I made two but only used one in my sewing room soooo, I have the second one on my bed between the mattress and box spring. I keep a small flashlight, cough drops, and heartburn pills in the pockets. Love it. Now my hubby wants one on his side of the bed.
I made this mat right away two years ago and added a pincushion with ribbon and a button so I can take it off. I roll it up for carrying to sew with friends, and it's wonderful for all my stuff!! Now I am teaching my 10 yr old grand daughter to sew, and we are making one for her lovely new machine. Thanks again for my gift Jenny! X
Jenny, I have to say, you still have the best, easiest and cutest tutorials on the web. I searched ALL the videos for a sewing machine mat and yours was the best...and the one I chose to make. It has all the same attributes as all the others (old and new) but is the simplest to make. Why everyone else has to add so many extra steps and complicate things, I will never know. Thanks so much!
I totally agree with you! I am in the process of making one right now. I have put it off as I didn't want something complicated but this is soooo easy!
Whwn I made my pad, I used clear plastic, folded the top down my 6 inches to form the pocket and still be able to see what;s inside, when I folded the vinyl in half, I stitched a clear tubing across the top to stabilize the top. I used oxygen tubing. I stitctched below the tubing. Just for fun, I sandwiched a few M&Ms inside the fold "just for emergency" and a decoration! Then divided into pockets at each end, using a double seam about 1/4 inch apart for security, one was wider to hold a pen. I left a large pocket in front to catch threads, etc or to store items that needed to be laying down. On another pad Imade, I sewed 2 loops one on each end. I put a dowel through the loops. I wind my binding material around a toilet paper roll, slip it over the dowel and my folded binding unrolls as I sew it on and doesn't get out of control for me!

I also made matching pillow cases using your tutorial and embroidered their names on the cuff with my sewing machine. Hmmm on the side of a wheel chair, oh both sides.. with strong hook and loop so the pockets could be remove-able but the arms of the wheelchair still have the quilted cover-- that idea needs to be fine tuned. Ah, but that is how it goes: creativity shows up and hopefully you write it down to be able get back to the good ideas that pop up, when your mind is busy doing other things, in the moment. Am going to make one for my stepdaughter for her journalling and business creations. She doesn't sew, but pretty sure this will come in handy for her organizing tablet - with pockets for her pens and different colored markers, etc. TY

Thank you for this wonderful idea. I created a large crazy quilt rectangle with my left over fabrics then trimmed it to the size to fit under my sewing machine and long enough to have pockets. I put a small pocket on each side and a large one in the middle, so I have a place for my small scissors and seam ripper on one side and a larger pair of scissors on the other side and then there is room for other stuff in the middle. Then I bound it in a coordinating fabric. I just love the convenience!
Jenny thanks so much for helping us to learn and share with us that imperfect can work, because we are not always perfect. That has worked for me as I have followed you to learn how to make bags. I am wanting to make a bag for a special friend but with the missouri star on either side and pockets on inside . The stars I have learned to add a picture to the center square of a special picture of us on one star and of a special sewing class in center of block on the other side. I am excited to think it possible but need you to help us learn how, might be good for tourists to make one of these or friend who wants to keep those special times close. I sure hope I explained myself so we can do this. Thanks so much for all you do to help us learn.

just made the machine pad. fun project. I made a 6 inch pocket but from that pocket over I sewed up 1 inch from the bottom of the pocket for the short supplies, Thanks for all the great quilt patterns. I start my day and end my day with Jenny . Happy New Year to all of you. HUGS
I have one of these that was made for me as a gift. It really helps with the vibration you experience when sewing on those plastic folding tables you find at retreats. Mine does have a pin cushion added with velcro on the side of the mat. My pockets on the right are narrow; seam ripper width; pencil width and small snips width, so they don't fall down and get lost. The big pocket is great for a candy bar or snack! My mat does not SLIDE. The machine I use it with is a Brother 6000i, and it is a light machine. I do lay a piece of "rubber shelf liner" under it to increase the absorption of the vibration.
This is a really useful quick and easy sewing machine pad that even a beginner can create. I look forward to making one for my daughter in law who loves to sew kids clothes. Thank you Jenny as always.

Thank you for a great idea. When I go to my quilt class we are a little short on room. This will help keep my tools handy and less chance of misplacing. Now that Christmas rush is over, it will be fun to make something for myself.
I work the same way as you do. Shooting from the hip has always managed to work for me. I have been using the steam a seam for awhile now and I love how much better and easier my bindings look

I come from a large family. And some of the quilts I made were for family members fighting cancer, two in particular were already handed down a generation because I have had two brothers who were young pass away. 5 out of my 8 siblings have had cancer. i am really a newbee at quilting, been sewing for years, and just loved this project to get my feet (presser feet??) wet, it is fun and easy to make and oh so useful Loved the suggestions for customizing it for all my do-dads. Used your suggestion of material with sewing theme; it looks great at my machine, everyone comments on what a great idea and i quickly jump in, "got it from Missouri Star Quilt Co - you gotta go to their site! the video tutorials are so well designed and they have some truly fabulous ideas". ps i just love your intro music - its so upbeat as soon as it plays i just want to sew sew sew.....
I love it. I think I'll make one for the arm of my chair to hold my stuff while I applique or just to hold all 3 remotes that I have to use for the TV. Love the idea of putting a pin cushion on it and I always need a place for my extra glasses, spools of thread, needle threader etc.

This is my current favorite; but I confess that just about every new tutorial becomes my favorite! I made this with some great fabric I received as a Christmas present, then had enough to recover my iron board, and even make two matching pin cushions! This pad is so, so easy, and so handy! What a great idea, and thanks so much for figuring this out for us!

Hi Jenny, I have wanted a sewing machine pad for years but just used an old towel instead, this morning as a very novice quilter I made your sewing machine (first time sewing binding as it always scared me) pad and with the offcuts rattled up a wee needlecase from Whitney Sews to keep inside. My plan is to have things stored in the pad pocket to roll and store with my machine. Keep well from Bonnie Scotland
Great Tutorial as usual! I added solid rubbery drawer liner to the back so the machine doesn't skid on the table and a plastic snap to keep it folded for transport.

This is a Great idea. I love the scissors and the pincushion ideas also. I quilt on my dining room table. And I have a drawer liner under it. But this would be such a better idea. You guys give such great ideas and advice.
I always use Steam-A-Seam when I machine bind. Once I have the binding stuck down (front side sewn first just like you did in the video), I use a blind hem foot to stitch-in-the-ditch from the front using the flange to guide the way in the ditch. Since the binding was stuck down over the seam line on the back, the top stitching ALWAYS catches the binding on the back. It's a quick and easy way to successfully machine bind. Love this video and now going to make myself one this weekend! Happy New Year!

I love these fabrics and have looked online in the U.K. To see if I could purchase some to make the work pocket but we don't seem to have any outlets over here and it costs too much to be mailed from the U.S. I love all your tutorials Jenny you make everything look so easy and encourage me to try different things.

I like that idea about the elastic to hold smaller items. I have plenty of that left over from the COVID-19 mask project.

I have one of these that was made for me as a gift. It really helps with the vibration you experience when sewing on those plastic folding tables you find at retreats. Mine does have a pin cushion added with velcro on the side of the mat. My pockets on the right are narrow; seam ripper width; pencil width and small snips width, so they don't fall down and get lost. The big pocket is great for a candy bar or snack! My mat does not SLIDE. The machine I use it with is a Brother 6000i, and it is a light machine. I do lay a piece of "rubber shelf liner" under it to increase the absorption of the vibration.

I work the same way as you do. Shooting from the hip has always managed to work for me. I have been using the steam a seam for awhile now and I love how much better and easier my bindings look

This is one of my favorite tutorials because it is something I can do in under an hour, its easy to do with scraps if needed It's something special for me as quilter and it gave me a whole knew outlook on using steam a seam!

i am really a newbee at quilting, been sewing for years, and just loved this project to get my feet (presser feet??) wet, it is fun and easy to make and oh so useful Loved the suggestions for customizing it for all my do-dads. Used your suggestion of material with sewing theme; it looks great at my machine, everyone comments on what a great idea and i quickly jump in, "got it from Missouri Star Quilt Co - you gotta go to their site! the video tutorials are so well designed and they have some truly fabulous ideas". ps i just love your intro music - its so upbeat as soon as it plays i just want to sew sew sew.....
I love it. I think I'll make one for the arm of my chair to hold my stuff while I applique or just to hold all 3 remotes that I have to use for the TV. Love the idea of putting a pin cushion on it and I always need a place for my extra glasses, spools of thread, needle threader etc.

This is my current favorite; but I confess that just about every new tutorial becomes my favorite! I made this with some great fabric I received as a Christmas present, then had enough to recover my iron board, and even make two matching pin cushions! This pad is so, so easy, and so handy! Made one today after watching your tutorial last night. Love it and it was a very satisfying useful project to complete. Thank you for always giving your viewers/fans such easy to follow instructions and videos. I used all leftover materials and added a small pincushion with velcro.

Hi Jenny, I have wanted a sewing machine pad for years but just used an old towel instead, this morning as a very novice quilter I made your sewing machine (first time sewing binding as it always scared me) pad and with the offcuts rattled up a wee needlecase from Whitney Sews to keep inside. My plan is to have things stored in the pad pocket to roll and store with my machine. Keep well from Bonnie Scotland

I added solid rubbery drawer liner to the back so the machine doesn't skid on the table and a plastic snap to keep it folded for transport.

This is a Great idea. I love the scissors and the pincushion ideas also. I quilt on my dining room table. And I have a drawer liner under it. But this would be such a better idea. You guys give such great ideas and advice.
I always use Steam-A-Seam when I machine bind. Once I have the binding stuck down (front side sewn first just like you did in the video), I use a blind hem foot to stitch-in-the-ditch from the front using the flange to guide the way in the ditch. Since the binding was stuck down over the seam line on the back, the top stitching ALWAYS catches the binding on the back. It's a quick and easy way to successfully machine bind. Love this video and now going to make myself one this weekend! Happy New Year!

I love these fabrics and have looked online in the U.K. To see if I could purchase some to make the work pocket but we don't seem to have any outlets over here and it costs too much to be mailed from the U.S. I love all your tutorials Jenny you make everything look so easy and encourage me to try different things.
