    A first look at one of the most anticipated games to cover the American Civil War, drawing inspirations from epics like Sid Meier’s Gettysburg, Scourge of War: Gettysburg, Civil War 2, Total War, and Ultimate General: Civil War, Grand Tactician: The Civil War looks like it wants to be a blend of the best of all the above, can it pull it off? Check out this series and you be the judge.
    Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865) is a real-time strategy game combining a strategic campaign with tactical battle (much like Total War) Gameplay. Run your nation, muster, manage, and support your Armies, and maneuver them to defeat the enemy. Once opposing armies meet, command your troops to victory in epic battles fought on historical battles, like Gettysburg, Antietam, Manassas, and many more. See if you have what it takes to crush the Rebellion and preserve the Union or establish the Confederate States of America as an independent country in this sprawling wargame.

    Bragg had a reputation for being a strict disciplinarian and one who adhered to regulations literally. There is a famous, apocryphal story, included in Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs, about Bragg as a company commander at a frontier post where he also served as quartermaster. He submitted a requisition for supplies for his company, then as quartermaster declined to fill it. As company commander, he resubmitted the requisition, giving additional reasons for his requirements, but as the quartermaster he denied the request again. Realizing that he was at a personal impasse, he referred the matter to the post commandant, who exclaimed, "My God, Mr. Bragg, you have quarreled with every officer in the army, and now you are quarreling with yourself!" That post Commander was Joseph E Johnson

    23:45 You ordered the southern corps to advance in "Assault" stance - so he slowly advanced in battle-line order...
    26:30 Corps tries to form battle formation...
    32:28 advances in battle formation
    No need to constantly blame the commander or the game for not advancing fast enough - he does as he has been ordered by you.
    Please try to pay more attention to the buttons and possible actions you choose and read the tooltips ;-)

      This game looks like it utterly sucks. It was on my steam wishlist and I planned to purchase August 21st when it comes out but now I'm holding off. • @thehistoricalgamer
      @thehistoricalgamer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was under the impression that the Stance, "Assault" "Advance" "skirmish" etc is treated more like an "aggression" order, not a formation order, I'll have to double check the manual on that. Since it's a commander stance I don't think it makes a ton of sense for it to be actual formation orders but I might be wrong on that.

    • @jatzi1526
      @jatzi1526 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thehistoricalgamer My guess is it partly plays into formation and movement speed maybe? An assault stance probably isn't what you want when you're just moving across empty ground. Advance might be better. So you advance to a certain point and then switch to assault when you actually begin attacking. I imagine an advancing army isn't necessarily going to be in a battle line while in an assault stance they are cuz you've told them they need to assault something. That takes time and slows everything down. At around 35:15 you get mad that your reinforcements are stopping to deploy against a lone brigade. You told them to assault something so they did. I'm thinking the assault stance is akin to an attack-move order.

      Actually, that is historical. Bragg didn't realize the size of the Union army and thought that McCook's corps was pretty much the whole thing. He left his defensive position and marched to flank the corps from the north and chewed up McCook while the other two Union corps more or less sat there, not knowing much was up due to the acoustic shadow. At the end of the day, Bragg found out the actual situation and retired, and soon found that he had to abort the entire invasion due to the size of the army and the lack of a Kentucky rising. This started the feud between him and the KY contingent of his army.

      Scourge of War is anything but fast paced imho. Apparently most experts believe it’s a dead letter, the appropriations won’t be passed this year in an election year and it’s unlikely to have any chance of a formal spending bill until after the election. I’d be afraid of the next congress having something like this go through. I have no issues if some of the monuments were reworked or reworded. Some of the language on the state monuments at Gettysburg is very cringe and lost cause. Additionally many union veterans were angry and opposed when some CSA monuments were put up at Gettysburg in the 1880s. That said MOST of the items that would count as memorials or monuments at Gettysburg are regimental and brigade markers that lay out positions and strengths and I can’t imagine Gettysburg or Antietam without these as they really bring the field to life and help teach why the battle unfolded the way it did. Additionally I do think memorials to the fallen are appropriate and respectful (though ideally without the glorification to righteousness language that many of them have). I guess what I’m saying is some reworking of the statues and monuments feels appropriate (I’m firmly opposed to lost cause monuments) but this policy seems to take a sledge hammer to an issue that requires a scalpel, shocking that our elected officials are completely ignorant or lazy so as to not understand the need for nuanced legislation (sarcasm). We’ll see but I suspect the energy needed to refine this legislation will be in 2021, not 2020.
