Great video - I'm so glad you made this video to appreciate the intricacies of this phenomenal soundtrack. I just wanted to point one thing out though - A Promise and Unfulfilled are actually both in a minor key. A Promise is in E minor, whereas Unfulfilled is in G minor. The main reasons why the two songs feel so different despite drawing from the same predominant melody are because 1) the tempo of Unfulfilled is much slower and 2) the notes in A Promise are much shorter (mostly staccato), giving off a bouncy, playful feeling, whereas the notes in Unfulfilled are dragged out (legato), giving off a feeling of lasting despair. These are the same reasons why Aerith's theme sounds completely different in Smash compared to in Final Fantasy, and they have nothing to do with the song being in a major vs. minor key (the original version is in D major and the Smash version is in F major). That aside, I liked the video and look forward to more videos like this.

Thanks so much for your kind words and for pointing that out. To be honest, we shopped the script around to a several musician friends of ours, with the examples, and we got a different key each time. We couldn't find literally ANY agreeing transcriptions of the Aerith's Themes and the two FE songs either, so we just kinda had to assume from our research and own ears, haha. We'll keep your insight around for future videos though, so we can hopefully be more accurate (we cant change it now unfortunately because YT got rid of the "replace" button years ago). Thanks again, and really glad to hear you liked the video!

Dimitri is haunted by the past, Edelgard seeks change in the present, and Claude looks forward for a future.

WHY did you have to remind me of this possibly single most heart-wrenching line in the ENTIRE GAME :=:
Excellent video, I wish it was longer - going straight to part 2 after this!

Unfulfilled never hits harder then during Edelgard’s death in Silver Snow. Given the leitmotif is mostly Edelgard’s, her monologue about how she has to die in order for her teacher to win the war, always just crushes me.

      Spoiler for Azure Moon!
It also hits hard in azure moon when Dimitri kills El and that plays

I love that you brought up the parallel between A Promise and Unfulfilled, those two tracks carry so much weight in their respective scenes and do such a great job of emphasizing the core themes of the narrative. Great video!

Thanks, glad you liked it! And yeah, the "A Promise" and "Unfulfilled" composition and uses are just jaw-dropping. That's definitely where our writer got the idea for this whole video miniseries right there!

5:12 That was explained backwards. The BOTTOM number represents what note represents one beat, and the TOP number represents how beats of that note are per measure. That is why you see signatures like 7/8 where there are seven eighth notes per measure, and not 8/7, because there is no such thing as a seventh note.

I always love to see musical analysis of this wonderful game, because it does so many interesting things that are actually part of the narrative. I specially like how various songs connect to each other, like "A promise" and "Unfulfilled". They also do that with other soundtracks, though not as obvious, like one of the pre-timeskip battle themes "Blue skies and a battle" and one of the post-timeskip themes "A battle between heaven and earth"
    Great video!

While all of the music terminology went way over my head, I do always love the focus on leitmotifs in fiction and how they are used to highlight aspects of characterization and story. 3H has an amazing soundtrack and it definitely utilizes music to highlight emotional and impactful moments. One of my favorite musical moments occurs in chapter 13, hunting by daybreak. Chasing daybreak is a wonderful powerful song that perfectly matches the tension and relief at the reunion scene.

The blue lions ending almost made me cry. First the cutscene where Dimitri kills Edelgard, and she's unwilling to give up broke my heart. I always thought there could be have been an ending where they end up as a nice couple, similar to Alm and Celica. Imagine if Alm and Celica fought against each other and one kills the other. Then the song The Edge of Dawn plays, which is the downbeat version of the main theme, then the Night of the Ball song, which reminds us how happy everyone was before the events of the game. Man, it hit me right in the feelings

You actually mixed up the time measure explanation. The top number is what indicates the number of beats per measure, while the bottom note indicates which note gets the beat. 3/4 time has three quarter beats per measure, 6/8 has six eighth note beats per measure, etc.
Otherwise, great video. I absolutely love the music in FE3H and how they constantly reuse certain melodies like the one in Edge of Dawn

I don’t know anything about music so I love stuff like this! Three Houses has some great songs, I should listen to the full ost to get a better feel for it than in game

This is a really nice video, but there is slight distortion/peaking in the audio of this video

    • @ExpUp
      @ExpUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hmm...interesting. Out of curiosity, what were you listening to this on and where did you hear it? Audio was unsurprisingly an issue during this one, and we listened back to it on multiple systems and headphones to make sure it sounded ok. We never really heard any heavy distortion in the final product...

Watching this video again and goddammit why did you have to bring Dorothea and Ferdinand into this 😭😭 making me sob all over again. I never made the mistake of leaving anyone unrecruited after that line in my first playthrough
I kinda wanna try recruiting only the units I’m gonna use but I still haven’t done that and I’m on my, like, 11th playthrough lol. I can’t kill my babies and I don’t wanna miss the paralogues either 🥲
