one hour long take...much appreciated 🙏🏼
Man, your videos are a wealth of info. I cant thank you enough for what you do! big ups homie... I'm trying to find a TBC here in Australia so I can glitch out my liquid light visuals and capture them. Im feeling a lot more confident knowing you're here to guide us oh great vis wizard Yovozol.
amazing. i've been doing projector based captures for a while, and i wasn't sure if there was a reason why more people don't use it. i've started to use all three methods interchangeably depending on the look i'm going for. great video!
youre doing a great job and i appreciate your information and im sure that im not the only one who wants to know how to do this. the fact that youre even doing this tbh shows your personal character and motivations and its of a higher value than i think other artists express. youre like an early wizardly teacher of analog video glitch art and whether you get recognition of that doesnt change the facts that youre one of the first to do that.. Its like modern history in the making. (but dont get carried away with ego cuz thats malproductive in general but youre doing a good thing and *pats on the back* for that)
If you want to upload footage on TH-cam, scale it up to 4K, even if you recorded it on HD - TH-cam allows a higher bitrate on 4K (44-56 Mbit/s) as on HD (10Mbit/s). You can get way more details with this one, very nice with CRT stuff ;). As a filmmaker I can also recomment to setup the shutter to the number which is double the framerate, with this setting the motion looks natural. (Or you can just use 180 degree, if you have a camera which allows it) But you have to be lucky to get away from scanlines this way, depends on which CRT you're using. Keep on producing great stuff like this, very informative ;)
Thanks for watching! and yes sometimes I upload my analog videos in 1440p, but I haven't tried 4k though, I would guess it's probably a very dimished return by that point. And yeah I am also aware of shutter speed generally needing to be at least twice as fast as the video's FPS, but in this case when I'm just recording a screen, 1/60 shutter speed and 60fps works fine, I haven't noticed much of a difference from 30fps. I can't go faster than 1/60 shutter speed when doing rescans since it will cause scanning issues.
Thanks for the video man, i dont have anything to make these type of tapes but this topic is interesting as hell, i wanna make these in the future but as of now all i can do is watch other people make them, great video hope to see more in the future
Thank you so much for sharing this video and all your other guides! Photography is my background and I’ve been trying to learn more about analogue glitching. I’ve experimented with data bending with images using Audacity. I’ve also tried experimenting with replicating the results in photoshop but the level of control makes it hard to replicate the results exactly with out make a bunch of adjustment. The process also isn’t as exciting as. Cheers, from Australia dude!
Never felt more appreciated for watching through an entire video lol. Awesome job on presenting all or most of the info I would need to start doing this. I was very insightful. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the glitching in Floating Points' new music video "Vocoder", It is probably some of the coolest glitching I've ever seen. Give it a watch!
I had a cheap AV to HDMI and a capture card that used to pick up the glitches and FF's/Rewinds but it broke. When I bought a new AV to HDMI it no longer works and I get a blue screen. I got another one and same thing. I dont want to buy a TBC because ive done it without it, but I dont know how or why my new AV to HDMI gives be a blue screen
Cool vid. I love the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle but it came with a sharp learning curve. I can now playback from Premiere Pro timeline via the Shuttle and onto CRT and multiple VCRs for bulk vhs tape dubbing. It also works the other way around to capture into a timeline, but always takes some configuring
Interesting feedback … I do have trouble to bring back analog signal into computer … which TBC do you use to stabilize the signal to make it accepted by the intensity shuttle ???
great video, i'm surprised thugh you didnt mention capture devices like the canopus grass valley using firewire import. probably one of the more esoteric methods but my personal favorite for direct capture. mentioning projection method is cool no one talks about that. cheers!
i didn't talk about firewire or old motherboard video cards designed for an OS like windows XP, since especially younger artists don't have computers that are that old and firewire by now is kind of obsolete
yo just wanted to comment on one of ur videos, thanks for all the good info regarding analog shit. its been such a pain finally getting a working setup but im lit now.
Excellent video video and good information 👍👍 regarding the scrolling black bars in CRTs, an old video guy told me simply match the shutter speed of the camera to the refresh rate or Hertz of the CRT monitor👍 for instance a 60hz monitor can be captured with a 1/60 shutter speed.
about to jump in have been capturing a bunch of old analog content.have an svideo splitter that i plan on putting into a crt with one signal being from a svhs deck the other will be a feedback loop with crt from an svhs cam. i imagine that i will get an echo effect of the video thats playing off the deck. if that works out i will try to get the signal coming into davinchi resolve live and mess with it more.
The logical process is actually to search RCA to HDMI and then get absolutely swamped by product reviews and then remember Yovoz already talked about this and come back to see the video again.
I recently bought the Elgato Cam Link 4K to try to capture the output of my video glitcher, but I have to use one of those AV2HDMI things before to convert the analog signal and connect to Elgato through HDMI. However I can barely see the output in OBS, it's coming out black most of the time. I assume it's because of the conversion those AV2HDMI devices do, and detect the intentional glitch as an unwanted signal. Is there anything else I can try to capture this in a better way? I have one of those USB dongles (that work) but I would like to improve my setup
Nevermind I figured out the issue. I had the Cam Link plugged through a USB hub instead of directly through a USB 3.0 motherboard input. Seems to work great so far. Thanks for the amazing video btw.
This is how to destroy your tv from the inside while attempting to get similar effects that a circuit bent pedal or rack will do, it will create very subtle effects at the cost of likely obliterating/maybe erasing memory on the tv it could also cause it to shut off I wouldnt recommend unless you wanna murder your crt in .2 seconds. Different story when it comes to magnets and vcrs but again its a gamble and will destroy yo shit
Do you know how to upload a minidv tape that’s old and glitches really bad is there anyway to save the video? It glitches and freezes then screen turns black… just trying to save the footage off of that tape. Any advice will help thanks
Id love to see a video about realtime glitching. For example, taking a GoPro straight into a glitching machine and/or a computer and showing how this can be achieved. I do a lot of live-streaming with multiple GoPros going into a video switcher, but I would like to have some realtime effects happening that can also be audio reactive. Up for doing a video on that>? :-)
Aye, a fellow glitch enthusiast. Subbed=] I started last year with the same usb capture method! Definitely need to get the cam link and an upscaler but would I need both to get a wide-screen image?
well u will need an upscaler regardless to convert analog to digital, u cant use a camlink by itself. widescreen 16:9 only comes in at the software side, u will need to stretch, or some digital monitors and capture things do it automatically
Awesome vid. Any thoughts on downscalers? I'm pretty set on re-scanning for getting media into my computer, but I also want to be able to edit and then scoot it back into my V4 and other mixers. I'm just wondering if the cheap ones are good or if it's less finicky going D->A. I would also love to hear from anyone who has tried one of those little Ipod looking converters.
Hello hopefully you can help me out...I’m trying to use a Canopus ADVC-55 ton a MacBook bro 2015. I have a CERRXIAN FireWire IEEE 1394 Type A 400 6 Pin Female to 1394 Type B 800 9 Pin Male Data Transfer Adapter Converte connected to a APPLE Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and it makes the Box turn on and everything so it’s giving it power right ? My question is...why won’t the program show up It says in the manual that I don’t have to install anything.
Are there any capture devices that will make the colors look as vivid as they do when watching the tape on a CRT? I'm considering going with a DSLR and filming the TV but thats a lot of investment and I know nothing about cameras.
i am not sure but u can always bump up saturation in post regardless of capture method. side note, im routinely shocked how many people say they want to do stuff with analog video but also say they know nothing about cameras and editing. i doubt that analog video hardware is the best place to start if you're in that boat.
Super cool video! I recently discovered this “glitch scene” and just bought my first dyi analog glitch module. Any tips for starters? That could be a good video as well. To show with what devices you started.
might make a video about some intro stuff. buying a diy module is a good move. makes it a lot easier and fun to experiment. i didn't start out with any real gear i mostly played with VHS and Hi8 tapes and camera feedback.
Back in the day, lots of tape based video cameras had video line in, enabling source recording. Are there any models of older SD card or hard drive based cameras with this feature ?? I realise that there are some drone video recorder options that have source line in to record the transmitted video.
Yea they do exist, I have one. As soon as the video signal gets even slightly out of whack the thing stops recording so it’s a bit useless. As far as drone recorders go, they are a lot more fault tolerant because they are designed for the drone flying at the edges of the broadcast range, but there are also a lot of bad quality ones out there. Have a look at the ImmersionRC PowerPlay for an example of a good one, though I’ve not tried recording glitchy video with it. Perhaps I should test that…
Thank you mate - your viz are so right ! Need to keep pushing and creating - Wonder if you know why I can only get feedback (from v4 and mx1) that goes from right to left? Would love to centralise my feedback like the projector shots
You the man! Thanks so much for this video... super helpful and you should make more videos like these One question, How do you reduce instagram compression even after you have your analog video digitized... Seems like no matter what, if you have a lot of movement or detail.. TH-cam, FB and IG compression will destroy it
IG is tough, and I don't know much about FB but I'm sure the same applies to what I'm about write: on TH-cam there is a trick where, say you captured your analog video at 1080p or 720p in OBS, you can re-export the capture from a video editor at 1440p, so that way when you upload it at that res and it's played back on people's screens at 1440p, the details will be better preserved, especially if the viewer has a 1080px screen. Fast moving and busy visuals are always going to destroyed by compression regardless, since the bitrates these websites compress videos down to simply can't preserve that level of detail - except for Vimeo, which is why lots of artists in general upload stuff there for their portfolios. Only thing you can really do is to upload high bitrate videos in the hopes that the compression algorithm will at least consider saving some details.
@George Gleixner Ahh so you suggest uploading with the highest bitrate possible and let YT or FB take care of it... Or do you suggest precompressing so FB and YT don't have to do much?
@@YOVOZOL Haha, alrighty man! Yhanks for replying so quickly. Gonna look for 4:3's only now. Ps. Found a nice Mezkalin glitch machine, great tip about that builder :-)
You mentioned avoiding cheap projectors, do you have an opinion on LCD vs DLP projectors? I’m looking into picking up a used epson 3lcd projector that I’d like to try and capture from.
yo this is so sick ty for explaining all of this! i just found out analog glitch visuals was a thing when i was looking for transitions to use in different videos. one thing i was wondering is how you go about putting the footage you want to capture (like different stock footage or motion typography) on the crt so you can capture it?
How would incorporate a TBC or a mixer with a TBC into my signal chain? I've used an Elgato video capture in the past but now I want to use a composite to HDMI upscaller and a cam link!
Hey dude, great content! I have a quick question: Im planing to buy Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle but it's only for capture to computer or I can transmit the image from computer to Tube TV via HDMI to S-video on my circuit bent? Thank you so much for you doing this and pls keep going!
I think it works both ways dont quote me on that but I hope it works out for u. I have heard about people loving it and hating it so just be sure to do full research
@@YOVOZOL found one on a website but it looks like Windows only. strange because couldnt find any Windows only on the internet.. maybe the website put missing info idk
I have a Sony Handycam that films on hi8 is it possible to get that on the CRT TV? And then if so will i have to recapture it on a normal digital camera?
Hi! Interested viewer here & 1. Great comprehensive video especially coming from someone who knows little to nothing about this art medium but is very intrigued to delve into it 2. I’m curious as to which visual analog mixer you recommend for beginners? I’ve been having my eye on the Edirol v4 & am wondering if that’s a good one to start out with 3. Your work looks super familiar...have you ever worked with Non Plus? 4. Please keep uploading instructional & informational videos on this art medium because you are by far the most helpful person I’ve come across for a noob like myself ! Update: I ended up buying the v8 because a guy just put up a listing for one on eBay for $400 total :’)
heyy glad my videos are of help! the v8 was a great choice (though not for capturing certain glitches if u watch my TBC video). i have not worked for them hmm. and a few more guide type videos to come this spring/summer
do you have any advice for finding these small CRT monitors with a flat screen surface? I've been browsing eBay for an hour now and haven't really found one
could you use a iphone to capture crt footage? i’ve been watching a lot of your videos and eventually want to get more gear. the first thing i’ve got so far is a crt tv but was curious on how a iphone 13 would work?
I love that this video and scene exists. Just as I discovered this type of video art, a crtv magically plopped its way into my life. I’m still a bit confused about the projector method, as this is the current method I am most interested in. Where are the visuals coming from on the projector? Is the camcorder plugged into the projector and then filming the wall, thus creating the same effect as if it was filming a tv?
@@YOVOZOL If you're sending video feed from a hdmi source into the projector, how do you plug your camera into the projector at the same time to create the feedback loop with visuals?
@@YOVOZOL it definitely does. Might drop the signal occasionally but looks great. Direct to OBS was hardly working, especially without any TBC to stabilize the signal. Will try recording to VHS first before uploading to OBS! Thanks for all the info, you’re a legend.
I wish I found this video like two years ago through trail and error, I've tried, failed and succeeded at all of these methods 😅 just wanted to comment to say anyone thinking of buying the black magic intensity shuttle assuming, more expensive must be better, it's really not. I couldn't get it to work with anything, the camera settings have to be exact to the awkward software to have to use and any dodgy analogue signal it just doesn't understand, and obs also struggles. Just a tip for anyone thinking about it, I've wasted my money there 🤷
Please bro have tabs in your video 😭 I had to go thru mumbling in your videos to figure what you talking about; spent an hour trynna find you explain something someone did in 4 minutes 😔 good videos but man some tabs would be very helpful
it might be, i once almost tried to. my only worry is if your tv/monitor with ypbpr is going to enjoy displaying a corrupted signal like that. please do it and share the results!
@@YOVOZOL thanks for the reply!! i definitely will but I think I might need more than a dirty mixer. is it essential to get a video mixer like the roland V8? i recently purchased a patchbay from Martino thinking i could use the dirty mixer to blend video together but the more im researching the more i see that having multiple sources ready to go or to be able to blend 3 or 4 or even 5 sources together is where it gets interesting. as im returning to video glitch art, what would be a decent work around?

Perhaps I should test that…
@@bytesabre Excellent Intel, thank you 👍😉
i knew you were boc fan. nice vid!!
Thank you mate - your viz are so right !
Need to keep pushing and creating -
Wonder if you know why I can only get feedback (from v4 and mx1) that goes from right to left?
Would love to centralise my feedback like the projector shots
use a camera ;)
You the man! Thanks so much for this video... super helpful and you should make more videos like these
One question,
How do you reduce instagram compression even after you have your analog video digitized...
Amazing video, how did you get the effect at 19:35 ?!
just watch the rest of the video from that point and u will have the answer!
For the curved glass from CRTs, would you change the depth of field to grab a more wide focus plane?
it's possible, every screen+camera combo might work differently
In Glitch Art Anything Goes™
Can you please make a New playlist for this sort of instructional content ?
Wow just dove into this wonderful world yesterday. A world I wished existed and now I know exists. Recreating my teenage dreams
this is awesome!! about the tv, idk, i would stay away from CRTs that aren't 4:3 ha
LCD vs DLP doesn't matter that much imo. hope that projector works out for you!
yo this is so sick ty for explaining all of this! i just found out analog glitch visuals was a thing when i was looking for transitions to use in different videos. one thing i was wondering is how you go about putting the footage you want to capture (like different stock footage or motion typography) on the crt so you can capture it?
hey thanks. that step is simple. its called downscaling. just a cheap hdmi to rca converter on amazon will do. might make a video about it.
How would incorporate a TBC or a mixer with a TBC into my signal chain? I've used an Elgato video capture in the past but now I want to use a composite to HDMI upscaller and a cam link!
a video on this exact topic is coming in a few days :)
@@YOVOZOL sweet! Looking forward to it😊
Hey dude, great content! I have a quick question:
Im planing to buy Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle but it's only for capture to computer or I can transmit the image from computer to Tube TV via HDMI to S-video on my circuit bent? Thank you so much for you doing this and pls keep going!
I think it works both ways dont quote me on that but I hope it works out for u. I have heard about people loving it and hating it so just be sure to do full research
@@YOVOZOL found one on a website but it looks like Windows only. strange because couldnt find any Windows only on the internet.. maybe the website put missing info idk
no thoughts only zoom
I have a Sony Handycam that films on hi8 is it possible to get that on the CRT TV? And then if so will i have to recapture it on a normal digital camera?
if its an analog camera all u need is an rca cable to connect it :) and in the last sentence you answered your own question !
I've been browsing eBay for an hour now and haven't really found one
have you tried looking up "pro crt" or "broadcast monitor" or the "pvm" or "bvm" models from sony?
could you use a iphone to capture crt footage? i’ve been watching a lot of your videos and eventually want to get more gear. the first thing i’ve got so far is a crt tv but was curious on how a iphone 13 would work?
if you use an iPhone to film the CRT TV then both items will catch fire and you will have 7 years of bad luck... jk, just film and find out lol.
@@YOVOZOL lol will do! turns out my GF has a handy man camera chilling around the house 💀
How did you get the Pokémon video on the tv?
with a hdmi to av downscaler
Question - what sort of sizes are ideal as far as CRTs go?
any size you can carry honestly
I love that this video and scene exists. Just as I discovered this type of video art, a crtv magically plopped its way into my life. I’m still a bit confused about the projector method, as this is the current method I am most interested in. Where are the visuals coming from on the projector? Is the camcorder plugged into the projector and then filming the wall, thus creating the same effect as if it was filming a tv?
awesome glad you found this video. and yes, anytime you point a camera at a monitor of any type, a feedback loop is created.
Cool. And so how was that automated blue light panning from right to left created then in this video?
@@YOVOZOL If you're sending video feed from a hdmi source into the projector, how do you plug your camera into the projector at the same time to create the feedback loop with visuals?
appreciate the knowledge bro
10:27 that.s amazing how did you do that?
watch my rig rundown and welcome to my channel where i do videos like that all the time :)
Great video !
Does glitch from a dirty mixer work when recording to a VHS tape?
I believe it should - only one way to find out for sure ;)
@@YOVOZOL it definitely does. Might drop the signal occasionally but looks great. Direct to OBS was hardly working, especially without any TBC to stabilize the signal. Will try recording to VHS first before uploading to OBS! Thanks for all the info, you’re a legend.
dig your content - nice work!
Чувак, спасибо огромное, что делишься.
Great info, thanks 👍
I wish I found this video like two years ago through trail and error, I've tried, failed and succeeded at all of these methods 😅 just wanted to comment to say anyone thinking of buying the black magic intensity shuttle assuming, more expensive must be better, it's really not. I couldn't get it to work with anything, the camera settings have to be exact to the awkward software to have to use and any dodgy analogue signal it just doesn't understand, and obs also struggles.
Just a tip for anyone thinking about it, I've wasted my money there 🤷
yeah i never really understood the deal with the black magic thing, it seems unnecessarily finniky.
What type of digital camera do you use for recapture?
any digital camera works but I have just a canon camcorder from early 2010s that just shoots in HD
@@YOVOZOL Just curious - looking to buy one and looking for recommendations. Thanks
Please bro have tabs in your video 😭 I had to go thru mumbling in your videos to figure what you talking about; spent an hour trynna find you explain something someone did in 4 minutes 😔 good videos but man some tabs would be very helpful
yeah nvm i aint learn shit from you just about your own videos and what effects you use, and maybe you calling yourself crazy every 5 minutes 😔
Look into Tyler Cassie anyone need quick and straight to the point help
you're a godsend
so good
good job
ajsajsa muy bueno hermano garcias por esto!!!!!!!
quick question, would it be possible to dirty mix the color stream inputs? Y Pa Pr?
it might be, i once almost tried to. my only worry is if your tv/monitor with ypbpr is going to enjoy displaying a corrupted signal like that. please do it and share the results!
