Imagine trying to make sense of the universe before telescopes were even invented. Jim al-Khalili reveals how scholars from the Islamic world played a crucial role in astronomy and navigation, influencing later astronomers in the renaissance.
In this episode of Science in the Golden Age, we examine ancient maps dating back to the 9th century at Istanbul's Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam.
In the Qatari desert, Ali Sultan al-Hajri, a businessman and Bedouin, shows how the moon and stars have played a crucial role in navigation and timekeeping for centuries.
Going through an extensive collection of astrolabes - versatile scientific instruments that could be considered as the 'computers of their day,' we get a rare chance to see the inner workings of this complex device as one of the most elaborate astrolabes at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is taken apart.
Moving from ancient astronomy to the most cutting edge developments in space science, we examine the life of al-Tusi, a great astronomer whose work influenced later astronomers including Copernicus, the renaissance scientist who formulated the model of the universe that placed the sun at the centre and the planets rotating around it.
In this episode we also discover how the Persian astronomer al-Biruni devised an ingenious method for calculating the circumference of the earth, which allowed him to come up with an incredibly accurate estimate, within one percent of the accurate value we know today.

Well, the whole series of "Science in a Golden Age" has been remarkable and highly enlightening. It has changed my perception of that glorious period of advancement for good. A huge thanks to Al Jazeera and Professor Jamal Khalili for their humongous effort. BTW, what is that app called Mr. Khalili used to detect stars at 4.30-5.15 ??

The Islamic world was the center of science, progress and civilized life during the middle ages. While Europeans were living in huts and bathing once a year, the caliphates were in full bloom. That time is long over though. Every culture has it's day, and the Muslim world has a long way to go to get back to the top. China is taking its place back from the West.

Islamic contribution in astronomy is one of the most interesting things in The History of Astronomy. Mualim people where like a brige between ancient and modern world. This is the beauty of The Golden Age of Islam. It woud be nice that we see it today, for example, in the form of a large radio-astronomy project which could give contributions to other similar projects all around the world like PTA. If you properly understand the holy Qur'an then you come to know the existence of the living creatures beyond the earth (ch.24:41) and in the holy Qur'an there are some verses talking about the solar system, galaxy,Milky way etc.

ALLAH states that the calendar is based on the Earth’s orbit and the orbit of the Moon as in Section 9/36, and more clearly in Scripture, which means:
يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الأهِلَّةِ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ
وَالْحَجِّ وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوْاْ الْبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا وَلَـكِنَّ
الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَىوَأْتُواْ الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
2/189. They ask you about hilal, and say,”That is the determination
of time for humans and the Hajj, and there is no good that you went to
the houses (calendar) from behind, but it is good who realize. Go to
the home through the doors. Aware to ALLAH hope you win.
الْحَجُّ أَشْهُرٌ
مَّعْلُومَاتٌ فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ الْحَجَّ فَلاَ رَفَثَ

then no longer sexual intercourse, and no transgression is also no contention
in the Hajj. Whatever you do out of kindness, ALLAH knows. And Pour, the good

Hilal is the new moon or crescent moon that time determined ALLAH 12 times in one year, stated in Ayaah 10/5 and 9/36. That is what should be the basis of the calendar. During the 12 months that have four months where prohibited time shall apply to Hajj who undertakes. These obligations are discussed at a later time, God willing. But the purpose of Ayaah 2/189 was able to note that someone should not go to the houses from behind but let come home from the doors, and no one sound that enters the house from the back which does not have the door. But it is ALLAH mentioned in Scripture, though it seems reasonable and ordinary course, was to go or enter the month of every year should from Hilal Months stated at the ayaah 2/189 itself.
Let start a new month at the time Hilal Month began in the western horizon in the evening in effect at Qamariah calendar, but people using the season calendar disregard Hilal Month even they often start the new moon at the time the Moon was full. This is stated by ALLAH as come home from behind without the door, and in Ayaah 9/37 expressed as an increase in disbelief.
In hindusim we use such calendar so much based on moon, even our hindu calendar can predict lunar eclipse and solar eclipse..

Al Beiruni conducted the measurement from the top of the edge of Potohar plateau at the fort named Nandana (Pakistan). The difficult journey to the ruins I may try once again if a good company is available.
Islamic Calendar is Better Than Gregorian Calendar
Lunar Year Calendar begins from Solar eclips with the knowledge that there must the Hilal(crescenct) of the Moon in the afternoon on the western horizon. If the date of first Muharram, the first month, to coincide with the date of March 21 or 22 September in the 20th century AD, a full lunar eclipse would occur at a particular spot on Earth’s equator. This has indeed been effective on March 21, 1901 where Umbra time or full eclipse occurs. Then the first of Muharram record on March 20, 1935 and dated March 19, 1969, at that time there was not full Penumbra or eclipse in Central Sumatra, specifically in Bukit Tinggi, and it also became evident that the Earth in oval orbit around the Sun through zigzag lines or strolled into north and south ecliptic line after the flood of Noah until now.
That’s why a full line of Umbra eclipse on December 23 to June 21 curved to the north of the surface of the Earth, because at that time the earth moving to the south of the ecliptic of the Sun, and then the moo’s hadow was moving northward. Conversely, if the eclipse was effective on June 22 until 22 December, Umbra looks curved toward the south as the shadow of the Moon because the Earth at that time moves to the north.
Solar eclipse on 21, 20, 19 March had been used for making a nuclear Calendar for 100 years Hijri and AD, published and distributed to the public. By calculating the orbit of the Earth and the Moon’s orbit as the above.
1. Ramadan has 29 days but 30 days in the third year, or as listed in below.
2. One year Qamariah consists of 354 days but 355 days in the third year.

The real climatic changes affect the social and economic population that inhabit the Temperature Zone, then the Egyptians who first made the change of seasons for the agricultural calendar schedule that time, marked by the star Sirius rising along with the Sun in the eastern horizon. According to information we find, the same thing also applies to the Mayans in Mexico, since approximately 580 years before Christ.
When Julius Caesar was in Egypt, he can learn a calendar season, and with the help of a Greek astronomer named SOSIGENES, then changed the tradition of the Romans, who was using the calendar seasons Qamariah July in exchange for the honor of Caesar. He was born in 116 BC and died in 44 BC, while the calendar season began legalized in the year 45 BC, one year before his death.
