  • Concert by Bootsy Collins and his Rubber Band, featuring Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley from the James Brown band. The concert was recorded live in Houston in 1976, the same night of the Mothership Connection concert film. Definetly the best concert by Bootsy Collins on youtube so far.

    13:56 Another Point of View

Who on earth would take the time to "dislike" this video? Who thinks this is not some of the most incredible music ever captured??? Everything about it is insane. The horns, the rhythm section, the singers, the lyrics, the arrangements, the solos, the repertoire, the "show"... actually unbelievable.

If you were a musician that learned to play in the 70's, it was musically impossible to be in a band that was not tight...I grew up in Philly, so we had Instant Funk, Breakwater, Back of the Bus, Heavy Weather, Phoenix, MFSB, Fat Larry's Band, Brutus...et Al. But OHIO was crankin' out stone killers: Bootsy, Zapp, Heatwave, Ohio Players, Lakeside, DeBarge...competition Forced you to get in the basement and not come out til you could funk with the best of em...LONG LIVE DA FUNK!

The connection was unbroken till digitisation and the Reagan-era cuts in schools music subsidies. From the Jim Crow era we did our own thing till segregation ended and our music was openly plagiarised. After schools subsidies were cut, fewer musicians came through while COINTELPRO 2.0 ravaged our communities to destroy the vibe from within. This music remains a serious threat to those that promote fear and self-hate, because it upholds secular pride, joy and positive self-esteem in our communities. The imagery being Afro-Futurist inspired by Sun Ra and 60's Spirit Jazz encouraged Pan African connections with Khemitic/Dogon/Yoruba iconography.

All yall need to check out live in Louisville 1978 as Bootsy does some things on bass I've never heard before. Listen till the end as Uncle Bootsy shows why he's the baddest bassist ever.

Anybody else notice that Bootsy sounds a little like Jimi Hendrix when he speaks? I think that has always been his gimmick. I believe he does that in honor of Jimi, who I think he admires very much.

He kept his bandmates entertained with his Hendrix imitation. It carried over to the stage and, yes, he loved him some Jimi!

What happened to the music world today? I miss 70s R&B!
I still do listen to it on Spotify however. So many of the musicians are getting older and dying off. Sad

If there's a better bass playa, I'd be scuurd to hear him/her! I was about 14 when he came out and even old heads couldn't buhleeve what he was doing! Caucasians in music industry, actually, had the nerve to discredit Bootsy for his sound being so strange (just like they did rap music) yet couldn't STOP the Afro-funk from smellin' up Uncle Jam's America!

I saw this group in 1977, in Detroit, and was I ever impressed-and so were a whole lot of other people-I remember Rick James bitching in either 1978 or 79, about the fact that he sold four times more albums(double platinum)than Bootsy's Rubber Band(for that is what they were called back then)did-Bootsy's group went gold-which was an impressive feat back then, as anyone who remembers will tell you-and yet the people seemed to be more into Bootsy than Rick James! I'll tell you why I believe this was so. Because Bootsy's Rubber Band, as evidenced by this live video from 1976, could DELIVER THE GOODS- and Rick James could not, as far as live performances went-and if he ever did I never got to see or hear about it.
You have to understand something people-I was there-and am telling you how it was-don't get me wrong about Rick James either-I love Rick James and The Stone City Band-his/their 1st three lps are classic-but I believe when you do a live concert performance, it sticks in peoples' minds-whether your performance was very good(like here in this video)-or it sucked(like a lot of Rick James concert performances-especially when he toured with Prince[who "killed" it also], in live performance, back in early 1979). And as a result, the people thought more about Bootsy-and this was reflected apparently, in their attitude and the general consensus, coming from the people, back then; hence, Rick James being upset over the "consensus" that people raved about Bootsy, more than they did Rick James, back then.
And if you couldn't tell that Bootsy was a hell of a bass player also, something is wrong with you! It's true he was never heralded as one of the greatest bass players of that era-and all time(which he was/is), but I believe this was due to the fact that his STARDOM overrode his MUSICIANSHIP; the people were more into Bootsy the STAR than Bootsy, the BASS PLAYER, due to his band(him included)giving such impressive live shows back then; I could be wrong about so much of this, but I don't believe I am-and that's how I saw the matter then-and still do now.
    12-3-21.

Facts, I was only 5 yrs old during the battle.of the Funks. I loved all the super funky heroes. but bootsy always took it too the stage. even at that age I knew the difference. Rick sounded much better live before 1980. There was one show where rick james substituted his bassist in detroit. and it sounded amazing. I love Oscar. but he wasnt very good as a live bassist. this is what killed ricks live sound.. Bootsy only dissapointed me once in the 5 times I saw him. he walked off the stage mid show didnt return. early 1980. it was the best scenery and sound I had heard. but he walked off. like Okay Bye.lol

I always remember Bootsy being heralded as a great bass player, in 78 Rick was just coming out where Bootsy was already a big star coming out of the PFunk universe, at that point they were also way better live, Rick and the Stone City Band got better live later but overall Bootsy had better musicians but Rick was a better front man and his shows were legendary.
