Yaroslavl is one of the oldest Russian cities, founded in the XI century and reached its heyday in the XVII century; in 2010, the city celebrated its millennium. Yaroslavl is the third most populous city in the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation. Yaroslavl is the oldest existing city on the Volga River. It was founded by Prince Yaroslav the Wise during his reign in Rostov (988-1010) on the cape above Strelka at or near the pagan settlement of Medvezhy Ugol. The Yaroslavl Kremlin was built on a naturally protected area on three sides (the steep high banks of the Volga and Kotorosli and the Medveditsky ravine, through which the stream flowed).
