  • In this vlog, we take you to Crete's south coast to explore Frangokastelo and Chora Sfakion. We also eat traditional Cretan food in the mountains near Imbros Gorge. Frangokastello has a beautiful castle and a beautiful sandy beach. The area has an untouched feel and might be one of the few places that have not seen significant Crete development. Unfortunately, the castle was under renovation when we visited, but it is a must-visit site when it's open. The Frangokastello beach is also beautiful, but the day we went, the region was seeing powerful winds, so it wasn't an enjoyable experience with the blowing sand. We encourage visitors to look at the daily wind speed before heading to the beach.
On our way back to Chora Sfakion, we stop at a local organic roadside shop that produces handmade soap, spices, and essential oils. We then enjoy lunch at a local taverna in the mountains with the most beautiful sea views below. The traditional Cretan food we try is Dakos, spinach pie, and chicken souvlaki.
Finally, we give you a tour of Chora Sfakion. Hóra Sfakíon or Sfakia os a town is the capital of the remote and mountainous region of Sfakiá, and is a small town of just 265 inhabitants. It lies on the south coast near the Imbros Gorge's end, 74 km south of Chania. It is a popular stopping point for people wanting to hike Samaria Gorge and visit the small village of Loutro and Gavdos island by ferry. Ferries leave throughout the day at set times from the town's harbor.
Most people only spend a night, but we suggest you stay a little longer to relax and mix with the locals. The seaside tavernas serve up delicious fresh fish and at a fair price. One of the most popular places to stop is Café Despina. The café is famous for its home-made desserts. In our opinion, she serves up the best Sfakian pie we have had. It is a mix between a pancake and crepe and is usually stuffed with soft mizithra cheese. The pie is pan-fried, and the exterior is slightly crisp while soft on the inside. To finish, you drizzle local honey to create the most fantastic tasting dish. We love how this Greek dessert is made using the most simple, local ingredients yet, the flavor is so complex! Lastly, we also recommend visiting MAPKOZ & NIKH, a small bakery. There serve up fresh orange juice, coffee, and Greek pastries all day long.
