    If we choose a language learning strategy for ourselves, then we have no right to feel frustration. We have to accept that we will gradually understand more and more. We should do what we can to make it easier to succeed but not set our standards so high that we are easily disappointed.

      I'm enjoying Lingq a lot with my Portuguese, the thing is that I'd rather repeat a story until I know everything by heart, the advantage I have now over when I was in school for Mandarin is that I can stay with one story for however long I want and if I get bored (which I usually don't because I don't get bored until I know the story inside out) then I move on to another story. Thank you for this motivating video. 🙏

    Consistency is key. Discipline and habits beat motivation. Set a time of the day in which you'll read and listen to language learning material, and do it every day, whether you feel like doing it or not. In a few months, you'll be glad you forced yourself to do it.
    As for what to listen/read:
    Phase 1 should be short, simple stories. LingQ, Assimil, etc. Read and listened over and over again until you know basic grammar and vocab.
    Phase 2 should be the interesting stuff, audiobooks, podcasts, etc. But in order to be able to enjoy these, you need to understand at least enough to get the gist.

      I'd agree discipline is vital but motivation is still the driver for most people. I mean long term, not " how I feel today stuff ". But definitely consistently chipping at it us needed.. it's nearly impossible to feel progress on a short time frame, so that makes that lack of positive reinforcement via " reward of success" a demotivation " if you are not aware of it. I found it generally takes a few months to look back n see progress.. so, with other things too, a lot of beginners give up in frustration by month 3 and we'll that's the end of that. Krashen talked about kind of motivation , just for " extrinsic " things it's hard for most to keep going with " discipline" ( some can ..) personal or " intrinsic " motivations he claimed to be better indicators of success .. basically I'd agree with that, that was my experience... I can "diligence" my ass off if it's important to me, if not, meh. ...

    • @NaturalLanguageLearning

      @@kpopandotherplaylists2518 habit building is key. Instead of "learning every day", make it "learn every day, after doing X, in Y place, with Z system". You're way more likely to do it.

    Learning a language is like learning how to dance, focus in rhythm and flow, in few words, mimic the speaker gestures and expressions, more like being an actor, for example; imitating "Jack Sparrow", it's fun and it never gets bored, at the end it gives you a good laugh 😃.

      @@williambudd2850 I don't think the statement of Dr Krashen is you *only* learn from comprehensible input, but it certainly is most efficient. If you have followed some of the experiences of Matt vs Japan, you will have seen that he initially listened without comprehending but still was able to infer meaning and with repetition to infer more and more. Don't underestimate your ability to infer meaning from context (in a film for instance). But, comprehensible input is faster. I use both, comprehensible input for understanding (from lingq) and listening to podcasts or tv-shows for which I do not always have a script or translation. For me they serve different purposes. Lingq expands my understanding of new words, the podcasts and tv shows help me understand speech better, distinguish spoken words and in time hopefully help with automatic understanding of speech and writing.

    04:26 this is quite my listening routine with Arabic. I listen more than at least 1h a day to the Arabic-language BBC Radio. I listen to the language as if I was listening to music, and often in news you will acquire certain words by context and repetition (for example, during elections the word "election" will pop up so many times that it will be easy to memorize). Apart from those "seasonal" words, news tend to feature the same vocab over and over, so I search for these terms on Google translate (formerly on Wikitionary, also great source, but slower) and vocab gets acquired steadily.

    Watching 5 seasons of LOST without subtitles helped me to improve my English pretty much. The thing about watching TV series is that you get familiar with the pronunciation of the main characters and get introduced to that of the supporting ones, also during the development of the events the main characters repeat many words in their dialogues and say new words too.

    I think learning to Understand what things are needed , then adding tools for those seperate tasks is A key. Being actively involved in controlling your learning is vital. Learning a language has multiple smaller tasks. Gaining a variety of opinions and perspectives is also well worth it, without agreeing to all they say. As the japanese phrase goes, keeping going is power. If you stop you lose, if you don't stop you will learn a language eventually.

    Always enjoy watching your videos, Steve! Definitely appreciate the short videos over sifting through the comment section every time! In a similar topic: do you have any particular methods to deal with those days where you suddenly can’t seem to form any sentences or complete thoughts in another language? It’s frustrating to be reading one day, then wake up the next and the text feels like a brand-new language. I’m currently studying Japanese, and sometimes the characters look natural to me, and other times I can’t read a thing. Perhaps I just need more practice hitting these walls and get used to pushing through.

    Salut Steve. Il y a juste 3 mois depuis que j'ai commencé à apprendre l'anglais, mais j'ai préféré votre méthode qui consiste à lire et à écouter des contenus qui nous intéresse. Qu'est ce que je fais : j'ai pris 3 dialogues que j'écoute simultanément, et chaque dialogue à une durée d'une minutes, donc au total 3 mn. C'est ce dialogue que j'écoute du lundi au dimanche, et je fais 6 heures d'écouter par jours, c'est à dire 3 heures le matin et 3 heures le soir. Dans la semaine je fais 42 heures d'écoute seulement pour 3 dialogues. Et ça fait 3 mois que je fais ça, mais franchement j'ai l'impression que je n'apprend rien. Par ce que je ne me rappelle même pas dès fois ce que j'apprends. Dès fois j'essaie de me remémorer ce que j'ai appris, mais rien ne vient dans ma tête et sur ma langue. Dès fois aussi en écoutant je me perd, c'est à dire que mon esprit va ailleurs et après je le tire. À votre avis est-ce que je suis entrain d'apprendre comme ça ? Est-ce que je dois changer quelque chose dans ma manière d'étudier (l'écoute). Selon vous qu'est ce qui ne va pas dans mon apprentissage ? Franchement je suis confus et, je ne sais plus quoi faire?

    • @Thelinguist
      @Thelinguist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      il est mieux de ne pas être trop conscient de soi pendant ce processus d'apprentissage ni trop impatient. Il ne faut pas non plus écouter toujours les mêmes contenus. L'important c'est de laisser la langue entrer dans son cerveau. Écouter un contenu donné puis ensuite continuer avec quelque chose d'autre pour ensuite retourner à des contenus antérieurs. Le cerveau a besoin de répétition et de nouveauté. Et bien sûr je recommande notre site LingQ.
