I don't see how it can be considered underrated. I think SB has a strong reputation for both quality of life and a desirable tourist destination. I've lived there and no its many appealing qualities. But the touristy aspect of it has always been a bit of a drag for locals who tend to prefer a more mellow lifestyle that's authentic instead of hyped by the tourist industry.

Both sides of my family were born and raised there and we all went to the Old Mission for Mass. I left Santa Barbara when I was 8 when my family moved to Texas. For those interested, there are Tarahumara Indians from Chihuahua, chihuahua, Mexico that has lived in Santa Barbara for a very long time. I am 13 percent Tarahumara Indian after my DNA test came out. I found out that we are called, The Footrunners who ran marathons wearing just sandals. I have been studying my family history this past two years. I am proud of my history though as my family on both sides, has served in the U.S. military for over 5 generations.

I always appreciate it the finer things in life plus the Court house and Old Oak Tree. I’m glad it now on the Map for visitors to see and explore other places. Now I live in Las Vegas for 16 years.
I lived there in 67 and 68 as a little boy. The house was demolished and the street, olive, was made into a shopping mall. I had my picture taken with sandy Kofax when the Los Angeles dodgers had their training camp there.. I would love to live there again.
Been to Santa Barbara and I love the Mission! Wish I could of explored more but was there just passing through but got a glimpse of the beauty of the homes, architecture and beach side location! Simply amazing.
I recommend going back and sitting through a Mass. It's very old schooled just like I remembered it when I was young. (My family is from Santa Barbara.)
While it looks like a beautiful coastal city, it's a CA dream - but only for the rich, sadly, who can afford those kinds of humongous homes with swimming pools, despite the water problems in thie area.
This is a bit deceptive, Santa Barbara was not always a Spanish town, prior to the earthquake it’s “downtown” looked was similar to most American downtowns at the time, after the earthquake destroyed much of what was Santa Barbara a group of socialite’s formed a coalition and petitioned for a uniform Spanish style (so much more to this and very interesting). Santa barbara was and continues to be a place where wealthy and international travelers come, although back then it was more of a health destination, known as a place with climate that could cure asthma, allergies and a slough of other ailments.
I spent a couple years in Santa Barbara and I was in an Army Reserve unit that mobilized from there. Man, I love that place. My favorite place in California. I have had so much fun in that town. Lots of beautiful women.

In the 12th century, the relics of Saint Barbara were brought from Constantinople to the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv, where they were kept until the 1930s, when they were transferred to St. Volodymyr's Cathedral in the same city. In November 2012, Patriarch Filaret of The Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchate transferred a small part of St. Barbara's relics to St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Bloomingdale, Illinois.
While I’m glad that CBS cited the Chumash peoples being in the area for hundreds of years before, it should have been noted that they are still around and that the Spanish likely forced them to build their buildings.

Which is why the white nationalists in the country are so worked up, fearful of losing "their country" to a "replacement" population when in fact THEY are the replacements of indigenous populations. Just like Trumpists: charging election fraud against others when they are the ones engaged in a despicable attempt to steal the election delegitimize the Biden administration and perpetuate their toxic form of cultural wars.

When the war happened, the US won it easily and agreed to pay Mexico at least $15 million in the peace treaty. Santa Barbara is part of California history that participated in imminent domain Jim Crow segregation and redlining. Conveniently they did not introduce that part of history. Santa Barbara also was a sundown town along with Ojai and Simi valley ( those two still are though)

UCSB is a plague to our beautiful town. It keeps expanding without adequate housing and a large percentage of its graduates never leave driving rents out of reach for the locals who’s families have lived here for generations.
You're right about this whitewashed monument to slavery, but I'm not sure what Fresno has to do with it. There were many missions along the California coast (Fresno is not on the coast) that were part of the same Spanish Catholic crimes against indigenous populations, wiping out their culture and enslaving them in the name of "civilizing" them.
The story forgot to mention UC Santa Barbara with it's 6 Nobel Laureates. It's ranked top 5 public universities by US News. Santa Barbara has it all.

All the California Missions make great day trips. I've been to seven of them. Well worth the time & it makes for quite a history lesson.
