  • As the witching hour of the unBetter Bus Network's implementation arrived, I took a ride on the last northbound route 3 to service both the Omni Terminal and the 163rd Street Mall area up in North Miami Beach (the timepoint is formally known as the 167th Street Terminal).
Because of the highly uncertain situation with the 11 remaining 1st Gen NABI 40LFW coaches, which has been expected to be retired on this date (the 5% service reduction of the unBetter Bus Network is more than enough to render these coaches, plus the 4 remaining 2nd Gen hybrids, surplus to requirements), and given the longstanding practices of Northeast Division to assign them to Owl runs, I knew that 4:10am on November 13th was the absolute latest one could run. I was right...in fact, I had my choice of two, as while 06110 was on the 4:10x route 3, 06141 was also working the 4:10x northbound 77.
Despite having ridden and recorded 06110 on Friday on the 277 (my last ride on that route...for now...), I opted to repeat with 06110 because the 3 is a slightly longer ride than the direct 77, so it would finish its run later, thus I could be the last passenger to get off. If you wanna make history you gotta use your noodle, lol. As we found out later, the classic NABIs indeed survived the implementation of the unBBN, getting the destination sign update at the 11th hour, while buses in the contingency fleet received the update right at the pumpkin hour, LOL2023. If the experience from 1986 is any indication, there will be some service restorations very soon and we'll need the extra equipment.
The MDT system officially "flipped" to the unBBN changes and cutbacks at 3am, so between 3 and 5am is the awkward transition period where buses on the old schedule are operating alongside buses of the new schedule. So 06110 operated the old alignment, while other buses, including a 21100 series coach that was running on the new schedule just 10 minutes in front of it, were operating over the new route 3 alignment that runs strictly on Biscayne Boulevard, omitting the Omni and 167th Street Terminal deviations. Likewise, on Miami Beach, the final route S buses intermingled with the first route 14, 20 and 100 buses.
No thanks to my water heater bursting on Sunday evening, leaving me unable to go to work, I had to start my journey from home, so you'll see that in the beginning. The route 3 Operator is a good friend of mine and drove the old gal with utmost professionalism. Despite a bus being only 10 minutes ahead at 4 in the morning, we still kept at least 10 onboard most of the trip, a testament to how important and busy route 3 is.
Documentation of what happened after this video will come soon (I took the 100 all the way down the Beach). Stay tuned, and enjoy this one!
