Do I finally have the bugs worked out?

  • Time to get some wood pellets up to the little house in the back. Since the 71 is all that's in service at the moment, we take it and work out some of the little bugs.

The rail deflects with the weight of engine/cars. Maybe tamp the ballast before and after that problem joint?

Thank you for that heads up, I have not ever lived in VT, so I do not know
how the weather progresses. we have about 3 inches on the ground, but
friday it will jump to ~40F then take a noise dive with 60 mph winds!
with lake Erie still open, one heck of a lake effect will occur, not supposed
to stop till monday! it will be a pain ! have a great night!

We got six inches or so of heavy snow last weekend. Then the power went out for three days. There's a two part video coming up in a couple weeks.

@@MillBrookRailroad The loss of power stinks! so much of our lives is
tied to the power grid, at least over the past few summers they did a good
job clearing out the trees from the power lines in W NY ( did not bother to do that
for years ! ) so far it has had a positive effect with not losing power as often.
how did you charge your car? do you have a back up? Up in VT do you lose
the power often? or in the more rural areas? I hope they over hyped the storm
      that it hitting this weekend.

My car has a backup generator in it. Nothing I can use to power the house but it'll charge the 350V battery. We really don't lose power that often here. This is probably the third time in a decade. When we do lose power, however, it's off for several days.

@@MillBrookRailroad So sorry to hear that you lose power for days!
that stinks, we now only have lost power for hours ( post trimming
around the power lines ) the worst event was in ‘06 october surprise
where I live all the trees still had their leaves and we had a snow storm!
~8-in of wet snow fell, my maple trees looked like PINES !
over ~1mile 57 cross beams on the power poles were gone! wires
all over. 13 days w/o power, at first now bad, was not really cold,
and very sunny during the day. then it went grey and the temp in the house dropped.
went to the next town over and obtained a 5700 watt generator to
run needed items. did that for the last 4 days, then we got the power back
the bad part is our home is fed from the east end of the street, while the
homes west of the next cross street had power 2 day’s sooner. others
went weeks longer! can your pellet stove run w/o power?

The Mill Brook never gets old to me !! I love the simplicity and function of your railway. I myself am an N-scaler and only dream of having a 71/4 railway. So it has been nice to find your channel. I have really enjoyed your channel. I often sit here thinking of different ideas for a scenic railway. So I was curious. If you ever thought about adding some different scaled scenery to your property? I love the chicken coop scenery. So I was thinking about a scaled grain mill. You could also have a building for making your wood pellets. Your property has so much potential ! FREE PALLETS could be a great source for building projects. 2023 is right around the corner, so it will be great to see the future of your railway. Merry Christmas !!! Thanks for sharing

I was once an N-scaler dreaming of 7-1/4" gauge but I stopped investing in my N-scale layout one day and started building 7-1/4.
I'd thought about miniature buildings at first but at some point I decided that the way I use it, it really isn't a scale model, anymore. It's more like an extremely narrow gauge railroad that just happens to be close in proportion to 1/8 scale. I stopped doing things because full size railroads do them and started looking at the reasons why certain things are done and others aren't. I started looking into the engineering behind the track itself and how the equipment interacts with it, what compromises can be made and how. What I ended up with looks a lot like a small industrial or logging railroad. There are a lot of compromises made that drive railroad track maintainers absolutely crazy, but at the end of the day, nobody gets hurt badly and there's no major property damage.
Making wood pellets is a thought that intrigues me. I may build a machine one day that makes wood pellets and actually get some use out of my timber harvest.
I've used free pallets a lot around here. The chicken coops and the sugar house are all made from old pallets.
2023 looks like it might be the year I catch up on some of my projects. Finishing Woodchuck Run Siding and connecting the tracks in the basement with the mainline are on that list, as is building roadbed to extend the railroad into the sugarbush.
Merry Christmas! Thanks for watching and thank you for your comment.

You should take a piece of 3/16 angle iron and put it under the bottom of each pilot to protect them during derailments for the amount of time you dish rag your engines.

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great suggestion, but I've already got it covered (with shellac). I put a couple coats of sealer on it before bringing it out to the engine house. It's not as good as some heavy layers of paint but it'll work until I get some color on it.

    what i saw: 2:52 - 3:27.
the rail itself is dropping down, indicating a need for added ballast under the ties near that joint.
also, the joint bar itself is loose, that may be to allow for expansion and contraction of the rail in hot and cold, but it might be loose enough the rail is moving side to side as well. i also see one bolt missing from the right hand side of the joint bar.
if it were me, i'd take the joint bar off. i'd probably replace the ties on both sides of the joint.
add ballast etc. check for damage to the rail ends, new joint bar and make sure at least 1 end of the bar is as tight as it can get.
in fact, i might even put a joint bar on both sides of the rail. as long as that clears the flange etc.
either way, get the bolts as tight as i dared and still allow the rail to expand.
i might even put a double wide tie directly under that joint and screw the ends of both rails down.
i hope that helps, wish i was there to assist.
keep on keepin' on my friend.

How does one create a railroad like this

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question!
First, find a place to put it, then check with zoning. Then survey and grade the roadbed. Lay 4 inches of ballast down, then lay your track, one tie and screw at a time.
That's the short answer of the way Ido it. The long answer takes several videos. It's a lot of work but a lot of fun.
Here's a video that gives you a glimpse into how it's done on my friend's railroad.

A slogan say "we can handle it" , but never say what . MILB RR can improve it
    "We can handle derailment" and
    "We derail but deliver"
Both are absolutely True. Nothing stop you in delivering pellet train load !
We all know that you have a hidden button for hy rail 71 to ride as well on rail than off rail.
