I was hyped when I first heard of Dreamcast. My parents asked me what I wanted. I wanted a Dreamcast because it came with a keyboard and mouse and could browse the internet. Computers were still really expensive. But when Christmas morning game. I got a N64. Dreamcast was sold out. I was playing pissed at Santa. Until I got golden eye and star fox.
I first saw the Dreamcast shortly after the Japanese launch during a trip with my best friend to our local farmer's market. I was actually looking for import Saturn games. We saw and played Sonic Adventure and we were blown away. If Sonic had to go 3D, they nailed the presentation! A few weeks later around Christmas, my friend got his and we played Sonic, Blue Stinger, Pop n' Music, RE Code Veronica, KOF '98 & Marvel vs Capcom. I would get mine the following spring with Sonic, Soul Calibur, Marvel vs. Capcom and that amazing arcade stick that made me a believer of Japanese arcade stick and button layouts ever since! That summer after graduating HS was just amazing! My two best memories were: 1) Playing and beating Sonic Adventure & Jet Set Radio 100% with just my basic level Japanese comprehension w/o FAQs or magazine hints. I even LOVED playing as Big the Cat and fishing the whole game! 2) Playing the newest arcade fighting games at home before they even hit US arcades! Marvel 2, Guilty Gear X, Capcom vs SNK, Project Justice. I was shocked at how loud the US Dreamcasts ran in comparison. The JP ones were pretty quiet. 20 years later- still amazing! 😊
I remember as a child, one Christmas my parents got the Dreamcast and it instantly became the family system. It wasn't just a game console, at the time it was our first computer and CD player. Checking out emails when it was still young was crazy. I was also kinda into Digimon and tamagotchi but with the VMU with Chao adventure in it it was all I needed.
I recently bought a complete in a box dreamcast from Ebay and works nice with a handful of games and for some I like to get are going for a lot of money sadly like illbleed, power stone, skies of arcadia and such.
Sup @RadicalReggie - I have an original Dreamcast with the 1 on the NTSC label and it was manufactured in November 1999. I watched a bunch of your pickups with MJR and played your recommended ones. I love Gunbird 2 atm, gonna try some other shooters in a bit. You got a new sub today, keep at it with the videos. Good content +1
I bought mine when I was 19 years old.. I got mine at Toys R Us on 9/9/99. I bought Soul Calibur at launch and was blown away by the exact arcade port.. Who could forget PSO with the keyboard and Sega Bass fishing with the fishing rod controller.. lol! Also my subscription to Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine with its monthly free demo disc..
I had the n64 and when the DC came out my uncle had it. I used to watch him play pso for hours. One day I came over and it was all disconnected and wrapped up. When I asked what happened he said “well, this is yours now”. I almost crapped all over myself. He also paid for 2-3 months of sega net so I got to play alien front online pso and quake 3 arena. It was surreal at the time. It’s so hard to explain.
The Dreamcast is in the top 5 of my favorite consoles ever. I have two complete original boxed, and a mint black Sports Edition complete in box. Sonic 1&2, Grandia, Skies, and Power Stone 1&2, there’s just too many gems to list.
Dreamcast is really nostalgic for me because it’s the first system I bought when I started college and had a credit card, decent paying job to get my own games etc. Code Veronica, Cannon Spike, Quake III, Phantasy Star Online, Skies of Arcadia, Marvel 2, etc. It was a special system and happened right during a transition into adulthood where I had more freedoms, and all the excitement that you have about your future when you were young. Before the reality and routine hits you lol
Hey Reggie it’s been a bit man I gotta add you on Facebook I got my Dreamcast for Christmas I loved the hell outta my dream cast.but I’m a RPG and fighting game first everything comes after.looking great buddy hope your weekend was great!DUDE CODE VERONICA WAS THE SHIZZZZ! Was fortunate to buy the console along with NFL 2K, Soul Calibur, and Sonic Adventure at launch. So many good games, most of which I still have. An amazing system, such a trip new games are still coming out for the DC. Thanks for sharing!
I started collecting in 2017 In 2018 I got my Dreamcast as a gift from my sister. I love that little machine! This was the best era for SEGA, they went all in on games and creativity and for me that's why the Dreamcast is such a beloved system
Reggie, I bought the Dreamcast sports edition in 2000 at a Toys R’ Us. I was debating getting the PS2 or the Dreamcast and thought the Dreamcast graphics were incredible. I was sad when Sega pulled it a few years later. Thanks for your perspective. I found you via Metal Jesus and can’t believe your wealth of knowledge on the different platforms and games. 🙏
The Pal version of REZ is currently selling on eBay for between £150 - £200 (I had mine sinece launch and it's still mint) . j-ntc version of Ikaragu is £150+ ish so some of the sought after titles get up there in price.
I love the Dreamcast after playing ready 2 rumble in the shop I had to have one, so I picked one up within the 1st month of release. I never regretted it and still own the console and around 50 amazing games.
I still have my original console. I loved it back in the day. I bought it on release with money I saved up from a summer job. The Saturn and the Dreamcast are my two favorite Sega consoles. I regret not being vollecting for it sooner. Most games I want are super expensive now.
I have about 8 games for mine and have the entire collection on CD-R’s. Use to be good until HD tv’s came out. Then I did a vga cable upscaled and out thru an hdmi. It made a night and day difference. Only thing I don’t like is the controller 😔
I think the timing of the dreamcast release just didn't work. The ps1 was still doing great and most gamers were not ready for a new system. I think if Sega had released a system around the time ps2 released they would have sold more. Probably would not have beaten ps2 in sales, but alot of the folks who waited 6 months trying to find a ps2 in stock would have likely bought a Sega system just to scratch the itch.
I got my DC about a couple of months ago. Game prices have gotten a little crazy for many games but there's always other options to play the classics. ;) I couldn't afford one as a kid but I'm happy to check it out now.
Dreamcast was my favorite, was not into ps til the 3 came out. Dreamcast caught my imagination tools and sharpened them, like wow - what will be the future of gaming.
Got mine after it was discontinued from Game (might of been Electronics Boutique back then) and was on the clearance self. Shame I didn't have money back then so think just got the games that were with it. Anyway. Only lasted a week and as I wasn't collecting then and couldn't justify the expense (it wasn't that expensive but again I had no money) so I took it back and got money back! Wasn't till about 2011 that got one from guy at work who has a big Sega collection. He had a spare in box and keyboard and mouse so bought his spares.
I would've gotten a Dreamcast but at the time my parents were against me and my brothers owning videogames (though for some reason they had no issue with a game if it was on a computer so for the longest time PC gaming was how we played videogames). Doesn't really help that I never saw any adverts for it on TV and never heard of the Dreamcast until it was discontinued. Oh well, at least I got to get a used one at a convention.
I had N64 at the time and was not planning on getting a Dreamcast. I played Sonic at a Target kiosk and was comparing it to Mario 64. While I liked 2D Sonic, the 3D one didn't hook me like Mario did. I didn't have Internet in those days and so online features of DC didn't matter to me. One of the main reasons I passed on DC was because I knew next generation consoles would come out shortly after so I would need to save for those. Jump to present times, I decided to check it out. I got a used filthy unit but after a simple clean and tweek, I was able to play games. I checked out Code Veronica and thought it was pretty good. Next was ChuChu Rocket. I can see how it was great back in the day, but I didn't really get into it. The games I wanted to play were (and are) too pricey. Fortunately, my DC unit could play "backups." I checked out games like Street Fighter, Crazy Taxi, and Skies of Arcadia. Again, I see why those games were great but I have no urge to play them. Basically, I have no nostalgia for Dreamcast. Playing it today doesn't wow me or want me to go out and buy games for it.
Cool vid, the Dreamcast is the only console I ever pre-ordered and I still have my original 9.9.99 unit, plus a 2nd one I picked up for my wife (gf @ the time). I think that I have a pretty solid library, but did miss a few of the Capcom shooters and fighters. After I get my Genesis library straight I'll pick up some odds and ends for my DC.
