That's why they were so great. They were shallow. They became a shambles. But they took themselves and Manchester to the top. The millennium Glastonbury
They changed the whole Manchester scene along with The Inspirals and The Stone Roses. I've never seen a bad gig. Couldn't give shit what they are on. It's their business. X
This is the year before the fences went up. We were up on the hill watching this shambles, looking and feeling equally 'spent' and shambolic. it was fucking amazing and i've never seen so many people in one place, in all my days. 120k tickets? There must have been 200k people just watching the Pyramid Stage - coming down from Chemical Brothers the night before, waiting for Bowie to see us home. Rolf Harris was on at some point, but let's leave that one...
Yes, I can explain. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Bez brought a manic energy to the band, and live, that energy was totally infectious to the audience. The Mondays didn't give a toss about quality of musicianship or fancy song structures. They were all about feel, groove, passion and, yes, energy. Subsequently Bez was as important to the band as any other member. He's a lovely feller as well. tells a great story (read his book 'Freaky Dancing') and for me and many, deserves his spot as an icon of a crazy era.
the happy mondays to me symbolise the early 90's. the drug culture, the not giving a fuck other than getting wasted n having a good time. ppl may slate them n their performances. but they are the early 90's.
Saw them support Oasis at the Reebok stadium and I think they were a hard act to follow. I've followed thenm from the beginning. Shaun came in the Brunswick in iddleyon and Robbie Malone asked Shau to sign his wall as he lived the back to. He had had 30odd valium and spelt his name wrong. But that's what you expect. They are legends. Great musicians. Rosetta has a great voice. Sexy as well. Xx
@@basedsouljah Thanks for your answer, but would that work since the audio track in this video still is simple mono? I was hoping to find an upload of this very gig somewhere in stereo (you easily can hear a huge difference especially with headphones)
@@0kurgan1 Ahhhh I didn't even notice until you brought that up! Hmm... there's gotta be some way to stereo this up. I'll even take it into FL Studio and mess around with it and see if i can engineer it haha. I'll keep you posted! God knows I'm back here listening to this almost daily 😁
@@basedsouljah There might be a stereo original since it’s a recording from the BBC 🤔 However, I love this version of one of my all time favourite songs
OOh, were this lot there in 2000? Didn't know. It's the only year I went - got in free, stayed in the travellers field. Didn't see any of the bands. Spent most of the time at my mates raves in the travellers field. It was a great vibe. Won't go back now it's gone corporate.
yea 20 past six on the sunday ,packed ,we were parked just off the travellers field in a blue transit by the reggae system ,we were by the van most days brilliant times ,sadly like the big sites/free festivals gone from the uk forever
No, it was black grape who were then joined by the rest of the happy Mondays. It was the first time Ryder was allowed to perform as/with the Mondays since Factory imploded. A copyright or something had run out and they performed together.
Yeah, it was more a Black Grape performing Happy Mondays tunes kind of show. I expected them to launch into "Kelly's heroes" or "In the name of the father" at any time.
The instrumental content of this band is the only thing that saves the live show. Shame really. Brilliant song, brilliant vibe. Crap singer. He's got more hits than me though... He did something right, once
Still one of my favourite gigs of all time! So funny and chaotic. Perfect Glastonbury band, on in the afternoon before Bowie.
All about the chaos. 😂
For such a train wreck, this is epic!!!!!
Loved every minute of it!
An absolute epic mess! Wish I was there!
That's why they were so great. They were shallow. They became a shambles. But they took themselves and Manchester to the top. The millennium Glastonbury
Absolute legends never forget that for the music and times they gave us back in the 90s and the kaos they brought

Shaun n rowetta out their nuts fallin out n that 😂😂😂😂😂
1:36 The only key that Shaun can hit is a key of Mandy, ffs

I don’t even remember the nineties 😂
Lucky the band can play their instruments!!
An unbridled chaotic mess. Just fantastic !!!
that was a very good year.. we all had a good few weeks after that.. glastonbury is a special place
OMG!!! This is horrible, but I’m so jealous that I wasn’t there. That looks awesome!!!
"yer twisting my melon, man". .. Perfect.

Out of there bins, i love it
This is so bad it makes it brilliant
3:50 Rowetta going "You're the best" and Bez turning around on cue.
"You're the Bez."
0:18 Knew we were in for a shitshow after Shaun slurred that 'Call the focken cops'. Lmao
I keep rereading this comment in my head in everyday life and it makes me giggle lmao
they covered eachothers asses lol its so bad its brilliant, legend memories, pity i cant remember much though lol thank you for posting
I was there.What a weekend for what i can remember.Legends x
What a hot mess. Crap and Brilliant at the same time. Long live the Mondays.
My mate said to a landlady in Middleton "you are twisting my melon man" and she barred him. It was hilarious. X

Absolutely Calv.
Well said.
Yeah man. Go and watch the live version of 'Performance', done at Granada TV studio and introduced by their manager Tony Wilson.
Epic!
What a shambles, but it’s gold 😂. Saw them live at Wembley, supporting Oasis in 2000.
Got to love beds eyeballs at the end of the video
its like he's speedballing or something man that looks like some PINPOINT ass pupils good gear back then lmao
this is england!
Grand Buransmo: This is Scotland!
Absolutely hammered
Look at that fucking crowd bouncing goosebumps r whatt !
Absolute Car crash ….. shambolic …. Ryder absolutely out his nut …..
I love it 😂
My eardrums are now bleeding, not an hope in hell he would even pass an X Factor audition with that voice.

I forgot all about the fog machines in the 90s they where wicked in night clubs lol
For fucks sake rowetta you kept that show going, you are the one!!!!step on!!!xxxxxxx
Watching the Mondays is like an awayday with Manchester United in the 70s. Just fucking mayhem.
daylight gigs are not the same,
Hilarious and makes it all the more a classic appearance. Rowetta was fit!!
she still is! i banged her up against the bins at the back of Lidl just last month!
I was on the barrier at this one.
nuff respect
Oot his f in nut! man f in brilliant! drug music man 😁👍

I think this is the one where Shaun spent like 48 hours smoking heroin locked in the luggage cargo of their trailer before this performance
I was there walked past to the travelers camp .car crash cafe
The best
Saw them that summer at Wittness. Totally train wreck
Even Bez looks uncharacteristically unenthused about this and poor Shaun is not only behind, but singing in some completely different key...:/
Everyone is stoned out of their minds!
Who gives a shit? in 2000 this was already 20 years old and everyone was looking to remissness and get stoned.

Any chance to get that particular one in stereo somewhere? Looked for it for ages but no luck so far
High quality? I'm not sure. But you could use one of those "youtubetomp3" websites to convert this video to an Mp3 file in Stereo!

good point. although this was the year Radio 1 and Orange had tents everywhere for the first time
Roweta amazing
Seeing Ryder walk off like that shows how fucked up he was at the time. Glad he's healthy again.
I think I heard the guy in the blue t shirt shout "Wasted!" when Ryder left the stage!
@@timefortea1931 What time in the video?
@@eddyvideostar about 5:10
@@timefortea1931 no, he says "Twisting" as in "Twisting my melon".
This is Step On not Kinky Afro, great piece of footage though.

That's not Happy Mondays. Half the band are missing
🎁
Outta tune!
I was there. Monday's were a bit shambolic, as much as I love them (only two from the original band here if you don't count Rowetta)
This was Happy Mondays and Black Grape together for a one-off.

Should have known what to expect. They were a bunch of drugged up barely talented mancs 😂 The chaos is what made it so great!

Well off key ffs
I wonder what John kongos thinks of this cover
In indonesia we called it "kebotian"
BBC Choice ... ;)
Lol agree best car crash ever
Shambles
This is A Propper ....Band......
I'm going to give Gaz Whelan and the keyboard player credit for their performance on this one. Shaun Ryder? Yeah, not so much...
Call the cops
She saved you big nose
Wow that was bad!
2000?? Think you'll find it was 1990
No, it was 2000.
Sounds like shit here but great song on the recording. Still stands up after 33 years. Or 52 years if you're into Kongos' version.
Don’t like the key the band is playing in ? Sean has others you can try…
Se les va el p3do!! no saben ni en que parte van
Awesome band work , apart from lead singer..wtf is wrong with him ? too much snow stuck up his nose ?
theres a legend thats said he locked himself in the luggage cargo of his trailer smoking heroin for 48 hours straight before this one
Not knocking Mr ryder but has such a poor singer ever fronted such a great band.
I would honestly love to discuss this and try and legit think of another band hahah
Mark E Smith may have been a worse singer, the Fall were far superior much as I love the mondays
The instrumental content of this band is the only thing that saves the live show. Shame really. Brilliant song, brilliant vibe. Crap singer.

Wow this was TERRIBLE
Wow...that is probably the worst vocals I've ever heard...not even close to being in the right key 😂
Wow, terrible
Ah yes, back when Glastonbury was a real festival and not the pretentious crap its turned into now.
It's known as Twatstonbury now. Middle class trust fund kids festival. F'ckin shyte.
