As a Braves Fan who lived this run in 1991 and despite coming up short it's still the Best World Series I've seen. I love the Video and have watched it back many times since.
I remember getting to stay up extra late to be able to watch this game and jumping up and down on the couch when the twins won. It’s really fun to look back at a life memory like that and enjoy it. Thank you for putting this together and sharing it.
"...and we'll see ya tomorrow night". Wow. That game 6 ending still gives me the chills. I was watching this game with my parents and grandparents. Kirby was my grandfather's favorite player. He went absolutely nuts when that ball went out.

Attending college in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the time, me and a couple of friends were visiting a tiny town coastal town smack dab between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, I reckon it was during the span of the last 4 games of this series happening. There were very few bars in the area of as-yet-"undiscovered" small towns, we spent our nights at one particular bar where Jasso the bartender informed us that their satellite dish, one of the old big ones, couldn't move, the motor had broken down a couple of days before and the technician hadn't arrived yet, just my typical luck. As CBS was not on that particular satellite, Jasso scanned the transponders and CNN turned out to be the most useful station, updating game info every 10-15 minutes with text on the bottom of the screen. It felt like every night, every time they showed the score and inning, my friends and I turned to look at each other and went "Oh My GOD!" We were missing out on the best Series since '75 and probably ever, but we did experience, it in a very limited way via news ticker and nothing else, in a truly special, magical environment. BTW, as the Twins had already won in '87 (and I was rooting for them then), this time I was going for the Braves. Although just barely. Almost subconsciously even, leaning just an inch in that direction. I really liked... no, strike that, I LOVED... Glavine's breakout season.
Greatest World Series of my lifetime. As Marie Pavlov says below: all games but Game 5 decided by 3 runs or less, Games 3, 6 and 7 went extra innings, and the game seven was truly epic.
I look down through comments below and the many debates about whether or not this World Series was the best of all time and see many legitimate arguments as to why was not and why others were. That is the essence of the love of baseball fandom. However, I will stand by the argument that Game 7 of this WS was without question the most amazing and gutsiest pitching performances by two pitchers EVER in the highest of staked games. Today's baseball mentality will never see the likes of such again. And being a diehard Braves fan for over 40 years, I will be the first to admit that Jack Morris's performance was the stuff that baseball dreams are made of. John Smoltz held his own for as long as he could, but Jack Morris was a baseball god that night. When one truly considers ALL the factors that two teams, that were the worst teams in baseball in 1990 and both became the best teams in baseball a year later...and all the drama of the series...ending with clearly the most amazingly pitched Game 7...there is truly a valid basis for calling this the best World Series of all time...this far. Just my opinion.
Tawnku Imi-Uru I wonder whether later in his career, Cox would have stayed with Smoltz as long as Kelly stayed with Morris. Because Smoltz truly matched Morris pitch for pitch in that Game 7, the difference was that Smoltz was taken out when he got into the same jam that Morris had just pitched out of.
It is quite unfortunate though that despite the Braves’ division and playoff dominance, they only managed to win 1 title (out of 5 appearances, 1995) albeit in a strike shortened season.
@@RYMAN1321 are you saying 1995 was the strike shortened season? cause it wasn’t. 1994 was. But yes. The Braves won it in 1995. Also, their starting pitching rotation was unreal.
@@jayNicks10 Um, the strike cut off the 1994 season yes, but it carried over into 1995. The season didn't begin until April 2, 1995. Both the Braves (90-54) and Indians (100-54) only played a combined 144 games instead of the usual 162.
Clarence Parker III I think the backdrop of 9/11 added a tremendous layer of emotional depth to the 01 WS that may factor into some people's opinions of this debate...including my own. For a while I had the 01 WS as the greatest ever. But the truth is games 1 and 6 were VERY lopsided and game 2 while close for 7 innings before Matt Williams hit a 3 run HR off Pettitte, wasn't quite a classic either. Randy Johnson would have won 1-0 even without that shot. So I think the idea is that the 91 WS was more closely contested through all 7 games than 01. And games 3 and 4 from 91 closely mirror games 4 and 5 from 01. The team that ultimately lost the series winning 2 dramatic walk offs in a row to get them back in it and help make them likely to win the series before going back on the road where they would ultimately lose in heartbreaking fashion in game 7.
This is the greatest World Series of all time(!). I was a Braves fan, but by the end of this gripping contest, I honestly couldn't decide which team truly deserved the title more(!). When Gagne's 3-run HR in Game 1 proudly affirmed the Twins' presence to all suddenly-worrying Braves fans, we all knew this would be a Series for the books, despite the Braves' loud double-digit victory in Game 5(!). Perhaps the Twins deserved the ultimate win they really earned, but still, many sports-writers and fans rank the 1991 MLB World Series as one of the greatest men's athletic contests of all time, lumping it with other 'trophies' (e.g., 1992 Duke-Kentucky NCAA tourney-thriller, 1982 soccer World Cup, Super Bowl LII [NFL], Ali-Frazier [boxing])! I became a secret/silent Twins fan after this Series and purchased a Kirby Puckett baseball-card. This is why sports is so...delicious. Thanks for posting this(!). God bless...
Love the enthusiasm of this comment. Btw one question. You mentioned the 82 World Cup. Was that referring to the Final? The entire tournament? I'm a little hazy on that one so that was the only sporting even that did not evoke a distinctive image in my head, which made me curious.
Such an epic series when you consider the Twins were so close to going up 3-0 or 3-1 only to lose game 5 in a rout and suddenly the Twins find themselves on the brink after a rout. Kirby accounts for all 4 of the runs in 6 plus a spectacular catch, and game 7 could have gone either way in regulation but key defensives stands in almost every inning. Morris accounts for all 30 outs for the Twins and Gladden accounts for the first and final run of the series. TK said it best after game 6. Storybook series.
I was not yet a baseball fan (I think I was 8) when this series happened but I feel like there are a lot of similarities between this and the 2001 World Series. The home team won all 7 games, there were back to back games in the middle of the series where the team trailing 2-0 won incredibly dramatic, epic games that created the feeling that they were a team of destiny en route to going up 3-2, however that team was in for a rude awakening when going back on the road for games 6 and 7 where the series ended in dramatic, walk off fashion and everyone believes the team that lost game 7 had an absolutely golden opportunity and should have won. Both series threw the absolute kitchen sink at baseball fans. Perhaps the main difference in the series was Arizona really dominating games 1, 2 and 6. The 91 series only had 1 game where one team really put some distance between them and their opponents like that, which was game 5. But I think other than that, and all the raw, post-9/11 emotions being spilled into the 2001 series and the unique double worst-to-first storyline draped over the '91 series, they are remarkably similar.
Thrilled to see this news come over the teletype on USS ATLANTA while on deployment. Missed the series but won 100 dollars off some southern kid onboard.
Greatest World Series ever ever !!! #2- Mets v Red Sox, 86. #3 - Reds v Red Sox, 75. The 86 playoff were probably the best overall. But the 91 Series was unlike any other. SPECTACULAR FROM START TO FINISH.
First pitch too. Some say Glavine went back out to the mound upset that his offense failed to take the lead in the top of the 8th and his emotions got the best of him there.
The 8th inning could’ve been worse for Glavine as he gave up another hit and balked. But he quickly settled back down and retired the rest. Once again his offense didn’t help him. Though you gotta give credit to Tapani and Aguilera.
The Twins normally celebrate anything with a losing record since the Pohlad sons own the team but are only in it for profit. Since King Carl died, the team has spiraled down from at least being competitive in the division to simply being a source of immense profit for the Pohlad sons. Winning is not a meaningful consideration.
That's one of the toughest for me to decide. I am torn, I could see it either way. It's like I can't see definite proof that Hrbek deliberately pulled him off the bag, but it sure looks very suspicious. Maybe he did a good job of making it look like an accident. If they had replay for this call I think it would have taken forever lol.
billny33 He capitalized on the situation. If Gant comes in clean theres nothing Hrbek can do. But Gant came in a little hard and Kent capitalized, especially at the end. Trust me, we know Herbie around here. The guy was a lot of things. Easy to knock back isn't one of them. Think if Hrbek had wanted so hold that spot on the bag, like waiting for a close throw. Gant would have bounced off him.
With the exception of the Hrbek vs. Gant play & calling a swing & miss on Pendleton a Foul Tip it was a very well umpired series. The Pendleton Play I'm referring to was the pitch before his Double that Lonnie Smith was decoyed that was called a Foul Tip which kept his at-bat alive. Looked like he swung & missed completely.
billny33 If it was a foul tip it was the correct call because the ball did hit the dirt. If it was a swing & miss, it should have been Pendleton out because Lonnie Smith was on 1st with nobody out so the Uncaught 3rd Strike rule would not apply in that situation.
Yeah, what I meant was, it's almost impossible for anyone to tell whether or not Pendleton made contact with the ball, even with all those slo-mo replays. If I can't tell what the right call was, I can't tell the umpire that he got it wrong.
I always found it interesting that during the existence of the Metrodome, the Twins NEVER won a postseason game away from their ballpark and NEVER lost a game played in it. Play the '87 and '91 World Series at a neutral site and the Twins would STILL be looking for their first title. I doubt they would have gotten beyond the LCS's. Thank God that bush-league, pinball machine of a venue is gone. The Twins new park seems to be a really nice venue.
Not entirely true. Correct for World Series games but LCS and Division Series the Twins lost home games and won road games like normal teams. Still remarkable how that played out though.
@@billny33 I stand corrected. Thanks. I'm operating from memory of events from 35 years ago, so I may be a little hazy. Along a similar line, I would love to see MLB force Tampa to play in a suitable venue and force the NY Yankees to move the entirety of the right field and right-center stands to adult-sized specifications. A 280 foot pop fly should be an out...it is in high school.
I look at all the comments remembering the 1991 series and I feel I missed out on a national party. For me, the cherry on top was when a _little 7-year old girl_ sang the national anthem in game 7, which melted America's collective heart. That just doesn't happen anymore. Why'd I have to be born in 1992?
webstedge1099 i was born in 1983 but did not become a baseball fan until 1994. I missed out on this and Toronto beating Atlanta and Joe Carter's HR in 93, but I still enjoyed learning about it as history even if its not as great as seeing it live. Every fan will get their collection of moments.
I was born in September of '92 and I like to think of 1991 as my conception year (it wasn't until that week between Christmas and New Year's) and I was 2 when the strike cancelled the '94 series. I am hoping that in the future we will get another World Series that can be right up there with, or maybe even top 1991 as one of the best WS ever. What I did see live was when the Diamondbacks stopped the Yankees from winning 4 in a row and spoiled their 9/11 tribute playoff run. That one will have a special place in my heart as one of my worst sports-watching moments. I think Mariano singlehandedly cost NY the championship (although the Snakes did win 3 games by a combined 28-3 and just like 87 and 1991, 2001 had home teams go 7-0.) I also saw when Matt Harvey almost pitched a CG shutout only to completely fall apart at the end. I lived through, but didn't watch on TV, when both Sox teams ended a combined 174-year title drought by sweeping two WS in a row, and when the Yankees celebrated a championship in their first year of their new stadium.
webstedge1099 the Diamondback loss was nothing short of soul-crushing. I'm def with you there. You hinted at the White Sox breaking their own 88 yr curse in 2005. How bizarre is it that the general public just shrugged their shoulders and said "meh" at a title for the long starving White Sox franchise?
I really can't speak about the 2005 White Sox, I like how their series with the Astros was one of the closer ones where it just went the same way 4 times in a row. 2004 wasn't really that bad in hindsight, as Boston rode an unlikely 8-game win streak straight to the Promised Land before the Yankees and Cardinals knew what was going on, making for a great storyline. But I still cannot look at pictures of the Arizona players dancing on the field. What's crazy is that Arizona (never mind the fact that they literally came out of nowhere to win the championship and have done next to nothing since) wound end up being the first in a string of 6 different champions in 6 years, and 7 different teams in 8 years. About having the little kid singing the national anthem, I wish something like that would happen again. It also happened in 1996 when an 8-year old sang the anthem in game 6 at yankee stadium.
webstedge1099 the Red Sox beating the Yanks in 04 crushed me too but it was great for the game I must admit. Their Series win vs St Louis to me was basically an epilogue and nothing more. Game 1 was entertaining but after that it was a very boring World Series other than the fact that the curse was broken. 05 was very exciting all 4 games. I also think the 2011 WS game 6 is about as epic as 1986 WS game 6 and I'm glad I got to witness such an unbelievable death defying comeback. 2016 WS game 7 I think is also something no one will ever forget, the longest cursebreaker of them all. Are you a Yankee fan or did you just get behind them extra strong that year after 9/11? I actually got over that loss by watching the tape of that 9th over and over and over until I was numb to it. Not easy but I think it was the only way. A lot of painful imagery in that postgame celebration from a Yankee standpoint.
@@billny33 TH-cam hadn't been invented yet so perhaps the FBI Warning doesn't apply to streaming of the video content onto a website for viewing (but not for profiting). Sort of like checking out this video from the library. For educational purposes only!
I remember one time me and my dad watched this and my dad gave a point how you look back and watch a team like the Braves in the 90's or how a great team they were people thought they were the team of the 90's. They made the playoffs almost every year and they only won one World Series.
Despite how people debate about Kirby Puckett being in the HOF because he retired early from an eye problem. Looking at the kind of ballplayer he was he is a HOF he was a great ballplayer a five tool player. Granted if it wasn't for the eye conditon he could have played longer and maybee could have gotten 3,000 hits. There's a lot of ballplayers in the HOF who don't have 3,000 hits, 500 home runs, 300 wins, or 3,000 strikeouts.
yeah and shame on Tim McCarver who played in the 60s, certainly had to be following baseball in '57 when the Milwaukee Braves won, he should know better.
As much as I disliked McCarver as a commentator, I'll actually defend him on this one... Even though he said "Braves", I think he actually meant Atlanta, since this was the first time the Braves made the World Series since they moved there.
@@SuperfanDK yes, but it seems like when you hear it over and over he said the first time ever. shouldve said it little differently. on the braves 1991 season tape, ernie johnson sr said, first win since 1958 ws. that makes more sense to me. i know they lost the 1958 WS but meaning they won a game. 1958 just like 1991, the world series played all 7 games
Okay. We get it! They both finished last place in 1990. But it seems like they were both huge underdogs in their respective LCS’s just because of how they were last year. I Love it when “experts” are proven wrong.
I never got why the Twins were considered underdogs against Toronto. Twins went 95-67, Toronto went 91-71. Twins had +124 run differential, Toronto +62. Twins scored almost 100 more runs than the Jays and gave up fewer. I'm not sure about the Jays but I know Minnesota had 7 players from the 87 team on their 91 team.
@@krog21 yeah. Pretty uncommon for the team with the best record in the American League to be underdogs. I think it was partly because the Blue Jays went 8-4 against the Twins during the regular season that year. But much like to why did to the Tigers in 1987, a team that also went 8-4 against the Twins that year, The Twins beat the Blue Jays in just 5 games.
I remember when me and dad watched this and he told that when you look back at the Braves in the 90s you would think for how great a team they were you thought that the Braves were the team of the 90s. The Braves won 5 pennants and only won one World Series in 1995. Instead the Yankees reversed that.
Team of the EARLY 90s. The Yanks, as we know, owned the mid 90s. I'd say San Francisco was the team of the 10s (well 1st half, similar to the Braves of the 90s) but not really sure who the team of the 2000's were. A lot of teams had good 2-3 year runs. Maybe Boston?
people say morris doesnt deserve the hall. he deserves the hall just on this performance alone. 10 inning shutout game 7 most pressure packed world series in hisptiry
I would also argue that the 10 shutout innings were more gutsy than dominant. He had a lot of tough innings in that game that he somehow found a way through. I expected a 10-inning 1-0 game to have a quick pace with a lot of 1-2-3 innings, a lot of strikeouts, and it really wasn't like that when I watched the whole game.
Despite what people say about Kirby Puckett not being a HOF because of short career from the eye condition he had. The way I see it he is a HOF he was a five tool player. He really was a great ballplayer. Granted if it wasn't for the eye condition he had he probably could have played longer and he might have gotten 3,000 hits. But all in all Kirby Puckett is a HOF.
50:00 I wonder if that tomahawk Broom, came from an Indian, or Brave, butial site. Lol Nothing is going to stop Atl now! Woooooo! One win out of two! A simple split. And a Blowout in game 5, that would make Brian DePalma and John Travolta jelous!! And as they say in ATL, reverse the curse. Welcome to the decade of Atlanta, with Turner, TNT, TBS and WCW 4Life
38:00 I usually like the direction and camera choices, on these type of recap vids. They're quite different than the t.v. broadcasts and give us something new. Some of us were at the game, I watfhed on t.v. and newer fans jay not have been born yet! So the makers should never assume we've seen the t.v. broadcast. At around 37:45. We see a batters box view, of a great swing and game tying Homer, from Terry Pendleton but I must have spoke too soo because after he makes contact, we get to see the crowd's reaction, to that important run. Cool. But for some reason, they don't give us any view of the ball's trajectory into the seats!?! That's just crap directing on the play! It's cool to get the view from camera #6 but how about the camera that follows the Baseball itself. There's really no excuse for that. It's not like this video is made live. Lol Do better guys. Lol
Jay Nicks I remember at the time thinking that the celebration seemed understated compared to '87 but then I realized it's just logistics where when you have a walk-off hit that isn't a home run, you get two sub-celebration piles instead of one larger one. One at home plate where the winning run scores and another mob for the player who got the winning hit.
When You Put Your Heart In It by Kenny Rogers. I thought it was way too sappy for this. I guess everything was just cheesy like that in the early 90s. I mean come on, Full House was popular then, right?
Why was Deion Sanders in the stands??? He was on the team that year so why wasn't he playing? I miss those days, Neon Deion , Some people thought he was annoying but I liked him , very talented guy and flashy yet he could back it up.
Braves no shame in Losing this Series. They would be great for 1992, 1995 and 1996 winning 1 of those Series while Twins would not even Make the Playoffs until 2002 with Torii Hunter, Johan Santana, Brad Radke and AJ Pierzynski.

Greatest World Series of all time hands down!
@ 1:01:07 and then there was 1 game 7 of the world series.
PS. I'll agree
This one was great, but I think I would give the edge to the 2001 World Series
The 1975 World Series ranks right up there too.
Great series, but it is kind of crap when neither team can win on the others home field. 2001 would fall into that category as well.
The best world series of all time. No question.
Easily one of the best if not the best World Series' of all time
Probably the best
Thank you for posting this!!
Great series, best game 7 in sports history
No shame for Braves in losing since they would have a dominate 90's. Twins would not even Make the Playoffs until 2002 after this.
Greatest World Series ever ever !!! #2- Mets v Red Sox, 86. #3 - Reds v Red Sox, 75. The 86 playoff were probably the best overall. But the 91 Series was unlike any other. SPECTACULAR FROM START TO FINISH.
My exact thoughts as well. Great taste!
22:46..sums up the corniness of the early 90s! And we love it still today!! LOL
Jack Morris looks like something from Tombstone.
spinner90 Like Wyatt Earp?
He’s a War Horse
@@scottjohnson1640 Yeah or just an extra
Scott Leius off Tom Glavine- I still can't believe that happened
Funny you said that, when I first saw it, I had no idea who Scott Leius was and I know alot about Baseball haha
So many homers at Fulton County Stadium. No wonder they called it the launching pad
So we had the launching pad and the Homer dome. Expect a lotta homeruns.
And there were. 8 for each team.
We're celebrating the 25th anniversary here in the Twin Cities with a 41-64 record!
Blizzard Rivals worst to first???
The Twins normally celebrate anything with a losing record since the Pohlad sons own the team but are only in it for profit. Since King Carl died, the team has spiraled down from at least being competitive in the division to simply being a source of immense profit for the Pohlad sons. Winning is not a meaningful consideration.
2016 wasn't a good year for the Twins
As a lifelong twins fan I can say in all honesty..... 18:17 is when Kent Hrbek starts lying.
That's one of the toughest for me to decide. I am torn, I could see it either way. It's like I can't see definite proof that Hrbek deliberately pulled him off the bag, but it sure looks very suspicious. Maybe he did a good job of making it look like an accident. If they had replay for this call I think it would have taken forever lol.
billny33
He capitalized on the situation.
MNsportsnut the foul tip is tough to really see though. I can't be sure it was the right or wrong call.
billny33 If it was a foul tip it was the correct call because the ball did hit the dirt.
And now Jack Morris will be joining John Smoltz in the Hall of Fame!
Brian Harper was such a legend. There was not one baseball-related thing that he couldn't handle like a professional.
Great video!!! Thanks for posting!!! Twins rule!!!
A lot of painful imagery in that postgame celebration from a Yankee standpoint.
great series. I still have the VHS copy, but no longer have a VCR.
Why has no body noticed, this guy should be in jail. He didn't follow the FBI Warning in the beginning!😂
i had the express written consent of MLB once, but I think I lost it among other bedroom clutter lol.
@@billny33 TH-cam hadn't been invented yet so perhaps the FBI Warning doesn't apply to streaming of the video content onto a website for viewing (but not for profiting). Sort of like checking out this video from the library. For educational purposes only!
jack Morris pitched 10 innings in a game 7 world series and shut out the braves. one of the best pitching performances ever.
I remember one time me and my dad watched this and my dad gave a point how you look back and watch a team like the Braves in the 90's or how a great team they were people thought they were the team of the 90's. They made the playoffs almost every year and they only won one World Series.
Love the music in the 8th inning of game 7
Gene Larkin becomes a hero at 1:15:28!
9:51 great song for a game 1 of a World Series filled with excitement
That 8th inning music is awesome
this was such a fantastic world series

Great World Series a lot of excitement!!
The greatest World Series ever even though I am a braves fan and have been since childhood
I remember having to go to bed because it was late and I couldn't watch the rest of the game.

Why do the Twins have last names on their road jerseys, but not their home ones?
spinner90 So the away crowd knows which player it is. It is assumed the home fans know their teams players by numbers...
@@LeoWhalen1933 Interesting concept. I guess I was focused more on uniform balance.
34:58...not true. The Braves won the World Series in 1957. Just in Milwaukee. But the franchise HAD won a World Series game previously
yeah and shame on Tim McCarver who played in the 60s, certainly had to be following baseball in '57 when the Milwaukee Braves won, he should know better.
I miss those days.
@ 4:49 the so-called lighting the symbolic torch of the world series
Okay.
1:45 chills masterpiece
@@krog21 Boston and NY in the 2000s.
Thank You for putting this up. Had this VHS and wore it out!

Lonnie Smith was the Real Mr. October! He was average at best in the regular season but when he made it to the Post, he went into Overdrive!
people say morris doesnt deserve the hall. he deserves the hall just on this performance alone.
It almost felt like he made the HOF w his Game 6 alone but absolutely, all time great career.

I usually like the direction and camera choices, on these type of recap vids.
Lol
Do better guys. Lol
Man jack morris' windup was intimating.
Idk why but him and Randy johnson look alike
HAHAHAHA who was that guy who jumped like 10 feet in the air at 1:15:59 ? I feel it was either Junior Ortiz or Jarvis Brown.
Jay Nicks No idea who it is but it's hilarious. He looks like he had a trampoline.
kizzeith it was Jarvis Brown. The guy who could have scored the winning run in the 9th. The guy whom Gene Larkin pinch hit for.
