      @@choppersports Pre clear coat GM paints of the '80s and '90s were notorious for failing and peeling especially on the horizontal surfaces, and how often it was washed was irrelevant. In fact, washing it may have made it peel even faster. Certain colors were worse than others, such as grays, silvers, and dark green. I had a dark green Celebrity as a work car, and after only about five years the weather exposed paint surfaces had oxidized so badly you had to look in the door jams or the underside of the hood or trunk lid to know what color it was supposed to be. For a work car I didn't care, though. It was kind of nice not having to worry about washing it or it getting a scratch.

      Yep. Loved it. Z24s and Sunbird GTs. Almost all of the W bodies.
      In the 80s it meant you were someone. Because either you were poor and had a buzzy four cylinder K car or A body...
      .....or you were really poor and had a 1970s V8 B body or G body or LTD or something (like Uncle Buck’s 1975 Mercury Grand Marquis) with exhaust leaks and no compression turning fuel into noise and overheating coolant without the side effects of power.
      No. V8 sports cars and muscle cars were unattainable to most people so if you had a car with a V6, you’d made it... and that was the sound that told everyone that you did.

      The 60 degree 2.8L sounds a lot better than a 45 degree V6, including the 4.3L. I have a 1993 S-10 truck with a 2.8. I put a real dual exhaust on it, with resonators and no mufflers, and it sounds almost like a V8, while the larger more powerful 4.3L V6, which is actually a 5.7L V8 with 2 cylinders missing, just sounds flat.

      We had similar cars. All these Chevys were pretty looking garbage though. My first brand new car when I was 18 was a blue '88 Beretta GT, loved looking at it and it drew alot of attention until they became kind of ubiquitous/popular shortly after I bought it, but the damn thing was a piece of shit (needed a new rack and pinion pretty early on, full exhaust rusted out, rear drums only lasted about 20k, A/C never worked right even after multiple trips to the dealer, had the door handle break off in my hand once and it wasn't even in the winter, probably more that I can't remember). Then my mother bought a brand new grey '88 Cavalier base model coupe right after me and the bottoms of both doors were completely rusted out when the car was 4-5 years old, not to mention it went through 2 alternators, 1 muffler, and needed wiring work on the reverse lights because they quit working, all before it was even paid off smh. Hope quality has improved since I just took a gamble and leased my wife a new '21 Blazer, the first Chevy in my household in 30 years (since my Beretta).

    The Beretta was extremely unique back in the day. Not only was The Styling pretty interesting, the sheer number of different models and trim levels was nothing short of impressive. You can get a base model, GT, GTU, Indy Pacecar, GTZ or Z26. The same goes for colors. There was a literal plethora of color options available throughout the nine-year run of the Beretta. It still has a pretty decent following, even today. In fact, we will be hosting our annual Beretta Fest in June. Every year since 1997, the Beretta Community has chosen a different location throughout the country or the annual event. This year will be Rapid City South Dakota. I think it's pretty amazing that this long since forgotten car still has such a devoted following as to drive all over the country just to see each other and the cars every year.

    • @joec1774
      @joec1774 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Def agree, and great points, though in fairness, that variety of trim lines was over the course of the run and not in a single model year per se. Until I watched one of these retro reviews of the Corsica though, I didnt realize this L platform was J derived... now THAT is impressive.

    • @dante04srt
      @dante04srt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joec1774 you're right about the trim levels over different model years, but you're still talking about the same generation run. Every single fender from any year Beretta will bolt on to any other year Beretta. All of the trim little options can be interchanged between years as it is the exact same platform and was never changed or altered in any significant way throughout its production run. That kind of in and of itself is pretty impressive. Not too many vehicles go nine consecutive years on the exact same platform.

    Sold for a Chevrolet dealer in NYC back and got one of the first Berettas as a demo in the NY metro area. Everyone was asking what was it? Pretty cool car for its time. First batch of cars had a problem with the rear speakers remaining attached. You would cranking some tunes and all of a sudden thud...speakers would fall into the trunk. They did a quick fix on that! Had a few of them including a GTU which was really sharp. Also had some Corsica’s too.

      Only because of the depreciation.. which means that poor people buy them and don’t take care of them.
      And the depreciation is only because of how easy they were to buy new and how many were leases and rentals which flooded the used market after 2 years.
      They had a head gasket failure rate that Subaru would dream of. A transmission failure rate that Ram would dream of. A resistance to rust that Toyota would dream of. And peeling paint not quite as bad as Hondas that are 20 years newer. All vehicles that last a long time and keep their value.
      But head gasket blows at 200,000 miles. “Not worth it” to fix. Off to the scrapper it goes.

    Amazed at how well 2 door cars sold back in the day, this Beretta was kind of 1 step up from the Cavalier, yet I kind of consider both of them disposable. This was the era when your car fell apart around that 100,000 mile mark, your 5 digit odometer indicated your doom. Yet mysteriously your Japanese car at 100,000 miles still looked great, felt tight as a drum, so you proceeded to drive it another 100,000 miles because nothing ever went wrong. Also telling is your Japanese car was much more likely to have a 6 digit odometer.

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh..... no.
      These all had six digit odometers.
      Five digits were from before 1980 where the cars indeed were scrapped before 100,000 miles and if it miraculously went over there would be absolutely no doubt that the car didn’t have only 20,000 miles.
      The Japanese cars rusted. Oh.. they rusted so bad. Maybe in California they lasted a long time? But anywhere it snowed they literally dissolved by 100,000 miles.
