Years ago, I worked for a very reputable transport company...who proposed what was a road/rail system...lots of bbbee wangling...and then nothing happened and all was canceled... If only that system was used...many if not most of the truck would have been removed from long haul roads...Do not be mistaken...trucks are still needed to do the "last-mile" delivery... We would've used our rails 100%...roads would be better maintained, less wear due to less trucks...jobs created etc. etc. etc. The current government stupidity is glaring in most of what is happening in South Africa....PRIVATISE the lot...there is money, jobs a future locked up....strangled by this corrupt cANCer government...
The key take-away here is that the private sector does not trust the government to respect property rights and stay out of decision making. I am reading between the lines that "not sure as how the regulator is going to be" as how much are we going to need to pay to bribes, what is the hidden cost going to be...
Howzit : I am a dedicated * TRAIN-OU * living in Nottingham Road and I confirm that even with the highly reduced number of Trains ( Up and Down ); they are indeed held-over at both NR and Lions River ( Available passing-loops ); with Balgowan and Lidgetton inbetween. Between Lidgetton and Balgowan; there are at least 4 Sections of the upline Overhead Catenary that have been stolen; this being on the HIGHLY strategic Durban / Johannesburg double mainline. And do not get me wrong; this did not happen juss sommer last week ! The rails have a thick layer of surface rust and weeds that are over a metre high grow out of the Ballast in the middle of the track ! In other words; this double-mainline has been reduced to that of a SINGLE mainline between NR + LR ! The available passing-loops at both Lidgetton + Balgowan are similarly rust-coated and grown over with weeds. Only the single centre; bi-directional mainline at these two Stations is being used. Several months ago whilst off-road bike-riding; I came across a parked-off; deserted ( No security ) ( Brake-Chocked ) unit POTASH Train on the down-line; about 4 Kms out of multi-tracked LR; the Train being left there for nearly 48 Hours ! Not only did this Train block the ENTIRE Durban / Joburg mainline; but it had been parked across the ONLY only access road to about 4 local farms .... Even the regional Security Company patrol vehicle was stuck on the wrong side of the tracks for the duration ! Know that in the * Olden Days; * this important economic artery was a non-stop parade of Trains carrying ALL forms of cargo / lading ! On consideration; what the HELL is the reason for the existence of an over-bloated; inefficient snd self-destructing Transnet ? Sadly; there are NO prizes for your answer .... !
