Ha ha. Adam and I didn't talk about Stone Angel, but I gave some preliminary thoughts about it later in the video. We talked about a bunch of other books he's read, tho.
Enjoyed your chat with Adam. I loved Elena knows, don’t remember that character you had troubles with so probably not that important. I thought that the whole thing about the way Parkinson makes Elena’s life almost impossible was very well done. But 64 is not elderly. Books with spinsters I have to see if I can add one to my list.
I chuckled through your entire conversation with Adam. I guess I must have a light (or lightweight) soul as well because I am drawn to dark themes in fiction.
Very much enjoyed your conversation with Adam! I've been waffling a bit on the Fosse and Praiseworthy, as both are long and a bit daunting, but his enthusiasm for them is encouraging me to get to them already! So glad you also loved Elena Knows - Claudia Piñeiro is becoming a new favorite author of mine! I actually couldn't stand either Rita or Elena as human beings - they were both rather narcissistic and awful to each other, but still absolutely loved the book, and could sympathize in some ways with both characters, which is a feat in itself. Although Elena is very incapacitated due to her disease - she's not elderly, she's only 64! (I'm close enough myself to that age to not think of it as elderly, at least!). I'm curious about the plot point you have a quibble with, as it's been a while since I read it and I don't remember being bothered by anything in that vein...
I've heard of Adam and his channel, but I've never actually seen him - he is delightful! I enjoyed your conversation with him very much. I've been thinking of reading something by Jon Fosse and was interested in Adam's experience. Regarding your elderly friend who likes novels about families... how about something by Anne Tyler? I believe many of her novels involve family life in some way. I just read my first Anne Tyler novel (Ladder of Years) and loved it. And finally, I was going to ask what is the deal with spinsters, but now I see there is a read-a-thon happening.
I wonder if your older friend might like the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome? They are not written for adults but the books are quite charming and full-and full of family stories. (1940s Britain)
Always a joy to see Adam, although 290! 320 over here Mr. Light Weight! 😝 You know I loved Septology and Marshland is on my own TBR after Sean from Travel Through Stories mentioned it, it sounds so good.
Adam! I am Australian and I suspect Praiseworthy includes nuances specific to Australians that non Australians may not pick up, however I found it difficult and long and I don't get along with Alexis Wright's writing. I loved Claudia Knows. I'd like to read more of her writing. Glad to hear your cough has improved!
It amazes me how easily I slip back into SHOW MODE! Some people just have it, baby!
Thanks for having me as a muster guest, Shawn! This was so fun
🤪🤪
What a FABULOUS mystery guest! Can’t wait for the extended version. Very intrigued by Praiseworthy.
We might have to put Praiseworthy on our 2025 buddy read list.... :)
HE IS RISEN. Omg Adam and Shawn talking about one of my favourite novels (The Stone Angel)??? Saving this to savour later!

Forget Adam, I’ll come work the farm. 😂
😀

And I think you found some and listed them in a more recent comment. Happy reading!
This was really fun to watch. Thanks for posting it.
My pleasure!

All sweetness and light, you are!

My ever-loving gosh, what a darling and charming and charismatic guest this Adam fella is! Thank you for this tremendously enjoyable episode, Shawn!
Ha ha - my pleasure!
back after a long time, first thing is your outing, nice start to the binge, gonna do all in one sitting.
Welcome back!
Loved seeing Adam. The Jon Fosse and Alexis Wright sound great
Ha ha - great to hear from you!

Okay, now remind me what chapter that scene in Elena Knows is - I'm going to have to reread it! 🙃
I know I'll find out in a future Bookish Brunch how, or if, you get on with Fosse and Praiseworthy :)

Anne Tyler is a great recommendation, thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation!

I won't suggest we buddy read Marshland, or did I just suggest we buddy read Marshland? 😜
Well we know what you’re like with big books 😉 although that seems to be changing!
Adam! ❤
The very same!
Gentleman in moscow by Amor Towles and Still Life by Sarah Winman.
Thank you - these must be book recommendations for my elderly friend. ❤

Getting better all the time!
Elena Knows has now been adapted for tv/streaming
Interesting.
